Transfer News and Rumors - January 2025

Man, what a saga with Meite.  Overall I'm pleased we got him with the caveat he can be the same player he was by the time the play offs begin and with a second caveat that we are hopefully not too far from the top.  If it doesn't work out for whatever reason, it's only a loan spell.

The Meite fiasco really has gone on far too long. I said this in the summer and I'll say it again now, considering how long it all dragged on for, if he starts poorly I think the fans and media will get on his back pretty quickly. Especially if the team isn't winning. Any goodwill he built up last season has well and truly gone.

The players arriving today and tomorrow were literally three players we were linked to all during the summer transfer window. PAE is now trying to cover their mistakes in the summer by signing these guys now, but it is 6 months too late. We are 9 points behind in the league, out of the Cup and Europe is a must to keep this season alive. Unfortunately none of three incoming can help us on Thursday or at Sociedad next week.

The way our summer transfer window was handled really did put us behind the 8-ball. Giorgos Savvidis (or whoever is in charge of signings) are trying to rectify that now, but only after Ivan stepped in and essentially said to Lucescu "Give us a list of players and we will get them for you." These are the same guys who he wanted 6 months ago, the only thing that has changed is that our form has dipped. So IMO there is no excuse for not bringing the players in then. We don't have to wait until disaster strikes to take action.

I hope we can salvage the season. Progressing in the Europa League is a must and while 9 points is a big gap it isn't insurmountable, especially with the playoffs. We would have to be perfect for the rest of the regular season, which would clearly take a big improvement in form/performances.

If we do that we probably head into the playoffs around 3-5 points behind. Whether we can then win out in the playoffs is extremely tough, but it would keep us in touch going late into the season. We have left ourselves no room for error but there is a way back, albeit a difficult one.

Mateusz Wieteska signing is official. On loan from Cagliary until June 2025. Buyout option is set at 1.5 mil.

In other transfer news, Karol Swiderski is about to sign with Panathinaikos who will pay 2 mil to Charlotte. I believe we have some percentage in the resale price for the player.

Pelkas is signed and he chose jersey number 80, since his old number 10 is in the hands of Murg. 👎

Official announcement will be tomorrow. Meite as well.

Can't say that I noticed him. I think he played most of the games for U19 team as opposed to 'B' team. The other promising youngster from the U19/'B' team is Bataulas. I will try and keep on eye on those two.

In other transfer news, I don't quite understand why we are after the 34-year old Bakabou?

-edit- saw a random instagram account claiming that Brandon Thomas has a lucrative offer from MLS. No detail on where that might be, though.

Two rumors according to this new site i found

Tzimas --> Fiorentina : "Fiorentina has expressed strong interest in acquiring Stefanos Tzimas, a 19-year-old striker, from Nürnberg. The club has reportedly been monitoring Tzimas for several years and is now actively working to facilitate his transfer to Florence as soon as possible. Initially, Nürnberg had acquired Tzimas from PAOK Salonika on a loan deal that included an option to buy for 18 million euros, along with a 15% share of any future resale. However, Fiorentina is prepared to purchase Tzimas directly instead of Nürnberg, offering them a compensation fee in the range of 4-5 million euros. The overall proposal from Fiorentina for Tzimas amounts to 22-23 million euros, with PAOK maintaining a 15% share of any future resale. Furthermore, it has been reported that an agreement has already been reached with Tzimas for a contract that will be valid for the next five and a half years."

Bakambu "Cédric Bakambu was a target for PAOK, who had reached the point of negotiating the possibility of acquiring the 33-year-old striker from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a free agent. PAOK offered him a contract with a duration of 1.5 years and earnings amounting to 2 million euros. However, Bakambu decided to stay at Real Betis until the end of the season, unless an irresistible offer emerges. His decision was influenced by his recent performance, scoring a winning goal against Mallorca."

Meite also is a flawed player who may be good enough for the SL, but isn't at European level. We had this whole convo last year! Pretending that Camara will paper over his deficiencies is not a winning formula, IMO. If Lucescu is with us next season, expect the same song and dance to begin this summer, too.

Also, none of these rumored new players will help us get younger. Utterly insane that we're going to try to pay out the ass for a striker who's already 33, and will give him an 18 month deal on top (assuming he accepts it).
