FIBA WORLD BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Soprano76 replied to plato-ny's topic in Greek National Team, and BBall News
All we would need is 2nd place in that USA group to advance to the knockouts though, which is totally do-able. Greece is far and away the 2nd best team among the 8 squads in group E and F. -
The good thing regarding UEFA qualifying is that head-to-head takes precedence over goal differential. So while I would love to see a 3-0 win, a 1-0 win won't be the first tie-breaker to kill us.

Cyprus - San Marino (21 Mar. 2019, GSP , Lefkosia)

Hats off to the lads. I don't expect them to qualify but it would be wonderful if they could. -
Fetfa just scored a nice goal from outside the box as well.

I read on a Greek sports site that PAOK will be at Kaftanzoglio for the next 3 seasons so that Nea Toumba will be built. Hope it's true.
-
Shame on the PAO ultras. Greeks are morons.

Apologies @Lazarus, I could have sworn that Beto was not a national rep (House or Senate) before his announcement for President. I misspoke and should have been more informed before commenting. Either way, I think it's a bad look for someone who loses an election to then have their next move be running for president. Beto did make it close in red-hot Texas though. The Dem field has so many question marks. I'm really interested to see how appealing Bernie is to the general electorate. His politics are also a little cagey to me. He claims to be a democratic socialist, yet many/most of his policies seem to be out of the social democrat playbook. And democratic socialism =/= social democracy. If he is a social democrat, I wouldn't be totally against him. If he is a democratic socialist, count me out.

It's almost amazing how Greek basketball totally has its **** together despite the economic crisis yet greek footy is going down the drain...

This election cycle is shaping up to have a crowded field... though I can't say I agree with people like Beto, who have yet to hold major public office, running for President. Some things that I think the majority of Americans support: universal healthcare, climate action, tighter gun control, net neutrality, and pushing big money out of politics. But how will you get any of this to resonate in flyover country? The electoral college quite clearly complicates things.

Greece are in terrible form with bad players. They have struggled to put more than one goal past teams like Estonia for a few years now. Players are barely doing anything for their clubs... Mitroglou is washed, Donis is a bench player on a relegation level Bundesliga side, etc. We may have tied them last game in Bosnia but the time before that in WC 2014 qualifying Greece was pummeled. I won't expect much from the Ethniki, either now or in the future. 2004-2014 was anomaly.
-
I won't be surprised if Bosnia knocks the doors off of Greece.
-
Bravo to Siopis and Valerianos.. I imagine it's been some time since an Aris player was called up to the Ethniki

As unpopular as Trump is, being the incumbent gives him a huge advantage. Not to mention the people who have stuck with him until now will ride the ship until it sinks.
-
PAOK benefits from a strong Aris and vice versa. The self destructive nature of Greeks throughout history never ceases to amaze me lol.
-
Seems like PAOK have sealed the protathlima this season... bravo paidia!

AEK are looking to repeat as Basketball Champions League winners. They also won an international club competition as well.. didn't know AEK had such a strong basketball club..

It's amazing to me that the EPO has not really invested any of the money from the major tournaments Greece played in from 2004-2014. Weren't there rumors of a national academy building built?
-
Apparently they are certain to be relegated due to match fixing. Will be on -6 points at the start of next year too.
-
I'm gonna pass on Durmisaj and even Vrousai
