lol guys it playing in the playoffs or not doesn't even matter. we had cyprus and gibraltar and took the maximum of what we could which was only 22 points. the other teams played against tougher opposition hence they got more points and they're ahead of us...simple as that.

The ranking format applies to everyone but it is very flawed and does not take into account recent form. It is ridiculous that Greece is ranked 47th; they should easily be 20 spots up.

agreed. a bit ridiculous that austria already being disqualified from the 9th matchday moved up 18 spots and Czech Republic as well. Winning a match at our play offs since all 4 of these teams are top 20 could set us up well. Also I expect Greece to go very high in the Rankings in 2019 if they continue doing the bare minimum like they did now, as the 2014 and 2015 results will stop counting and we had no wins at all in those 2 years.

If you look at the teams ahead of Greece they have no business being rated higher then us but I guess two losses to the FI and Luxembourg will do that to us..

We remained unchanged? Scotland and Austria had huge jumps even the Chzek Republic who beat Kasakstan jumped significantly. Don’t get it.

wow. i said it doesnt apply for qualifications or eliminations but for games and only that!!! austria for example beat serbia and moldova while scotland beat slovakia and drew slovenia. that means MUCH more points that beating cyprus and gibraltar.

We better hope we can hold a top 50 spot after these results because we are in threat of dropping to Pot 4 in the EURO2020 qualifying which could see us drawing 3 formidable opponents with higher rankings than us. Draw is on January 24th.

our low ranking is a piece of why it's been harder to qualify. post euro 2004 we were often pot 1.

success builds upon success. it's harder t dig out of a hole so this campaign has been good from a digging out of a hole point of view...

we're locked to be pot 3....

Barring a catastrophe like the last euro qualifying campaign, we should at the very least reach the playoffs as one of the best 3rd placed teams. Hopefully we don't draw 2 out and out powerhouse from the top 2 pots.

worst case qualify through nations league.

I don't think there will be a playoff - there are ten groups, with 20 teams qualifying from those groups. The remaining four teams in the tournament will come out of the nations league. So we'll have to top one of the two better seeds to make it through. In a diluted field like Euro qualifying, that should be doable even if we don't show improvement (knock on wood).

You're right

  • None of the 13 UEFA EURO 2020 host countries qualify automatically
  • 24 teams to reach finals through European Qualifiers (draw: 2 December 2018, Dublin)
  • Qualifying group stage: ten groups, top two from each qualify (20 places)
  • Play-offs: 16 teams in four paths of four from UEFA Nations League, one qualifier from each path (4 places)

I think teams like ours will be pretty fine in Nations League.

20 teams ahead of us I don't think we ll find anyone better than us in the Nations League to be honest.

We really need a decent draw because Netherlands , Sweden , Italy , Croatia etc will all possibly be pot 2 teams. We were honestly lucky this time with Bosnia Herzegovina.

On the other hand teams like Romania , Serbia , Ireland could be pot 2 as well.

in fact the best team in league c is serbia and we can't draw them since we are in the same pot. i would be fine with;

romania/hungary

greece

israel

cyprus/lithuania

We want to avoid sleepers like Bulgaria and Montenegro in Pot 3. We are lucky that we will avoid Serbia and even Albania. Besides the fact have been a competitive side lately, the rivalry atmosphere surrounding the matches will deflate any advantage we may have coming in.

The Nations League will provide us a decent draw - below is the current seeding. In my opinion, the only team that we can be drawn with that  can actually play ball is Romania. Personally I think Serbia is better than them, but we have the fortune to be in their same seeding group.

Mods, Nations League needs its own thread.
