  1. Great game at Aris. Down 1-0 early, due to an indisputably wrong decision by the ref. PAO would have lost this game last year (and not only last year). Final 1-1. Wow. Really impressive. Aris is a quality team. We've lost only 1 game to the leader of the league PAOK at their home turf. IF they continue like this, PAO would easily finish in the top 5 and get rid the UEFA penalty this season. Amazing. I didn't really know what to expect last summer but if you told me we'd be struggling to avoid relegation after the -6 penalty, I'd have said possibly...
  2. That's the only thing that worries me..........his unpredictable personality and his very poor judgment. On the other hand, if the team proceeds as it is now, they'll do well, but it'll take several years to be competitive for the title and perhaps in Europe. PAO has to grow and develop their own talents since they can't afford to buy ready talent. I know money doesn't determine everything in how a club performs, but in this stage and age, it matters a lot. I don't know of any team with a tiny budget that made it big in recent history. Even Leicester had a $40 mil budget in 2015, and their title that year was a fluke.
  3. The worst thing Greece can do is to keep them in squalid camps or in ghettos. This is how you bread radicalism and a perpetual crisis. Many of those refugees want to work and be normal. Greece's countryside is deserted. Sure, why not give them farms, or other opportunities to integrate. Why do you fail to see that if there's room (and most countries do have room), a few thousand new immigrants can be very beneficial to the economy. It's not a zero-sum game, nor the economic pie is fixed--this is a big misconception. New workers are also consumers; they spend money because they need food, clothing, housing, etc. As to the comment .."in a 100 years they'll take over by starting a civil war..." it's ridiculous, unless, of course, you do exactly what you want... keep them in a ghetto, impoverished, and no options but to resort to crime.
  4. Well, the day has come..... We're playing gavroi at their home. Frankly, I don't know what to expect. Probably (and hopefully) this team is learning fast.... the PAOK game was a bad one, but against AEK we were better. Oly is a good team but not as dominant as other years, and even though they got a big euro win a few days ago, they also lost to OFI prior to that. Obviously I'd be ecstatic if we won, but a tie is a great result too. Is Johansen playing today?
  5. Definitely an omen. As the holy Oracle said, the wooden walls will rise again to save Greece from the barbarians. The 58 wrecks reveal that on the fifth month, on the eight day, at 58 minutes to noon, the immortal emperor will wake from his sleep to bring fire and brimstone on all who have harmed Greece.
  6. Listen, Pepito.... You better be selling your beans to collect the money for the wall Trump is going to build (you'll pay for it). It's amazing that Trump's supporters are so brainwashed. They're still talking about "lock'er up" and that "Billary" will go to jail soon. They don't seem to wonder why a Republican Congress that investigated HRC (and spent millions of $ to do it), and couldn't do it. Or, that in the last 1.5 yrs there's a Republican Congress, a Rep Prez, a Rep Attorney Gen, FBI director, etc, etc.... Funny thing, the person being investigated is Trump and his swamp gators.
  7. My apologies, madam. I assumed that a woman participating in this forum would be more logical and better at drawing analogies than some guy with a simplistic and irrational argument.
  8. Why is Trump incapable of making a speech like this one? I'm not talking about his illiteracy and ignorance of history or being aware of the role of institutions, but that his temperament and megalomania prevent him from saying anything close to what Obama is saying. The Don, "I alone", who is being outed by his own people as a dangerous incompetent nincompoop. On the other hand, he apparently speaks the language of many Americans for which no Trump trespass matters. Just today I was talking to a couple of them (long story) and were saying how they know that "Billary" will end up in jail before the end of the year. They say this without any sense of irony.... that their beloved leader has committed so much more crimes that the alleged crimes by HRC, who has been investigated by Republicans for years. .. It shows you the power of Faux News, Info Wars, and other right wing propaganda that has convinced millions of Americans about "alternative facts."
  9. The DNC is the problem and not Trump? Seriously dude? Without wanting to defend the DNC, let's put things in perspective. The US political parties are much more democratic than most parties in western democracies, because they have ceded so much power to the voters. Let's not forget that a political party wants to keep as much control of their own affairs as possible. It used to be (and it's the case of most parties) that the party leaders decide who should be on the ticket and who can elect the next party leader. They were doing that until the 1970s (for the Dems) and 1980s (for the Repubs) when those parties opened up the selections process to the average voter. Any voter can chose a party to participate in (in some states a voter can decide on same day of election) a party's selection process. No fees, no formal application, no admittance requirements. How many parties do you know that they do this???. The super-delegates was an attempt by the Dems to keep some control.... the main objective of the party regulars & leaders is to win elections. Often the activist base is more radical (the more extreme elements of both parties participate in the primaries) and the may select candidates who are not suited for the general election. As for the Sanders-Clinton race, the super delegates did NOT play a role. Nor have they played a role in that to reverse what the base has voted during the primary season. Clinton got millions more votes than Sanders. No serious analyst believes that the bias of the DNC in favor of Clinton helped her; actually it hurt her once people found out, so Sanders got a boost of contributions, publicity, and votes. Looking back, some people today say Sanders could have beaten Trump, but back then Clinton was thought as a stronger candidate for the general election. I'm still not convinced Sanders would have fared better, because socialism is not yet as acceptable in the US. And, the majority of the Dem party was not behind him, not in the primaries, among the Dem voters who participated in the selection process, and not among the larger voter base that tends to vote Democratic in the general election. Mind you, I voted for Sanders...
  10. I used to think that, but there's a problem with this approach... Let's say I'm totally drunk but I believe I can drive.... Do you think I bear any responsibility? And, would you respect me if I spread conspiracy theories, false rumors, etc., irresponsibly for my benefit? This gets worse when I could either easily check out the validity of my arguments or I have been shown repeatedly that I'm wrong but I keep spewing my garbage.... How about respecting a true believer in fascism/racism/you name it.... .... PS> by the way, this is a person that Trump finds very respectable, awesome, and he sat for an interview as soon as he became president....
  11. Contrary to advise from US intel agencies, allies, and even Republicans, Trump called Putin to congratulate on his election win.
  12. Well, if you hire a clown expect a circus. Never in the last century we've seen such a disarray in the White House, with people being indicted, lots of resignations/firings, and scandals. All within the first year of the Trump admin. The man (toddler) is not qualified and dangerously incompetent because he doesn't even listen. I don't think he cares about anything other than his ego and his own wealth. Also, the economy was doing very well when Obama left, and let's not forget the economic disaster he inherited from Bush. That momentum continued under Trump. However, Trump has the distinction of being so unpopular with a good economy. When a prez gets under 40% approval, usually the economy is tanking.... So, where will he go when the economy begins to slow? The man is so ignorant (and won't listen to economists), that he agreed to huge tax breaks when the economy didn't need this stimulation, while piling on huge debts. No serious economist (left or right thinks the latest tax bill was good). He now talks about tariffs that would hurt US trade interests and consumers.
  13. Except Greece has lost the world on this issue. Everyone calls Skopje Macedonia. The US, EU, and NATO all want this little country into their orgs for many reasons, including stability. FYROM can break apart and hostilities will result. There is an international court decision condemning Greece (I think it was in 2010) for some violations against Skopje. I think with the new Skopje leadership willing to scale back their rhetoric, symbols, and constitution, the world is singling out Greece for not cooperating. The big powers want peace in the region not a powder keg that would ignite the Balkans again. Macedonia as a geographical area is in 3-4 countries. Macedonians of the past were Greeks/Hellenes. In my opinion, Greece should accept a name that denotes geography or something the two countries can live with. If Greece fails to negotiate it will lose imho. So, as Bananas says, the world doesn't care. The powerful countries don't care about names and that particular history. They want this dispute to go away.
  14. "Having reconstructed a lot of Stone Age women and men, I think some facial features seem to have disappeared or 'smoothed out' with time. In general, we look less masculine, both men and women, today.” I wonder why? Natural selection? or those masculine features weren't needed any longer. Maybe strength wasn't as necessary? In a population where most everyone hooks up and has children, it doesn't explain "more masculine women" (uglier?) being selected out of the pool. Interesting.
  15. The great world museum in NYC, the Metropolitan, has one of the best collections of art and artifacts from across the globe and throughout human history. I highly recommend visiting this museum, but budget many hours, which wouldn't be enough to see everything. I suggest you visit the Medieval section first. This was the time when European society was focusing its art on glorifying the rulers and God. The Dark Ages lasted centuries. The Renaissance re-discovered the Greek and Roman past, not by design or will, but as a result of a new emerging class, the merchants, who traded, got rich, and challenged the status quo. Anyway, the medieval section is dimly lit. Then walk to the Greco-Roman wing of the museum.... woa, the light, the brightness of human spirit, the potential of humanity, the pursuit of happiness as a worthy value, instead of absolute devotion to rulers and gods. It's been humanism, and the Enlightenment that gave us some of the best things we enjoy today, from science and its benefits, to individual choice and freedom.
  16. Imagine if Greeks were brought in as slaves, say, by the Ottomans, then after centuries of mistreatment they got recognized as citizens, but in a country full of Greek-haters who'd discriminate against Greeks, from voting, to the justice system, to economic opportunity, etc, for another 100+ years after Greek emancipation....... I wonder if those Greeks would have a right to kneel during the Ottoman national anthem, or take to the streets protesting police violence, etc. I wonder if those Greeks would acknowledge that "now things are different and everybody has equal rights and opportunities" as the Ottomans would argue..... Further, the Ottomans would point out to some Greeks who serve as officers in the Grand Vizier's administration as a proof that everybody is treated equally by the system. PS... I'm not issuing a blank excuse to the Greeks to be violent or anything, but if some people excuse the violence of, gasp, sports fans, then it makes you wonder whether a people "after a long train of abuses..." should do. (John Locke had the answer)
  17. ya vol herr commandant (I hope you're kidding)
  18. For some time Greek coins were being used at vending machines, laundromats, parking meters, etc, in New York. This was the best:
  19. The breakup of black families went on for a loooong time under slavery and even under the segregated south. A sub-culture can last generations, and it's not like the problems of racism and discrimination disappeared in the distant past. When Obama's parents met, several states didn't allow interracial marriage! Check the Loving case (so appropriate named after Richard and Mildred Loving--a biracial couple in the 1960s). We're talking about events that you or your parents experienced; it's not ancient history. Growing up with this in your background, I'd bet you'd be angry, even if you don't condone violence, you wouldn't trust the ..authorities. The natives, who actually are the truly legal residents here, have similar problems, but they don't get attention because they were put in reservations.
  20. ^^^ but JVC that's a different argument we've seen in this thread. your approach merits a serious discussion, which I'm afraid can't happen here. I'd agree that the black leadership has failed their community; single-parent and poor is a bad combination, but we have to find out why. Not trying to absolve anyone of personal responsibility, but conditions and history matter. Normalizing something bad ain't good. [and, on a side but similar note, that's my problem with Trumpism... I can't normalize that kind of politics]
  21. Who are these guys? They look like Serbs or Albanians? Turks? Maybe in the picture with a Macedon they're Skopjans?
  22. Trump and cronies are not patriots. They're crooked and corrupt to the bone. They have no intellectual abilities, and their reasoning capacity is in the minus. Oh, and also lie about everything, and then they call you a liar for exposing them. So, he's ..truthful about having a solution for stuff he lied about! (fake facts) To highlight some of the points in this video, which can independently verified (not that I have any expectations the cult drones will do so): Trump and his drones saying he had the largest crowd and that God made good weather for him Politifact verifies that 70% of Trump statements are false/lies, and that doesn't include words like "terrific" "great" "I alone" "loser" etc. I'm saying the other 30% is him repeating the same words 3 times in a sentence Mass voter fraud while offering no proof of that, and not one Secy of state (R or D) agrees with Trump; @14:30 "millions of illegal voters"... @3:10 Trump's divorce from reality impacts policy decisions and how the US gov sees the world claims up to 42% unemployment @ 4:20 brags about sizes, including with blg, Trump Tower; his 58 floor bldg became 68! US GDP below zero! (which of course is impossible) lied about Obama's birth certificate for 8 years. lied about "thousands of Muslims celebrating" the attacks of 9-11 in NJ The murder rate is the "highest it has ever been in 45 yrs, while the FBI statistics show the opposite for the last 55 yrs. has not clue about the "triad of nuclear" US strategy @ 8:30 relies on rumors, unsubstantiated personal impressions (or dreams), conspiracy idiots like Jones, Faux News, Breitbart (and Banon), Alt-right... you know, the stuff that birth control makes women ugly and crazy, Plant Parenthood is controlled by Nazis, and that the Confederate flag represents a glorious tradition, and thousands of people celebrated 9-11 in NJ, but the liberal media failed to document this celebration. Breitbart: "Trump vindicated".. @12:00 How Trumps relies on INFOWARS (wingnut Alex Jones) for his news and admires AJ. Same a**hole who claims that Sandyhook school massacre was fake (with actors), because gosh guns don't kill children. Come to think of it, several of our members have been repeating his garbage here..... and demand, yes, demand we respect them and their stupid views. geesh [you know who you are, but if you've forgotten I can name you] Trump to Jones: "I just wan to say your reputation is amazing.... I will not let you down" so many people believe Trump because they get their "news" from him and the garbage generators that support him. Some of our members here are like that. They're immune to anything that may even slightly contradict their cultish devotion @ 23:10 what a false statement is and what a lie is.... the latter when you repeat something false after being presented with facts. the view articulated from the White House: the power of the president will not be challenged.... Like the Nixonean view: if the president does it, it's not illegal.
  23. So, what is really the argument here, in this thread? One side argues the police is the victim and that blacks are unreasonable in their behavior and demand. The other side (those here not everyone with BLM) argues that blacks have been discriminated and abused since the creation of the US. This doesn't give them the right to break the law, but who the hell is arguing that anyway? I see too many straw-man arguments here: some people construct something extreme (or imaginary) to beat up and somehow prove their point. Now which side is closer to the truth? I'd like to ask the proud Hellenes to put themselves in the position of blacks, with the experience of 200+ years their group has had, and tell me how most of you would behave? And, would you own those who use violence (in rhetoric and action) against those who have been mistreating you? I haven't seen anyone here who supports justice arguing for brutality. With the wide availability of video cameras and smart phones it's been easier to expose abuse, which abuse was undoubtedly went on for years without remedy, because it was often the police word that counted.
  24. You can "read" whatever you want, and draw your own erroneous conclusions. At the risk of my post being edited/deleted/whatever, here's some schooling: You don't seem to understand the difference between Rebublican and conservative. I keep saying "conservatives" are the problem. Conservatives who have opposed progress--like the abolition of slavery, desegregation, women's rights, minority rights, separation church-state, consumer protection, voting rights, science education, social safety net, national parks, health care, etc, etc. Those conservatives have been present in both major political parties. The Republican party was the progressive party from 1860 to early 20th c. Teddy Roosevelt (R) was the leader of the progressive movement; he came out of retirement to run against prez Taft (R) in 1912 because it was the time the GOP was becoming beholden to big money and unregulated capitalism. FDR transformed the Dem party into a progressive coalition that fell apart in the 1950s and 1960s. Why? Because the conservatives from the South didn't like progress, especially desegregation! The so-called Dixiecrats were Dems who left the party and joined the Repubs. What is conservatism according to you? What have conservatives tried to conserve? In my opinion, the want to conserve some pretty bad stuff, regressive policies unfit for a modern enlightened society. As for the Iraqi ban (as you so proudly mention in your post) here's the truth from Factcheck. The cult Trump drones repeat the nonsense the cult leader puts out. And, yes, the truth has a liberal bias.
