SL1-R22: Panathinaikos - PAOK (02-Feb-20, 19:30 EET)

Bring on the CL!  Sorry I was in an parallel universe.  These days even if you have one weakness a decent coach should exploit it, and Donis did that.  Vieirinha shouldn't have started on the left.  PAO is *all run* and we don't have enough to hold the ball, hence we have to run also, and we couldn't.  Also Mauricio shouldn't be starting.  We've been getting away with this in other games because of the level difference but no so in these games.

As to if Abel is the man to lead us next year, not sure.  Definitely not at this stage but he has time to make it up.  We'll see.

Yes he has time, but he needs players also. We have players over 30 years old (and some coming from serious injuries) in key positions. Panathinaikos today out ran us. They were beating us to the ball and we did not help ourselves with bad mistakes. Not sure we can last in the playoffs where we will play this kind o matches. There won't be any easy games.

I want to see the player's reaction on Wednesday. Let's see if they have any pride left in themselves.

You guys are spot on, our players need upgrading. A combination of age and serious injuries has the current squad just about done. The style Abel wants to play doesn't suit these players, he wants possession and build up. The only guys capable of that are Misic (he is a star) and Bieseswar (he's been out of form most of the season) Mauricio was never the most technical player and obviously coming off a long term injury you can't expect much from him.

Another thing that we struggle is with teams pressing us high. It's how Aris outplayed us and same today with PAO. Again our players aren't good enough to pass their way out of a press, it's just errors and turnovers. PAO pressed with intent and in number, exactly as Aris did. In comparison when we pressed it's half-assed and not every player does it, that just makes it easy for the opposition to beat the press and break into space.

There is time but I can't say I'm confident heading into the playoffs where we will play another 8 derbies. Especially the ones away. The formula is there to beat us, everyone has seen it. It's up to Ferreira to find a way to beat teams that press or alter his playing style in those matches so we don't get caught on the ball so deep in our half. Over to you Abel.

This is where Lucescu for me was a much better manager.  Lucescu gets the job done and is the definition of practical.  Abel wants to do it pretty but the problem is he doesn’t have the players to play the way he wants.

Now he finds himself in a bind.  He can brush off the defeat to Aris as an unlucky game but what happened against PAO is on him.  I’m not sure if he doesn’t know what to do or if it’s against his principles but either way if he wants to win the title he’s going to need to be more tactical, adapt to the opposition, play players to their strengths and get more out of certain players, especially Pelkas, Biseswar and Akpom.  He also needs to get that midfield sorted.

You are right. The Aris game should have been a wake up call for Ferreira. Unfortunately he did not make any corrective measures. He got lucky to win the games against AEK, Lamia and Volos playing the same game. Panathinaikos came and applied the same strategy as Aris and basically beat us the same way. In both games the opponent did not really score with any creative plays. They just pressed forcing our player to make serious mistakes. It is these mistakes that we need to eliminate.
