It seems so odd to me that Fetfa has been essentially blacklisted from NT these past few years. Is it really because he's playing in Saudi Arabia? I find that hard to believe. Not saying the guy is a world beater by any means, but he's pacey and provides the type of spark that the Ethniki is largely missing.

It cannot be just about the league he plays in. As I had stated in a recent post, so many top tier national teams still pick players that in play in clubs for a paycheck like in China. Carrasco and Witsel who will both be on Belgium`s world cup team, for example, both play in China. Furthermore, we keep calling up a sub par Tziolis who plays in the same league as Fetfa.

There is something deeper in the Fetfa saga.

One player I always thought was overlooked is Nikos Machlas....a prolific scorer in Greece but also in Holland when the Dutch league had real quality.

Soccer, unlike more physical sports, like American football, relies more on finesse than size, strength and speed, and there is surely a lesser drop from modern players and those of eras past.

That said, conditioning, training and nutrition have evolved immensely. Brazil of today would likely have their way with Pele`s Brazil, pound for pound.

The game will be played at OAKA in Athens after EPO chickened out to the hysteria in Greek media.

Can you explain this more in depth. Were they worried about bad press leaving the match to be played out at Toumba? Is it punishment in terms of lost revenue for PAOK because of this past weekend? Are they legitimately worried of fan demonstrations? What exactly coerced this move?

He gave an assist yesterday against Gent (1-2 home loss) in the last round of Jupiler Pro League. All in all he scored four times and gave three assists in 14 games for Racing Genk. Thats not bad.

Other Greeks who play in the same championship: Marinos started as Charleroi lost to Kortrijk (2-0). His team finished third. He missed only one game in the whole year and gave four assists. He should have been called up to the NT considering that he has been in top form in the last 10 months or so. Kitsiou was in the starting XI of Sint-Truiden as they lost at home (0-1), Goutas came off from the bench, Charisis was not even on the bench. Galitsios signed recently for Mouscron. He played four games in the season, they lost all of those games. This time he was on the bench as they lost to Eupen (4-0). His team finished 14th, they just avoided relegation. Kolovos played 12 games for Mechelen (no assists or goals, does anybody remember how he was considered a white hope for the future?). They finished last and got thus relegated. Koutroubis went recently to Standard Liege. He played four games and they didnt lose any of them.

Thanks for the rundown. That could also fit nicely into the ''Other Greek Abroad'' thread which concentrates on lower profile players outside Greece.

Belgium is ok for now if he continues to start for his team....and if he continues scoring and establishes himself as a goal scorer he'll certainly get noticed by a bigger club in a better league....much better than getting a transfer prematurely and then riding the pine hoping to break into the line up

Yes you are not wrong about that. Just would like to see him in Germany or France sooner than later. I think a lot of us see him as a 22 year-old; He's 26 - only 3 years younger than Mitroglou - and it`s time to make some noise.

Donis in my opinion is our most threatening attacker. I believe if we have these players in the field at the same time we could see a more a faster and threatening attack:

Pelkas, Galanopoulos, Tachtsidis, Donis, Karelis, Fetfatzidis or Gianniotas.

All of a sudden you have got players who can control the ball well and move off it aswell. If Karelis can continue scoring then I don't see why he doesn't start over Mitroglou.

I want to see Karelis in a more competitive league.

@Argy who do you think can replace Lazaros at right wing?

He is probably our best left wing, even though Stafylidis can probably do the job. He is still replaceable, since we don`t necessarily have to play a LW scheme, as we can play with a LM, and besides he is not that far ahead of the rest of that pack. Irreplaceable core is really guys that stand out and that other teams circle on the game sheet; a player whose team is automatically better when he steps on the field. I consider Laz an important player for this campaign, but fact remains that the ship wouldn`t sink without him.

That’s actually a great piece but dunno if the journo or Skibbe have an eye of those players, what I know is we need to start getting most of those guys into the team and leave out the “regular” dud call ups that’s been manditory on this team for... ever

Much has changed from when this article was written two months ago. Notably Karnezis now looks like a regular for Watford and Kapino found a team in Notthingham Forest.

We will see in a week or so... please No Tziolis!! And if he is picked, Fetfa should at least get a look in

There must be something more to this Fetfa fiasco. Cannot be systematically ignored because of the league he plays in. There are many players in their prime playing in China for the paycheck that currently get called up for their NTs, including Axel Witsel and Yannick Carrasco (just found this one out!) for Belgium, Renato Augusto for Brazil, and many more.

There is certainly some kind of rift between his people and EPO.

My view of Greece leading up for the upcoming Nations League and Euro campaign:

Irreplaceable core: Sokratis (C), Manolas, Papadopoulos, Donis, Mitroglou, Retsos

Important but replaceable core: Karnezis, Fortounis, Stafylidis, Zeca, Lazaros, Samaris, Mantalos, Tachtsidis

Players who can earn a place in core: Gianniotas, Bakasetas, Pelkas, Lykogiannis, Galanopoulos, Androutsos, Kourbelis, Kapino

Players on way out: Torosidis, Tziolis, Tzavellas, Maniatis

Fringe players that may be in and out of squad: Oikonomou, Koutroubis, Bouchalakis, Anestsis, Vellios

Dark horses that may play a role: Siovas, Bakakis, Lamprou, Masouras, Limnios, Siopis, Kone, Fetfatzidis

Should have definitely added Mavropanos as a dark horse. He deserves to be somewhere on this list. Will probably not play because of our CB depth, but should be around the team seeing he and Retsos, at the moment, are in line to be our CBs of the future.

Irreplaceable Core: I add Christodoulopoulos in there for the next year or two. His form is just too hot.

Good rundown overall, but as much as I think Lazaros will play an important role, he is not irreplaceable. That is too strong a statement and he doesn`t belong in the same category as Sokratis and Manolas.

So many names being thrown around but I think we should wait for newbies to at least have one good season as a starter before they make the 11ada.

androutsos barely starts for oly. pelka if paok keeps form is more deserving imo.

will be more conclusive by summer on who should get called up or not.

let's hope that paok's deduction in points is not deciding factor on who wins the league and the true best team wins.

really need to consider 3 atb with sokratis, manolas, retsos/kpaps.

Bakakis and Staf as wing backs...

I think the above is undeniable currently to start if starting. ??? pending on form. * marks who's most in form from the below imo.

at CAM = fortounis, pelkas*, mantalos

at CDM = Samaris, Tachtsi, Galanopoulos*, Kourbelis

at RB = Torosidis, Bakakis*, Koutris, Retsos

    useful subs

    fetfa

    karelis

bakasetas (beast for AEK this season depth in LM/CAM/CF position... though seems dead weight for NT thus far)

tzavellas (gives depth for lb/cb position and steps it up for NT... sorry not sorry.)

Some very good points in there. The writing is on the wall for us to play a 3-CB formation. We have one of the deepest pools of quality CBs in Europe and we have mobile wing backs. Our best players have to play in order for us to have the best shot at succeeding.

Koutris is definitely an interesting name I left our in my initial assessment.

Tzavellas, I agree, I don`t mind having him as a sub for the next campaign. When I placed him on players on their way out, I didn`t necessarily mean all of them right away. Torosidis and Tzavellas may still have a role to play for the next 2 years.

I'm all for Pelkas to be given a shot over Fortounis, who seems lackadaisical with the NT.

I definitely agree about the important but replaceable core. I would add Barkas in the dark horses. But the thing is I would play all of those players in the team. Maybe not altogether but they would be in the team.

I don't think Retsos is irreplaceable. His best position is centre back and we know how stacked we are there.

All we know is that these players will get called up:

Karnezis, Paschalakis, Gianniotis, Galanopoulos and Limnios.

Paschalakis and Barkas, another couple of names I initially overlooked.

I have Retsos as irreplaceable more due to his talent and potential rather than his current role. What I mean is that he should be a shoe in callup every time and will likely end up playing a big role, even if it is as RB.

  13. Even if he can, we don`t need to force feed players positions anymore. Right now, we already have Retsos that is a CB and can play RB, and he is much better than Hatzidiakos. Vs Croatia, we had Maniatis, Zeca and Retsos playing out of position, and although 2/3 fared pretty well individually, all things considered, the team was in shambles. This isnt a sustainable solution and we need to start developing and playing guys in their natural positions.

All that said, in Retsos' case, if he is truly our best option at RB right now, then he should start in that position, also considering he has three bulls in front of him in the CB pecking order. He is an exception rather than the rule.
