PAOK in Europe 2024-2025 (News, Draws, Rankings)

Recommended Posts

Our market value is 100 mil. Theres is 4 mil. That means on the market we have more talent. On paper. However as I’ve stated I don’t think we will blow them away over two legs. You can’t measure heart and grit. Lucescu stubborn ways may hurt us. If Vierinha gets any minutes, they’re gonna expose him.

EL League Stage should be safe after today's 4-0.

Draw is August 30th. 8 matches starting September 25/26 and the 8th match will be played January 30th 2025. We will 99,99% be in pot 2.

To determine the eight different opponents, the teams will initially be ranked in four seeding pots. Each team will then be drawn to play two opponents from each of these pots, playing one match against a team from each pot at home, and one away.

I don't know if there is a rule about only drawing one or more clubs of another FA. E.g. the Dutch will have 3 participants. Drawing one of them is not my cup of tea let alone 2 or 3.

Checked it. It is a max of 2 teams of the same association.

As we tend to play same teams over and over again we will draw most likely 75% of AZ and 020 (NL), Tottenham (ENG), Eintracht (D), Midtjylland (DK), Fenerbahçe (TR), APOEL (CYP), Maccabi Tel Aviv (ISR), Qarabag (AZB), Olympique Lyonnais (F) and Malmö FF (S).

Would love another crack at Malmo. Imagine playing them in mid-October or something. Big difference there.

I think Midtjylland would be a good one to get simply because they come from a league we need to overtake.

So we draw 2 opponents from each pot, including our pot 2. 1 away, 1 at home. Only restrictions: you can not draw a club from your country  (for us: no gavro), and a max of two opponents from a country (only the Dutch have 3 so this only applies to them). There are no "political" restrictions.

Pot 1:

AS Roma, Manchester United, FC Porto, 020, Glasgow Rangers, Eintracht Frankfurt, Lazio, Tottenham Hotspur, Slavia Praha

Pot 2:

Real Sociedad, AZ, Sporting Braga, Olympiakos, Olympique Lyon, PAOK, Fenerbahçe, Maccabi Tel-Aviv, Ferencváros

Pot 3:

Qarabag FK, Galatasaray, Viktoria Plzen, Bodø/Glimt, Union Saint-Gilloise, Dynamo Kyiv, Ludogorets Razgrad, FC Midtjylland, Malmö FF

Pot 4:

Athletic Bilbao, Hoffenheim, Nice, Anderlecht, FC Twente, Besiktas, FCSB, RFS Riga, Elfsborg

No easy teams, in there. Except for maybe 1-2 teams in pot 3-4, the rest are big names and will be tough.

Dream draw: Rangers and Slavia (Pot 1), Maccabi Tel Aviv and Ferencvaros (Pot 2), Malmo and Bodo/Glimt (Pot 3), Riga and Elfsborg (Pot 4).

Even that isn't easy, just probably the most winnable game on paper at least. UEFA got their wish to increase the level of the Europa League by creating the Conference League and that is certainly the case.

In the League Phase, 1st-8th will qualify directly for the round of 16. While 9th-24th will battle it out in play-offs to join the top 8 in the round of 16. 25th-36th will be knocked out as there is no dropping down to the Conference League with this new format.

Glad we have no Dutch opponents.

Doable as we have the thoughest from pot 1 and 2 (Utd and La Real) away and the teams of about the same level (Slavia Praha and Ferencvaros) at Toumba. Ferencvaros btw only achieved this LS after eliminating Borac Banja Luka after penalties.

Order of matches TBA.

I see 10 points minimum. I saw some account do computer simulations (about 1000) and from playing football manager, usually 8 points gets you through to the next round. 11+ should be enough for a bye to the round of 16

Are you aware of the new League Stage format and the 8 MD's? Past average calculations do no longer apply today.

Yes. I am talking about the new calculations....

Some swiss data group did 1,000 simulations and came up with these numbers based off some formula.

I will try and go to Real Sociedad and Manchester Utd away. If I get a ticket for the game at Old Trafford and we win, then I will be retiring from watching football at the end of the season. It has been a dream of mine since I was a kid to witness PAOK win at Old Trafford.

Fairly good draw in my opinion. We should be able to defeat FCSB and Ferencvaros. Also playing the two Czech teams at Toumba gives us added advantage and two wins are a possibility. Winning at Riga is a must, and who is to say we won't get a tie or two in the other away games. With that in mind, I would venture to say that we will win 4 games and tie one, which will give us 15 points, which according to the simulations gives us 42% chance of making the top 8 of the group. Nine points should be enough (56% chance according to simulations) to qualify to the playoff round. A lot will also depend on the actual schedule of the games which will be announced tomorrow.

I am curious where these simulations are? Very intriguing.

I'll say that I think this group is very doable for us (not that "group" means much here). If we play to our potential, I could see two losses, one draw, five wins. If we perform to Blackhawk's more conservative guess...that's still pretty good odds for a "bye" to the next round.

Interesting. Looks like these are cumulative; so if you get five wins your chances of making it into at least 8th place is 75%. If my (probably optimistic) projection of one draw and five wins comes true, that increases to a 97% chance.

Says it's elo-based, which is probably skewing this, though. My guess is they're using UEFA coefficients as the ranking criteria. Keep in mind that all three Turkish teams have "artificially" low coefficients; it might actually be a little harder to get through than this implies. Though there may be a few teams that are overachievers ranking-wise as well (but I wouldn't bet on it).

Having dreamt of seeing PAOK at Old Trafford for over 25 years, you can imagine my delight when realising I will be in Savannah, Georgia at that time. It will take a few days for me to get over this.

In the meantime I will try to make the games in Istanbul and Spain.
