Greece’s three gold medallists from the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships have been named on their team roster for the European Athletics Team Championships Super League in Bydgoszcz, Poland from 9-11 August.

The Greeks just avoided relegation in Lille Metropole two years ago with a ninth-place finish, only eight points clear ahead of the relegation zone. Ekaterini Stefanidi provided one of three crucial victories across the programme and the reigning world, Olympic and European champion is among the standout names on the team sheet.

There were also victories two years ago from European 400m silver medallist Maria Belibasaki in the 200m and European champion Paraskevi Papahristou in the triple jump. Papahristou is contesting both the long jump and triple jump in Bydgoszcz while Belibasaki has entered four events: 200m, 400m, 4x100m relay and the 4x400m relay.

The Greek contingent will also be expecting to add significant points to the team tally in the men's jumping and throwing events. Reigning European indoor and outdoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou is competing in the long jump, European bronze medallist Dimitrios Tsiamis, 37, is named in the triple jump and Konstadinos Baniotis and Konstadinos Filippidis will compete in the high jump and pole vault respectively.

The Greek team also features Mihail Anastasakis in the hammer while 18-year-old Dimitrios Tsitsos makes his senior debut three weeks after winning bronze in the javelin at the European Athletics U20 Championships.

Due to the change in format which was agreed by the European Athletics Council in November, the European Athletics Team Championships Super League will be streamlined from twelve to eight countries from 2021 onwards which means five countries instead of three will be relegated into the First League.

Maria Belibasaki will not be able to participate in multiple races as she is not fully healed from a leg injury. That is a major blow as Lykourgos-Stefanos Tsakonas is also another big name sprinter not to take part in the European Athletics Team Championships. Ioannis Kyriazis is still suspended from any athletics activity pending on his doping case.

In this competition, I do expect Greece to be relegated, but hopefully in 2021 they will fight for first place and promotion back to the super league. All I want is the Greek athletes to give themselves the best showing they could possibly give.

Here is what I think the outcome will be
1. Poland
2. Germany
3. France

4. Great Britain
5. Italy
6. Spain
7. Ukraine
8. Czech Republic (R)
9. Greece (R)
10. Switzerland (R)
11. Sweden (R)
12. Finland (R)

In my honest opinion, had Tsakonas, Belibasaki, and Kyriazis all competed in this competition with a little help of better performances from some Greek athletes, they might have finish 7th and remain in the Super League.

Even without those 3 we had a chance of staying in the top division. Some of our athletes did not even come close to their best performances this year. Also I believe in some disciplines the wrong athletes were picked to compete.

Don't understand why Stefanidi is not competing in the pole vault. I think Papachristou should compete in triple jump even though Karydi has better performance so far this year. Experience counts in these kind of competitions.

I think Stefanidi would compete if Greece are playing for medal?
She didn't compete for Greece in 2015 when the team were competing in First League in Heraklion.
Papachristou indeed should competing in the triple jump, she could perform better and improve on her 13.83 this season.

So by judging which countries are competing in the First League, Greece will have a hard time finishing in the top 2 to get promoted to the Super League. At least Greece isn't bad enough to finish in the bottom 3 for relegation to the Second League.

According to projections taking into account current marks by all the athletes taking place, Greece will finish in 7th place ( out of 12). Ireland is not showing up for the competition, so that remains two other countries to be relegated. Hopefully we will not have to worry about that. As for finishing in the promotion sports (top 2) it's almost impossible as we have some glaring  weakness in the mid and long distance events.

Greece is going to struggle big time since most of our male athletes in track events will not finish above the bottom 3 or 4. Only our male athletes in field events have to make up it's huge amount of points. Same goes with the women with the exception Poliniki will thrive in the 100 and 200 meters. Some of our female athletes in the field event should do OK. Will see.
