MykinesFC Posted January 9, 2016 Posted January 9, 2016 (edited) Agreed. His moments of success in Turkey the last few years could translate into the same in Greece. Is it fair to say that overall the level of quality is higher right now in the Turkish league? (I don't actually know, I'm just guessing based on the higher quality foreign players the top Turkish teams attract.) Edited January 9, 2016 by MykinesFC
georgelaz Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 It's hard to look beyond my pride to objectively say which league is better but I'll do my best. Turkey probably has a slight edge over the whole league. I think Olympiakos is the best team from both leagues, however.
Rockafeller Skank Posted January 10, 2016 Posted January 10, 2016 Rosterwise Olympiakos is far inferior to Galatasaray and Fenerbahce. But Both teams don't do any better at Europe. Can't talk about Fener because they had a ban from European Competitions since 2015-16. Galatasaray usually perfrms as Oly does , maybe goes 1 or 2 rounds further in Europa League and maybe they qualified for R16 of champions League 1 more time than us the last 5-6 years.
paokarag4 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 And on the final day of the transfer window, he rose. http://www.contra.gr/Soccer/Switzerland/SuperLeagueSwitz/sion/sth-sion-o-gkekas.3887648.html 1
Akritis_1944 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Amazing career. Not a pretty player but has been effective. Shame he couldn't score against Bosnia at home and that header versus Colombia as mentioned by Ellas75. They were glaring misses. 2
georgelaz Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 lol Gekas must have a really talented agent, some really creative moves. a mid-tabled Swiss team? 1
Nikod Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 This guy will be playing until the day he dies 3
Dava-G Posted February 6, 2016 Posted February 6, 2016 This guy will be playing until the day he dies ... And scoring

Tzatziki Posted February 24, 2016 Posted February 24, 2016 The first one was very nice, he back heeled it in. B) Too bad Sion did not advance.
paokarag4 Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 This guy just bangs them in for fun where ever he goes. Sion unlucky not to go through, I beleive they hit the woodwork in stoppage time and had they scored then they would have gone through on away goals. Unlucky.
georgelaz Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) I wouldn't mind still having him up top with Mitroglou. Novakovic is 36 and still automatic starter for Slovenia. We looked very menacing with Mitro and Gekas together vs. Costa Rica. Eventually probably phase in Velios or Klaus. also just realized he's playing with Cypriot national Christofi. He's very solid from what I've seen. Great winger, massive pace, which Greece desperately needs. Edited February 25, 2016 by georgelaz
Greekaroos Posted February 25, 2016 Posted February 25, 2016 (edited) Only Fernando Santos would make surprise selections of recalling a 35 year old Gekas if he is in goal scoring form. Santos didn't care if you were 37 or 17 if thought you were valuable to the team for that match. Kapino & Mavrias played for the national team at the age of 16 & 17 while Lymberopoulos, Gekas, Dimitrios Papadopoulos, Kapetanos & a few others have had surprise recalls late in their careers. I'm not sure that the current coaching stuff wouldn't select a 37 year old Gekas if they qualify for Russia 2018 just like Santos selected Lymberopoulos & Chalkias in their late 30's at Euro 2012. Polikastano Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Another 2 goals today in a 3-1 win. Started the game and was subbed off in second half.
Dutch Eagle Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Thought it was only one goal. Anyhow, great work from this old warrior.
PAOKSWEDEN Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 Thought it was only one goal. Anyhow, great work from this old warrior. One goal according to Sion's fb page and two goals according to transfermarkt
Greekaroos Posted February 27, 2016 Posted February 27, 2016 On FlashScore it has Gekas scoring two goals in the 7'min & 65'min in Sion's 3-1 home victory over Lucern before being substituted in the 73'min, replaced by Sierro. Sion's other goal in the 59'min was scored by Assifuah. 1

Greekaroos Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Surprise surprise! Gekas just scored in Sion's Switzerland Super League match away Young Boys. Currently Young Boys 1 Sion 2 at half time interval. 1
Greekaroos Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 As usual Theofanis Gekas has once again scored a goal for his club Sion with the opening goal of the match in the 20th minute away to Lugano in Switzerland's Super League. It is currently half time with the score Lugano 0 Sion 3.
Greekaroos Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Gekas scores his 2nd goal of the match making it 0-4 in the 48th minute & then substituted in the 63rd minute. Match finished Lugano 0 Sion 6.
Dutch Eagle Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 A true legend. If wiki is correct in the older years then this should be goal #5 for him this season. And thus #200 on clublevel. Don't know if that includes (international) cup-games. And 24 goals for the Ethniki.
