  1. We better hope we can hold a top 50 spot after these results because we are in threat of dropping to Pot 4 in the EURO2020 qualifying which could see us drawing 3 formidable opponents with higher rankings than us. Draw is on January 24th.

The fact that we are so low in the fifa rankings means we will have two difficult opponents in our group which will make it a lot more difficult to qualify for the euros.. I understand the nations cup also will give us a chance but even still it won't be easy and it's not a given that we will make it.. Our Fifa ranking are really going to hinder our opportunities.. As far as the NT I do think we have some good pieces but as long as our Mid is so weak and consists of  Samaria,Taxi, Tziolis we are never going to be able to create enough and it will never allow us to take that step forward as a team. There is No question I think we need to play with two attackers going forward as it makes it very easy for teams just to focus on a Mitro without a second option.. I'm also afraid that we are wasting the years of Socratis and Manolas that's why we need to fix this asap.. I We do have a good core of players but now we need to introduce some young guys and get rid of the dead weight.. Donis, Karelis,Mitro give me hope up front and out back end is solid, our Mid will be the biggest issue.. Missing this tournament is a very tough pill to swallow as it's going to even more difficult when the tournament starts..

You are absolutely right, but we were in the same situation before groups were set for WCQ and we ended up with Bosnia as our POT 2 opponent. Could have just as well been Switzerland, France or Italy though so we were fortunate. It's very much the luck of the draw. Poland was in POT 3 same as us but got Wales and Austria from POT 1 and 2 and ended up winning the group handily.

oh yeah let's put mantalos on the bench, an important part of a europa league team to start this average man.

i mean we would to qualify in the world cup with B LEAGUE players? says a lot for the state of our football. gianniotas shouldn't even be in the talks for a call up, let alone the bench.

hopefully with mantalos, karelis and donis in, vellios, gianniotas and diamantakos will be kicked out once and for all :)

Mantalos is really bad with the NT. I want him to be good too but he was given so much opportunity and has done nothing.

You feel so strongly about Gianniotas out when he was the only one who showed flare yesterday and guts.  Not Fortounis who roams the pitch praying no one will pass to him because he will panic.

  4. 8 minutes ago, Boxou said:

from whom is he going to get that spot? lazaros and mantalos start for aek, donis for stuttgart, and mpakasetas is not a winger to say he will get replaced by him. his natural position is behind the striker. even pelkas is a starter in paok and i don't like him that much tbh. on the other side gianniotas is a bench warmer in a mid table second spanish division club.

so, who do you think deserves it more?

He takes it from impotent Mantalos who should not be starting.

  5. 10 minutes ago, Boxou said:

maybe because he is simply an average football player? the fact that no one of the last 5-6 olympiakos coaches kept him in the squad speaks volumes.

There are lots of average players, but Gianniotas gives it a go every time he gets a shot, gives us a rare glimpse of flare and creativity, and he even scored as a sub a couple of games ago. Deserves a spot on the roster.

squad should be like that in the qualifiers and the nations league.

    GK; karnezis, kapino, vlachodimos

    RB; torosidis, mpakakis

    RCB; sokratis, retsos

    LCB; manolas, papadopoulos

    LB; stafylidis, lykogiannis

    CDM; zeca, kourmpelis

    AMF samaris, tachtsidis

    RW; donis, mpakasetas

    AM; fortounis, pelkas

    LW; mantalos, lazaros

    CF; mitroglou, karelis

Gioannitoas was dynamite yesterday in the short time he was on he deserves to be on there. Torosidis' service was atrocious. It may be time for him to go and give Sokratis the permanent captaincy like he deserves.

  7. Look at how Sweden played today. They just beat Italy 1-0. Their team on paper is not better than ours, but they start the right players, play a great system and with confidence. You can see they truly believe they belong on the pitch with Italy, unlike Greece who fielded an XI full of defenders slotted in every position. We came into the match with belief, but only if we completely park the bus. This is why we are are so fragile and nervous, because our whole mindset revolves around being the little engine that could. The moment we get over this, is the moment we will take a big step forward.

He is 32 and next year he will be 33 when the World Cup (that he s gonna miss) happens. No point to pick him. I suppose he has twice as much dignity as Tziolis has and he will retire on his own. It is the right thing to do.

    1) If Toro was to retire he'll wait for 7 caps to hit the centennial

    2) Is anyone pushing him to retire? Yes, Retsos can replace him, but he is very young and a natural CB. We have no legitimate RB replacement in the pipeline unless you consider Lykogiannis or 26 yr old Bakakis, but despite Toro's age, they are still a big drop-off.

The bad thing: Sokratis is getting older year by year. Noone has realised hes 29-30 today.

Exactly this. He is the best player Greece has ever produce and, after failing to qualify to WC18, realistically has one potential tournament left in him, as he will be turning 32 on June 9 around the time Euro 2020 begins.

At Euro 2020 this will be the age of our current core (note I have omitted certain players that should not be on the team for the qualifying campaign):

    Karnezis (34), Kapino (26)

    Sokratis (32), Manolas (29), K Papadopoulos (28), Torosidis (35), Retsos (21), Stafylidis (25)

    Zeca (31), Samaris (31), tachtsidis (29)

    Donis (23), Mitroglou (32)

do you actually have hope that Skibbe will field a line up and setting a formation that will allow us to even have a shot at a couple goals?? Skibbe right now is playing for his job and he will play a style not to concede and he will also be happy with a 1-0 win or a draw just to keep face...He will not risk pushing guys forward and have the results end up like last game as he doesn't want to go out like that.. This game will be a "boring defensive game" we will play the majority of our players back and again play not to concede. In Skibbes mind its over he just wants to prove his defensive style works and save face.. The style we need to play to get 3 goals Skibbe wont allow it..

Yesterday only 2 of starting 11 were natural offensive players. We really can't see a more defensive lineup on Sunday than that garbage we saw in the first leg. Things like his last minute panic switch of Maniatis replacing Retsos are reminiscent of Rehhagel's last minute Vyntra over Kyrgiakos in WC10, which led to embarassment. We will never get anywhere is this loser mindset.

  11. Our midfield is atrotious and it is time to broaden our view and open our mind to what else we had out there. You cannot tell me that Fetfatzidis would be have been more useless than Fortounis or have been a worse sub than Bakasetas. We are so lacking on attacking midfield and on the wings how can we systematically ignore players that can offer some skill and creativity?

... and another thing is im sick and tired of greeks taking club football so serious. this is where it counts for Godsake world cups & European cups. Club football comes no where near national team football. As an ethnos we hugely have problems amongst ourselves I couldn't care less who wins the championship it means nothing when you win it with 10 foreigners produce some players.

You will get lots of backlash for this. I think this all depends on the culture in which you grew up, both societal and domestic. Lots of people inherited love for their club from a parent or grandparent and grew up watching matches on Sundays. Truth is, there is a lot more action in club football as they play often, and gives a lot more for people to discuss. This was also rooted in the old days when most players in the league were Greek. Pre-2004 our NT didn't give Greeks much to cheer about and before the internet it was pretty hard to keep tabs on international football.

Even thought this point in my life, I feel a lot more connection with the Greek NT than any club, loyalty to a club is a personal sentiment and it is more than legitimate.

Our acadamies are not producing players like other balkan nations our players are not as hungry for glory! We should be the best in the Balkans! Population wise including the diaspora  we are way bigger than other nations in our region

You are right but when we have talent out of the academy like Retros and keep him on the bench because Skibbe is chicken s%$#! and started Maniatis because he is safer, then it comes down to not playing your talent that is there.

IMO, Sokratis, Zeka, Mitroglou and to a lesser degree Fortounis were the only ones that pay OK. The rest play horrible (except Tsiolis that was the usually average)

Listen, I don't think it can even be argued how atrocious Fortounis was. So weak and impotent.

Credit to Skibbe for starting defensive players all the way up the pitch to right wing. Poor baby Skibbe was afraid.

@Argy I believe the guy's Bosnian, and the group you won over Croatia was for EURO 2012, not WC 2010 ;)

Anyhow, I'm very disappointed with the Greek team. When Sokratis scored, I was sure it will get quite tight and I was really scared it might easily turn into a drama, 2:2 or something, but most of your players under-performed. On the other hand, most of our players did quite a good job. I believe now you can see the work of the new coach and the way he refreshed the whole atmosphere around the team. It's always "Never say never" in football, but I think this one is 99% over. I can only see this result being compromised by an early Greek goal in Athens. If not...

Ah yes you are right Euro 2012.

We lost so many fifty fifty balls and were dispossed so easily.

Tzavellas had one of the worst games ever as did Fortounis. Karnezis looked so uncomfortable.

only guys who played were Sokratis and Zeca.

Assist to FIFA for banning Manolas.

KPap was good too I think and Mitrgolou tried to create by himself with nothing to work with, so credit to him.

We will be better at the back in the 2nd game with manolas returning, how on earth are we gonna find 3 goals? Had the feeling all week we were gonna get blown out, the cros themleeves knew they had to put space between us, they can come and play relaxed now. Of all games to play like that. Even more gut wrenching I can see a 2-0 for us which is gonna hurt more. I refuse to believe we will see such a poor performance on Sunday, will anyone even turn up?

Manolas is great but papadopoulos did the job. The problem is our wings.

as an aek supporter I don't rate mandalos. but yet again I don't know who is worse mandalos or foutounis. is it that the greek league has dropped in quality so much that these guys are stand outs.

He's so bad. How can you not talk about players like Fetfa and even dare I say Ninis!! Are you telling me they would have been less sharp, less creative?
