Antaeus7 Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 I thought Greece need to win by 15 in order to advance, right?
SydneyPAOK Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Actually the point difference is in games among tied teams As it stands brazil are -21, Greece -1 and Czechs +22. So Greece must win by 12 provided Brazil lose to the USA
Antaeus7 Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 That seems possible, Greece have to really bring the heat.
Greekoz Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 Im watching the ert coverage. Theyre all saying a 12 point win is required. Who would have thought we would hold the US to 69 and still lose easily.
Blackhawk Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 We stand no chance against the Czechs if we perform like we did in the previous games.
Brklyngrk Posted September 8, 2019 Posted September 8, 2019 Greece were outplayed bc of scheme. The US used 2, even 3 guys to guard Giannis and we couldn't adjust. We started out great, but it just fizzled - can't keep that up for the entire game. Also, it seems that Giannis is given a breather every two minutes.

Any team will keep putting 3 or more defenders on Yiannis as long we we are shooting 20% or less The key for Greece (and the Bucks) is dropping in shots from outside the paint which will force the defense to open up and then Yiannis will be unleashed. In the 1st Qtr against USA Greece were shooting well, and we kept the score close, and Yiannis played well and when he did most of his damage in that game. Then in the 2nd quarter nothing seemed to sink and before you know it, Yiannis (our only threat at that point) is just taken out of the game. The Bucks had this exact problem in the playoffs
Greekoz Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 This team is a disgrace, basically lost it from the foul line. 1
SydneyPAOK Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 (edited) Yep unbelievable free throws actually cost us from getting through Edited September 9, 2019 by SydneyPAOK
Greekoz Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 7 point win not enough...they hit 18 of 19 free throws and we were a pathetic 10 of 19 I think. The 2 charges called on Giannis were a disgrace but overall we didn’t deserve to advance.
SydneyPAOK Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 Agree Giannis was hard done by the refs. We weren't rebounding well either and for some reason our players (especially the point guards) dont look at the frieken shot clock.
Greekoz Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 Yeh we don’t box out it’s infuriating, we gave them so many second chance points. I can’t believe a nothing basketball country like the Czecks is advancing and we aren’t.
Blackhawk Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 I would not call it a nothing basketball country. They have 12 medals (1 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze) medals in Euro basket competitions and more Olympic appearances than Greece. Still that does not excuse our failure at this competition. The difference is the Czechs played as a team and we didn't relying on the talents of one player.
HellasLEAF Posted September 9, 2019 Posted September 9, 2019 Even with the let down against Brazil, it was still so close in the end to advancing. Down to free throws. It's disappointing. Hopefully they learned what works and what doesn't for Olympics in 2 years time. Assuming the full team will be back.. Just wasn't our tournament.

We need to go through a tournament to qualify for the Olympics.
tkarachr606 Posted September 10, 2019 Posted September 10, 2019 It wasn't our tournament but at same time I have doubts that there will ever be a tourney where Greece would have been set up for an easier path to Gold.... especially with Serbia losing today. This one hurts.
Antaeus7 Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 (edited) United States out of the tournament, 89-79 loss to France in the quarterfinals. Edited September 11, 2019 by Molon Lave

Soprano76 Posted February 28, 2022 Posted February 28, 2022 Another day, another win against Turkey in WC qualifying, this time in Turkey 1
Brklyngrk Posted March 1, 2022 Posted March 1, 2022 These games are so tough. The teams play with players who in all likelihood, would not represent them at the event. So you have countries like Serbia, Greece, Spain playing without major stars. 1
Soprano76 Posted March 2, 2022 Posted March 2, 2022 The only guy missing from the Greek team is Giannis
Brklyngrk Posted March 3, 2022 Posted March 3, 2022 Thanassis, Calathes, Spanoulis (not sure if he still plays for the national team). 1
paokarag4 Posted March 3, 2022 Posted March 3, 2022 Spanoulis has retired from playing all together, I believe he recently coached a youth team of some sort. 1
