Wembley revisited, or

Despoina gave an interview (see http://www.sportdog.gr/new/article.aspx?id=30610 ) in which she claims she was told by Pattakos that the most famous win of PAO had been bought.

Immediately Pattakos claimed that the story was false (http://www.sportdog.gr/new/article.aspx?id=30699) and his official biographer (same link) claimed that he said what Despoina claims but it was a joke (by the otherwise humorless Pattakos) and added that we should be paying more attention to her statement that in 1967 she was unfaithful to Papadopoulos and the poor man was contemplating suicide (he was such a failure that he failed at that too).

Finally, the goalkeeper at the time (Konstantinou, http://www.sportdog.gr/new/article.aspx?id=30614) deduces from what he witnessed that Despoina is lying).

There is something for everyone in this tale:

OSFP supporters can once more claim that the win was bought

PAO supporters can pin their hopes and faith on the truthfulness of Pattakos, on the disputed truthfulness of Despoina, or on the ability of Konstantinou for ratiocination.

Opponents of the junta may regret that Despoina was not sufficiently unfaithful and like a modern (and antipodal) Lysistrate save Greece from Papadopoulos. Millions of Americans were clamoring at the time "make love not war!" and she failed to be as loving as the circumstances warranted.

And this, in the end, is the beauty of soccer. While historians rarely learn anything about the game, soccer-fanatics learn a lot about history, including the dirty linen of the Papadopoulos couple and, dare I write it?, of PAO!

what a shitty topic....

yes the junta paid off slimy communist scum who they loathed (redstar) for Panathinaikos to win. right...

because Greeks playing well, having heart and a bit of luck is totally impossible, as proven in 2004. This is stupid immature crap from Olympiakos trying to make conspiracy theories and speculations "A la FYROM" about PAO simply being more succesful in europe....... get lost KKE !

a desperate topic by a fan whose team couldnt even win a game in this years CL...

& we all know of osfpp's great euro wins... too bad their losses are always remembered

My friend, when the wife of number 2 in the goverment at the time comes up and says all this it has nothing to do anymore with i am red,you are green,he is yellow. It has to do with the history of one of the bigest moments to our greek sports and is something that needs to get investigated and if it found that it is all lies punish the people who started this but if it is true...... By the way you you never said your opinion about the topic, just your"love" for Osfps record in CL.

@drakos13, bar7:

Thank you for your lucid and insightful comments. But, since I am hardly able to profit from them, may I humbly suggest that it might be best that you stay away from the shitty and desperate topics I produce and converse instead with your equals?

For those interested in the subject:

The relevant part of the interview can be found at youtube at

. There is also a reference in today's Eleytherotypia.

Concerning proofs and such: It is unlikely that any will ever surface. Clearly, it is nearly impossible to prove that Aslanidis did not buy the game. It is also hard - nearly impossible- to prove that he did and Despoina does not say the game was bought, she says that Pattakos told her that ..... while Pattakos denies he said it and his biographer asserts he did say it but in jest. So that, in the end, each of us, at least those of us who care one way or another, will have to assign odds to the event/bribe ever happening.

Welcome back, oh great one, Go:bekli.

Is this just a short visit, after a two year sabbatical, or, will you grace us for a while?

1) Thanks for the welcoming

2) Go:bekli is of the opinion that conversations that are neither informative nor entertaining are not worth having.

3) A corollaty of 2) above is that the next post will come if and when

- either a factual question is asked and Go:bekli is of the opinion that he can provide a meaningful answer,

- or Go:bekli has a question and thinks that the Phantis readership might be able and willing to provide a meaningful answer,

- or Go:bekli's brains become sufficiently addled that he temporarily or permanently forgets 2) above.

Aleyku:mselaam!
