Lionel Messi was taken off in the second half of Argentina's 1-0 friendly win over Honduras on Friday (goal Higuain) with a bruised lower back.

The Barcelona star collapsed on the ground after a knee to his torso and was seen holding his back as he gingerly walked off the field in the 64th minute.

Television cameras then showed trainers rubbing the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's lower back on the sidelines before taking him into the tunnel.

Banega came on as Messi's replacement.

Tests performed after the match revealed the 28-year-old has a deep bruise in his lumbar region.

It was reported earlier on Friday that Messi is scheduled to fly to Spain on Saturday to appear before a judge at the Audiencia de Barcelona on June 2.

He is then expected to fly directly to Santa Clara, California, to rejoin the team for Copa America preparations.

USA (first place in the group) and Colombia advance to the quarterfinals.

Di Maria (Argentina) is out for the rest of the tournament after yet again an injury at a big tournament.

Ecuador was toothless until the last 20 or so minutes, when they really put on the pressure. At that point, though, they were already two down, and the writing was on the wall. US is going to have a hard time against Argentina (assuming Venezuela doesn't pull off a miracle).

Colombia advanced to the semi's after a penalty shoot-out (4-2) against Peru.

According to the rules there was no extra time after the regular 90 minutes, where no goals were scored.

you are lucky aek66 that you are not Australian...

highlighting shortcomings in the domestic game would have you branded a danger equal to ISIS....

Having said that ...the MLS and The American footballer is light years ahead of the average Aussie and the A League...

I need to be careful saying that...any negativity (realistic comments) about pleasantville is frowned upon..

it's amazing how the usa found 'ok' german-american footballers in germany and almost through alchemy, turned fools' gold into gold for intl. level football.

Klinsmann chose them for a reason. He surely also realizes, however, that average-level Europe-based players aren't going to carry the team to that next level. To me, it looks pretty obvious that he made a common sense choice to take advantage of Europe's better youth development to hold the US over until MLS starts producing actual players (who then - hopefully - find their way into the better leagues around the world).

I'll also repeat my favorite line about how the US plays in comparison to Greece - the USMNT plays without fear, because they don't really realize how outmatched they are. Greece plays *only* with fear. As long as the US's players have that mentality, they will punch above their weight class.

Long story short - this should be a fun match tonight, at least for a while.

Think it's time for the US to part ways with klinsmann, what's he done that American coaches hadn't done before him? Negative coach thats taken them about as far as he can, they have some good young talent coming through like pulisic, nagbe etc but he sticks with duds like wondolowski, still can't believe that idiot didn't take Landon Donovan to the last World Cup. Playing on home soil and can't even get a single shot away.. That's on top of the Ecuador game where klinsmann takes off Dempsey (reliable goal threat) and then looks surprised that no one can hold the ball up front...Ecuador could have scored 5 goals in the last 10 mins, his substitutions and game strategy are laughable.

as the host country a deep run is not a huge surprise, but klinsmann got lucky most of the way through aside from the Costa Rica game. I don't see how the team has moved forward quality wise under klinsmann, the best soccer I've ever seen the US play was the 2002 World Cup. And 2010 wasn't bad. As far as Landon Donovan goes clearly it was personal, but a player of his experience would have been perfect to bring on late in games, he delivered in major tournaments, wondolowski is just a typical MLS finisher who will score against crap concacaf teams.

Colombia - Chile 0-2.

So this means Argentina and Chile meet again in the final just like last year and just like their openingmatch in their group.

I hope Messi and companeros win the Copa.

A player of his size needs a big trophy.
