An interesting article and one that seems to capture the gravity of the moment. I do agree with the author that says: "The answer to the question: “who on earth is dumb enough to believe in the gaslighting of America, at the point of literal mass death?” is, sadly, too many in a position of mainstream intellectual and cultural power in America."

The US is on the verge of succumbing to Trump's authoritarianism, yet the majority of the citizens fails to understand and take this seriously. I also agree with the author's statement that the US fails to understand this because they have not experienced anything similar to this in the past.

Medium:  The Trumps are Gaslighting a Collapsing America
Ever Wondered How Authoritarianism Happens? Exactly Like This.

Actually, I disagree with the term "gaslighting"

The original meaning came from the 1944 movie, which showed a ..gradual approach in trying to turn someone crazy. I don't think this applies to Trump and his cohorts. Alternative facts/reality. No shame. No pretending. No hiding it. He turns off the lights and says darkness is good for your eyes.

We saw how this pathological liar operates. Even after his lies are exposed he acts as if nothing happened and keeps repeating those lies. He's a bullshit artist too, making stuff up, fantastical conspiracies, idiotic arguments, without any constraints to reality or shame when he's shown that he's lying.

Yes, we never had anyone like him at such a high political position. That's why, we cannot normalize his behavior. It's way beyond arguing about policies.

Trump Reportedly Called Fallen American Soldiers 'Losers' and 'Suckers'

aptrump1.jpg

Trump allegedly made the comments during a 2018 trip to Paris, just hours before he decided to skip his planned visit to the Aisne-Marne American Cemetery in northern France. The memorial site marks the final resting place of about 2,000 American soldiers who were killed in the 1918 Battle of Belleau Wood.

"Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers," Trump reportedly said on the morning his scheduled visit. He also allegedly referred to the fallen troops as "suckers" for getting killed in battle.

Trump has been playing his base like a fiddle. He's a con man. Totally dishonest, and very dangerous. He's a tax cheat and a terrible businessman. No wonder why he has been fighting to keep his tax records secret! But, this is nothing new. Many of us knew he was a big con man before he even ran for president. Come to think of it, every ugly thing we knew or suspected about this vile man, has been confirmed by multiple sources & times.

This also destroys the myth that the US has the highest corporate tax rates the conservatives like to say. Trump has been financing a lavish lifestyle with graft, tax evasion, dishonest business deals, and with foreign help (which makes him an extortion pawn by his foreign lenders). The whole Trump organization and his family is like the mafia.

For many of us, it's been 4 years of mental abuse. It's one thing to disagree about policies and another to find the most indecent and unqualified person in the top elected office of the land. And, because the prez has the loudest megaphone, you can't escape his assaults.

It's disheartening that so many Americans are divorced from reality.  Have you tried to talk to members of the Trump cult? It's impossible, because they believe in "alternative facts".  You have the Dpt of Homeland Security, judges, Republican elected officials, R governors, R state legislatures, etc, all showing that Trump is a loser and a petulant child that refuses to acknowledge reality, while dragging this country through the mud. This is incredible, 77% of Repubs) believe this election was fraudulent. Hooray for the greatest democracy in history...

“Free, fair elections are the lifeblood of our democracy. Charges of unfairness are serious. But calling an election unfair does not make it so. Charges require specific allegations and then proof. We have neither here,” Judge Stephanos Bibas, a Trump appointee and former law school professor, wrote for the three-judge panel, after another frivolous Trump lawsuit was dismissed.

And, while Trump snapped back at a reporter pulling his rank as president, there's a good question here I'd have asked: Since we hold the president to higher standards of responsibility, how do you, Mr. president, suggest we react to a president who keeps lying about the legitimacy of this election while his frivolous lawsuits are laughed out of court?....

Jan. 6th, 2021, will be remembered as a day when the Trump rioters, thugs, and insurrectionists stormed the US Capitol during the joint session of Congress was meeting to certify the Electoral College results and seal the election. Trump and most Republican leaders have been against democracy, and have been creating this monster that the party cannot control any longer.  What happened on Wednesday is a disgrace but fitting end to a disastrous Trump administration. The "USA-USA" chanting self-described "patriots" proved, again, how unpatriotic they really are, and made the US a laughing stock, again, in the world.  Our allies expressed grave concern, while dictators and authoritarian leaders, including Turkey's Erdogan made fun of us.

As of now, there are 11 days left before this dangerous buffoon leaves office, but many are demanding he leaves now! He's unhinged, deranged, and a self-serving megalomaniac who's scared and so he's extremely dangerous.

Before the 2016 election, we had long discussions, here and everywhere, about how Trump was so unsuitable to be president. Sadly, we can't say that what unfolded after he became president was a surprise. He turned millions of Americans into cultists, which the only explanation for those who still support him; they are in a cult and no evidence or reason can reach them. But Trump and the Republican party own this disgrace.

We have a two party system and one party is anti-democracy, and not accepting the Dem party as legitimate. This has been in the making since the Clinton years, when N. Gingrich (Rep leader) broke the norms of civility and legitimacy.

PS>We have to get to the bottom of this: why it was so easy for the Trump goons to breach the seat of the US government. Billions of $$ was spend to fortify DC following the 9/11/01 attacks. This also shows you that had the mob been mostly black, brown, or non-Xtian, it would have been a massacre.

Sad, sad, sad moment in American history that has been in the making since 1999 (when Newt Gingrich served as the 50th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives). It culminated on Jan.6, 2021 at the end of Donald J. Trump's Presidential term.

Unfortunately, we don't know yet if this is the end of an era or simply the beginning of something much-much worse. The Republican Party has morphed into the greatest danger for democracy in this country. Unless there is somebody that has the balls to steer the Party in a different direction and correct its course, the only thing that could save this country is if the Party were to split. Short of that, Democracy cannot exist if the losing Party refuses to acknowledge the results of an election.

Going forward, what is to stop any smarter, more polished player, to pick up the Trump playbook and take it even further into the kind of chaos we have seen already.

Nothing at this stage. We are all lucky (at least in the US) that this clown was totally incompetent.

There is talk about implementing reforms, and passing laws that would protect the country and the constitution from this kind of abuse happening again.

We'll have to wait and see. We're not in the clear yet.

Surely, a competent demagogue can succeed in the US. This book, How Democracies Die, explains the way. Actually I'd say it'd be easier in the US since the Republican party, one of the two major parties, is anti-democracy, anti-intellectualism, anti-science, pro-conspiracy theories, fosters white privilege, and religiosity. Repubs have created a monster, their base, which has been helpful in mobilizing and winning elections, but is heavily anti-democratic (the system of democracy), and simplistic in its approach to politics: us v. them; with us or with the enemy; Dems aren't fit or legitimate to govern.

There can never be unity or cooperation when there's no agreement on a set of reality, facts. A plurality of Repubs still believe this election was stolen. Now anyone who believes that is mentally challenged and/or divorced from reality. But in creating the monster, many Repub leaders have to feed it this lie.

They should throw out of Congress all those elected members who challenge the result of the election as insurrectionists against the rule of law, and their oath to the constitution.  The president, vp, all 435 House members, and 1/3 of the Senate, were elected on same ballot..... yes, same 1-piece ballot. So if they dispute the top line (for prez and vp), then they should dispute their own election too!

Demagogues, hypocrites, enemies of democracy they all are, and of the worst kind, because they have more responsibility than the average person.
