That's correct. In men except for maybe Douvalidis in every other track race we fair quite badly. Our star athletes will have to place at the top to grab those points, but I see only Tentoglou getting first place. It will be very tough to stay in the top division.

Some new rules in this competition. So I found out it is after all bottom 3 gets relegated. Top three gets the medals.
In the throwing and horizontal jumping disciplines, all 16 athletes will get 3 jumps or throws. Top 8 advances for 2 more attempts. Top 4 does the final attempt. In the vertical jump disciplines, four misses and you are done. Not the usual rules where you go over a height and advance further. In the hurdles and sprints, there will be 2 heats. They are placed into that heat according to the athletes season's best. If Greece finishes around 12th or 13th place overall, we will be in good shape.

Greece got off to a slow start on day 1, thankfully they ended pretty strong thanks to great performances from Tsiamis, Karalis, and our 100 meter sprinters. Greece is second to last with 73, with Turkey 71 and the Czech Republic 77.5.

The results from day 1

Greece started off strong in the first two events, then started to struggle a bit. Very disappointing results from Stefanidi, Pavlidis, Douvalidis, Karydi and Gnafaki. Was expecting more points from them. Big surprise from the women's 800 meters as Despollari got her PB and got some much need points in the middle distance event. Relay teams did very well, with a little help from some teams DQ from their respective competitions. Greece is now out of the relegation level and will need a much stronger performance on Sunday (Day 3).

The results from day 2
Men's hammer throw - Michail Anastasakis 74.12 (14 points)
Men's long jump - Miltos Tentoglou 8.34 EL (16 points)

Women's pole vault - Katerina Stefanidi 4.40 (8.5 points)
Men's 110 meter hurdles - Kostas Douvalidis 13.90 (5 points)
Women's 100 meter hurdles - Elisavet Pesiridou 13.22 (10 points)
Women's 800 meters - Georgia-Maria Despollari 2:02.31 PB (7 points)
Men's 1500 meters - Sergios Diakostefanis 3:50.57 (1 point)
Men's discus throw - Dimitris Pavlidis 45.79 (1 point)
Women's triple jump - Spyridoula Karydi 12.92 (7 points)
Women's 400 meter hurdles - Dimitra Gnafaki 56.63 (8 points)
Men's 400 meter hurdles - Dimitris Levantinos 51.29 (3 points)
Women's 4 x 100 relay - Greece 43.81 (10 points)
Men's 4 x 100 relay - Greece 39.34 (8 points)

The performance of Pavlidis was nothing but major failure on his part. He was almost 20 meters behind his best mark. Karydi was poor all season and we should have sent somebody who was consistently jumping over 13 meters this year. As for Stefanidi, she is at the end of her career and it's understandable that she can't perform any more like she used to. The problem is that there is nobody to replace her right now. Even with 4.40m she is the best we have right now. Same goes for Douvalidis. Nobody to take his place. Gnafaki did ok. She was only slightly off from her PB.

Going to the 3rd and deciding day, I think we have a decent chance to remain in the top division. All the athletes will have to achieve marks close or above their seasonal best. I just hope it does not come down to the last race, the 4x400m mixed relay. We really have some weak 400 meter athletes this season, specially on the men's side.

Well done to Greece! Finished the competition with 256.5 points. They survived in the first division, beating Belgium by 6.5 points.
Belgium, Turkey and Norway are relegated to the second division, Ukraine, Lithuania, and Hungary are promoted to the first division for Madrid 2025. Greece performed well today and got some good to decent performance from Tzengko, Gusin, Emmanoulidou, and Kyriazis. Speaking of Emmanoulidou, she broke a PB in the women's 200 meters at 22.85. The young girl from Thessaloniki will soon break Katernia Koffa's NR.

The results from day 3
Women's javelin throw - Elina Tzengko 59.40 (12 points)
Men's high jump - Antonios Merlos 2.13 (7 points)
Women's 200 meters - Poliniki Emmanouilidou 22.85 PB (14 points)
Men's 200 meters - Ioannis Granitsiotis 21.18 (7 points)
Men's shot put - Odysseas Mouzenidis 18.98 (6 points)
Women's long jump - Vasiliki Chaitidou 6.10 SB (outdoors) (6 points)
Women's 300 meters steeplechase - Isavella Kotsacheili 10:08.23 (5 points)
Women's high jump - Tatiana Gusin 1.87 (11 points)
Men's javelin throw - Ioannis Kyriazis 79.01 (12 points)
Men's 5000 meters - Marios Anagnostou 14:17.29 (2 points)
Women's 1500 meters - Dafni-Efthchia Lavasa 4:22.55 (1 point)
Mixed 4 x 400 meters - Greece 3:23.10 (2 points)

And congratulations to Italy in winning the European Teams Championship title. Happy to see our fellow Mediterranean neighbors victorious.

In the end we managed to stay in the top division, but it was close.

With few exception most of our athletes under performed. We could have done much better.

Ioannis Kyriazis could miss the upcoming 2025 European Athletics Team Championships in Madrid, Spain due to a shoulder injury during his meet in Nairobi, Kenya. He is waiting for an MRI to see the extend of the damage in his throwing shoulder.

Posted

I think either one will be ok for the European Team competition. I would go with Zaltos.

What is extraordinary is the fact that so far this season we have 9 hammer throwers over 70 meters (and 5 over 75 meters), something unheard of in the past.

Posted

Mantzouranis decided not be part of the team for the European Team competition. Zaltos is thinking of doing the same, so in the end it might either Anastasakis or Frantzeskakis that will represent Greece in the competition.

Posted

Mantzouranis is focusing on the European Under 23 Championship and the World Championship. Zaltos would definitely be a good choice, but I respect his decision. I think Franzeskakis should get the nod. He did well in 2021. Anastasakis isn't doing so well this season he is likely the odd man out for Tokyo since only three Greek hammer throwers can go unless he somehow throws over 78.20.

Posted

Can we throw Ioannis Korakidis into the mix for leading Greece in the hammer throw? He throw a Personal Best of 76.14 today in Trikala.

Posted

Korakidis got the spot on the team. I think that's a gamble. I would have preferred the more experienced Frantzeskakis.

This years European Team Championship 1st division will have 16 nations

Italy, Poland, Germany, France, Spain, Great Britain, Netherlands, Portugal, Greece, Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, Switzerland, Hungary, Ukraine, and Lithuania.

Posted

Having Korakidis on the roster over Frantzeskakis or Zaltos is not a good move. I don't think he will get anywhere close to his personal best. I can understand the other athletes to take over their usual athletes because of injuries or maternity leave.

Well Zaltos and Mantzouranis took themselves out of the team. Can't force them to compete.

Franks recently became a Greek citizen and is actually among the fastest top 5 in the men's 400 meters. He can be under dark horse of this competition. I don't know much about him, does he have Greek ancestry?

Posted

George Franks has Greek ancestry. His Greek name is George Frakgogiannis. I believe his grandfather was born in Greece an immigrated to the US.

I really like the fact that we seek athletes from other countries with Greek ancestries and welcome them to compete for Greece.

What I don't like are athletes that are bought up by other countries to change their nationalities. Latest example is several high class Jamaican athletes switching to compete for Turkey.

Christos Meletoglou SEGAS athletics director believes Greece should survive the first division. He emphasized there are certain events Greece can get valuable points including the relay teams. One can hope. I do know 3 Greek athletes who are ranked in the world's top 5 (Tzengko, Karalis, and Tentoglou) should get maximum 16 points in their respective events. The competition also hands out individual medals to athletes who perform the top three in that event from all three divisions.

Adamopoulou jumped only 4.30m, but the fact that she cleared 4.15m and 4.30m on first tries placed her in 6th place (tied with another athlete), which means she will get 10.5 points for Greece in the standings.

Let's hope for full 16 points from Karalis later today.

Say goodbye to the 16 points as Karalis withdrew from the competition. That's a big loss and brings us closer to the relegation to the 'B' group.
