  1. What are you doing, man?  Don't you remember that a few years ago I was fighting a bunch of people here on such matters of historical truths?

Let's just say that what most modern Greeks know of their history is based on school books that omit half of the pertinent events and on popular myths that most countries make up to foster nationalism.

  2. Getting 1-1 tie today was a great achievement against a much stronger team like Belgium. I think the new coach has the same recipe as Otto, play strong defense, frustrate the opponents, never mind about playing attractive football, and score on counter-attacks. It won't be pretty but given the talent available, Greece can achieve good things in football if they have discipline and a good plan. [things that lack in the greater society]

  3. The times have changed. Drive-by shootings and uniformed comments should not be allowed here. Enough of this b.s., fake news, and promoting idiocy. I thought we went over that...

    So, here what historically happened:

When the Dems had control of Congress in Obama's first 2 years, we got the new health care that insured tens of millions of uninsured, covered pre -existing conditions, removed coverage lifetime caps, etc. Flawed by sensible system. Oh, and not forget the stimulus package that took us out of the great recession. He also saved the auto industry, made Wall Street pay back the bailout money, killed Osama, etc.

This all in the face of the "party of no" that sabotaged Obama every single step of the way. When the Repubs were in the minority in the Senate they filibustered all the way, and when they got the majority they were even worse.

So, what happened to "I have a terrific plan that will cover everyone, for lower cost and better coverage" than the Obamacare? Well, what happened is that he said, "no one knew healthcare would be so complicated" [shows how unprepared and ignorant he is] ...and "I'm best in making deals" to not being able to sell Trumpcare to his own party that controls Congress.

    Are we great yet?....

  4. You guys have no chance at Leoforos!  It'll be PAO-AEK for the final.:characters-364221:

Though seriously, at this point any team can win the cup. Same for the playoffs. What makes me a bit confident for PAO is that they seem to be clicking in ways not seen in a very long time. Yes, gavroi are they worst in many years, but not even having a scoring chance at the derby may indicate PAO is getting stronger.

  5. It's a new reality, soccer in Greece won't be as big as when it had the virtual monopoly. Empty stadiums aren't good. I think a 35 thousand seat home would be fine.  Unless someone shows me credible arguments or evidence that a bigger stadium would fill most of the time, plus the projections into the future (which is admittedly hard to do), I just don't see big investments into Greek soccer. It's not only the stadiums (most of which are like a Third World country's), but the general state of the sport. There has to be a massive investment into building great teams that can seriously compete in Europe... and by compete I mean maybe reach the quarter finals.... The gap between half a dozen top teams and the rest is getting wider.

  6. If we are to raise the living standards for humanity, there has to be population reduction. Even if you could, by magic, wanted to raise every human to the level of affluence in the US, you couldn't do it. You'd need 3 more earths. Technology can do so much, but there's a finite level of resources. One way to improve the world and reduce birth rates is to raise the status of women.

In advanced countries, life spans doubled in the last 100 years! Doubled! But, the problem of population growth is in poor countries. Religion, culture, and economics in those countries perpetuate the problem of overpopulation.

By the way, we farm very close to 100% of arable land, and there are water shortages worldwide, especially water for human consumption. A couple billion of people don't have access to clean water. Polluted water isn’t just dirty—it’s deadly. Some 1.8 million people die every year of diarrheal diseases like cholera. Tens of millions of others are seriously sickened by a host of water-related ailments—many of which are easily preventable.

  7. Some of the wealthy who support Trump and the GOP think that they can escape the worst of environmental problems, or they are just as idiotic and ignorant as their political base. We have a "so-caled" president who has contempt for science and thinks that global warming is a hoax! Same with the top Repub in the Senate, Inhofe (Oklahoma), says God told him it's a hoax too. His book, "The Greatest Hoax", is almost sold out on Amazon...

We collectively get what we deserve I reckon.

  8. That shows you how important the games against the lesser teams are. PAO has a history of dropping too many points to such teams.  This title is not won by Oly but lost by the other top 5 teams this year. Strama did not prepare the team well for this season. Wasted so much money too.

Anyway, this win is important because of the way it was achieved. Gavroi had no real chance to score; I think they had 1 "on target" (not really though) shot at the 14'. We could draw them in the cup or meet in the final, so our team showed that they can outplay them. Kudos to Ouzounidis too.

  9. Well, on Sunday, 19 March 2017, PAO is hosting Olympiacos. We need the win more than they do. Gavroi aren't going to lose the title, but hopefully they'll lose this game. Not only we need the points more that they do to place in the playoffs, but any game between these two teams is a huge one given the history of the two biggest soccer clubs in Greece.

This season is far from being successful for us, but we still have some goals to meet.  Gavroi have one of the worst teams in many years, so PAO could win this one if we don't concede a goal early.

With our fans there, I think the team will respond. By the way, I'm opposed to moving to OAKA, because that's not a proper soccer home. The pitch is too far away from the fans, whereas Leoforos has that advantage. Some of the better Euro stadia have the fans close to the action on the field.

  10. ^^^

OK, but, above all, don't move out of Leoforos until the new stadium is ready.

I doubt this project will boost Syriza's poll numbers, and I don't think they'll last until 2019. I wish the Giannakopoulos family had bought the football club too when they wanted it, but Tzigger refused.

  11. First, do not demolish Leofors before everything is complete. Don't be like AEK. Second, this is a big investment, and I'm afraid it's for public consumption than reality.

Why? Because the sport isn't generating big $ in this economically depressed country. The gap between healthy (and bigger) euro teams and the rest (incl. Greek teams) is getting wider. You can see that wealthy people don't want to invest in Greek clubs. Even Marinakis is cutting down a lot.

While Greece remains in basket case, I don't see any big project being done. I was young and I got old talking about the new PAO home. Back in the early 2000's (yeah, 15+ years ago!!) we had a long discussion about it here in this forum, and some members were hopeful that the new home would be ready by ..2008 on the club's 100th anniversary! They had plans, drawings, money, and the country was about to host the Olympic Games. .... bulldozers were starting shifting ground in Votaniko!  Well, we know how this turned out....:angry-687657:

As a side note..... If you had the money, would you invest in this?  And, if you lived around Goudi, would you want a football stadium in your neighborhood?  (just asking, not trying to be negative, rather be pragmatic)

  12. Although not everyone is 100% consistent, I do agree that those who preach that this country was founded (it was not) on Judeo-Christian ethics are hypocrites and morally corrupt, much like their Republican party. This NYT Op-Ed is great.

    5 hours ago, Epicurus said:

Don’t go socialist on me again. Please don’t encourage class warfare. The best way to help the needy is to give public money to the rich. That then inspires the poor to work harder, galvanizes the sick to become healthy, forces the lepers to solve their own problems rather than kick back and depend on others. That’s why any realistic health plan has to focus on providing less coverage for the poor, and big tax benefits for the rich. When millions of people lose health care, that’s when a country is great again!”

    and this:

    5 hours ago, Epicurus said:

“For the Samaritan’s work is unsustainable and sends the wrong message. It teaches travelers to take dangerous roads, knowing that others will rescue them from self-destructive behaviors. This Samaritan also seems to think it right to redistribute money from those who are successful and give it to losers. That’s socialism! Meanwhile, if the rich man keeps his money, he can invest it and create jobs. So it’s an act of mercy for the rich man to hurry on and ignore the robbery victim.”

If health care is a privilege and not a right--especially in this affluent country--then we are a morally corrupt society. Human decency and respect for human life requires health care. More Americans dies from the lack of health care (free to access it? b.s.) than they die from invasions, terrorism, or other threats. Yet, Trump and his cronies want to increase the military budget, which is higher than the next 10 countries combined, higher that the whole NATO, etc... It's appalling we make such choices.  Damn those emails on her private server, Benghazi, and her foundation.... That was the worse of HRC...  How do you like DJT now?

  13. Yeah, the president of the United States picks a fight with dept stores, and entertainers...

How did we get this buffoon is beyond me...  It's not just an ideological/political disagreement here. We all have different values and priorities, and it's OK to disagree, but this is way beyond that.... It's about a person being unqualified, intemperate, ignorant, and dangerous for the power he holds.

    Unbelievable.

  14. I sense that Erdogan will become more aggressive if he wins the referendum for expanded presidential powers, and in addition the increasing friction between Europe and Turkey will make him more nationalistic since it's not in the cards Turkey will join the EU any time soon.

  15. Yeah, I think the second penalty was very generous. But, I'm very happy that Barca went through. No matter what they think of this team, it's one of the greatest in the last dozen years.  Overturning a 4-0 score in Euro play is definitely something very, very rare. I want to see Barca-Bayern in the final.
