  1. I think the Swiss was the better team over all.

I'm not convinced about Brazil, nor Argentina. They'll need lots of luck or a different show to advance far (do they have it?)

Mexico, Croatia have been impressive, same with Russia, but Spain and Portugal (don't like), could show up big.

  2. ^^^^^

I'd have no problem if they called themselves "Salvomacedonian".... But, again as many have said already, they didn't, and Greece for decades has been rejecting anything/everything that had "Macedonia" in a name.  I'm old enough to remember discussing the same point in the 1990s, that no word "Macedonia, Macedonja, or SalvoMakedonia" was acceptable to most Greeks and their gov. Those of us in the minority then were being called names for suggesting this very name or any name the showed that "Macedonia" was not Greek.  Macedonia was only Greek--as many still suggest.

[Do those Greeks who don't want anyone else Macedonian mean that all Macedonia is only Greek?]

In the 30 years since, Greece lost the game....  Now you say the sacred ..word is acceptable to you for them to use if it starts with "Slavo"....

I'm guessing that if the North M is rejected by Greece now, that country will be known as simply Macedonia.

I'm no expert on the history of the area but it was in the 1930s that the name first started being used for Skopje. At the time it was under Nazi rule and later fell under communist rule and Tito continued to use the name for the region....obviously there were no discussions over the name and nothing could be done about it then. When communist Yugoslavia fell and the region seceded they decided to use Macedonia based on the fact that they were able to use it when the world was divided in 2 distinct spheres.

I'm no diplomat either but I think a 12 yr old can come up with better ideas to be able to discern between greek and slavic "macedonia"....I mean northern Greece is referred to nowadays as Greek Macedonia so why wouldn't they be called the republic of Slavomacedonia...and their language called Slavomacedonian. Is that to much? how about they spell the name in english the way they pronounce it : Makedonija....there are many different options that could have been taken but mysteriously weren't even suggested.... and it was up to Greece to protect their own interests...why would the EU or NATO give a crap about all this?

  3. I don't think the Skopjans asked Greece about the name 27 years ago. So there was nothing to negotiate, nothing on the table so to speak.

The vast majority of Greeks don't want Skopje to use "Macedonia" in a name. But, I really don't see what Greece would have done. OK, maybe better diplomacy....  Effective diplomacy usually requires bargaining power...

Internally, Skopje leaders couldn't give in regarding the name. They were willing to lose economically by going against Greece, though the other important players who could have pressured FYROM began to lose interest over the years, and now the big players see Skopje gov as the responsible one who has made concessions regarding the name.

    ....

PS>If a country has territorial claims against another, names don't matter, as they don't change anything.

PS2>Could it be said that Greece has territorial claims if it considers Macedonia only Greek? [I don't think Greece does, but for the sake of argument...]

  4. DJT hates the Iranian deal (because Obama dealt) but, at best, he'd get the same deal from DPR.

The latest: “The crooked Clintons are the most corrupt people in the world,” Colbert said on Wednesday night, doing his Trump impersonation. “Get me their lawyer!”  [Trump hired a Clinton's lawyer during his impeachment]

  5. I just watched PAO play Real Madrid*.... One of the best basketball games I've seen, especially against one of the best European clubs. 95-67 rout.  OK, PAO needs 2 more wins to advance but this was amazing.  If the maintain this on Thu, I think the team is peaking at the right moment.

These games may be the last ones PAO plays in the Euroleague as DG has said he'll take the team out of EL and into FIBA.

*can you imagine if the football club did something similar?...?

  6. He's responsible for hiring coaches, etc.

But, I'd be upset if I spent more than all teams combined and got a team that's not really good and with players with a casual attitude.

Is it true that Oly will be playing with U20 players for rest of season?

  7. AEK will win the title this season, and they deserve it. They haven't lost a game since Oct. In my opinion, the PAOK goal was offside since a PAOK player was interfering. Anyway, PAOK shot themselves in the foot several times this year.

As for the game AEK-PAO, I'm only hopeful that PAO shows up to play, because with what's going on in the club, I cannot expect anything more. I just read players haven't been paid since last year. Plus, the team may lose 3 points, and even worse..... Not knowing whether you'll get paid or where the team will be at end of season, having lost half of the starting roster since the start of season..... I'm surprised they play at the level they're playing.....

Middle East.  ....  I'm sure if this happens in England,  no team would dare taking this to court.....and do you know why?  Because they care about the product first.   In Greek culture,  they care about themselves first....it's a culture of feeling proud of cheating the system.   No matter the outcome of this....the Greek crap product will continue to be crap,  and the season is spoiled from every angle.  If anyone is wondering why the league is cheap,  poor fan attendance around the league,  low T.V. revenues, 10 dollar ticket price....the reason is,  the product and management of the product is poor.

My thoughts exactly. This mess is 100% Greek-made.

There is always a difference in the policies of governing parties. Sometimes smaller than others. Sometimes policies don't make it into laws. But to say it is all the same is ill advised and exactly what conservatives would like people to believe and keep them from exercising their voting choices. Why go vote if it doesn't make a difference?....

The "donor class" gets lots of benefits from an expensive political system it helps fund, and this is evident from the chasm between the super rich and the rest. However, there are still big differences between the two major political parties, and anyone who says otherwise is either trying to confuse and distract or doesn't know what he's talking about.

I don't know how the Green party and those who voted for Jill Stein (arguably may have tipped the election to Trump) can still say with a straight face that the Trump admin. is nothing different than one under HRC might have been!  Tsk...  Yeah, the Earth is elated with this bunch of anti-science, anti-environment, non-qualified and dangerous Trump people. Sure, no difference between hiring competent people in leadership positions and the  Trump charlatans. I mean, Trumpism identified the sources of our troubles: The Chinese, the Mexicans, and ..Obama.

I'd even argue that the recent tax bill wouldn't have passed under HRC. She'd be raising her own taxes to pay for health care instead of giving bigger tax breaks to the wealthy and taking health insurance from millions of Americans. Just on these two, health care and the environment, and probably now with gun control [Clinton's sensible gun control expired in 2004 and despite popular support the Repubs didn't renew it],  the differences are striking.

Oh, I almost forgot.... the Supreme Court matters a lot and this is where presidents leave a legacy for decades since their appointees stay on the bench for 20-30+ years.

  10. It seems that the gig is over, for now. Get the domestic title, play in the CL for lots of money, invest that in buying good players, etc, and repeat.  But, apparently things have changed now.

Still, Oly has the bigger budget than any other domestic team. It'll be competitive next year.

  11. The intelligence community, as explained in the video, did say that the Russians meddled in our election and they had a clear preference to help Trump by discrediting (hacking and leaking internal emails, etc) HR Clinton.  Indeed DJT and the GOP used the Russian info to attack HRC.  Last week, we learned that Russia "successfully penetrated voter systems" ....

If you think the constant leaks and attacks on HRC didn't make a difference in an election decided by a few thousand votes in 3 states, then there's no point of discussing this topic.

Those who are OK that a foreign, hostile gov interferes in our electoral process, and hacks into American emails, computer systems, etc, then they may want to check their super-patriotism at the door. (and please don't tell your patron saint, Reagan)

Inside the Muller indictments....  and how Russian oligarchs and other Putin allies spent tons of money supporting Trump in many ways. I remember how many of our (ex) members were citing those sources, pictures, hacked emails, falsehoods, etc. A major part of any US election strategy is to mobilize your voters while suppressing the turnout of the opposite voters. Democrats had/have more voters, but given HRC unpopularity, many stayed home on election day.

  12. 1. I have no ties to Lamia, but I'm happy to see smaller teams advance. I had even suggested the cup be open only to teams finishing below 3-4th place in the league. This because the Greek league is so crappy when only 2-3 top teams win it almost all the time. Oly winning so many times in the last 10+ years show how the game is fixed.

    2. Many people are to blame for PAO's condition. The organized fans have a lot of the blame in my opinion, but let's not forget it's the people at the helm who have been making the ultimate decisions how to run the club. The level of incompetence after the captain's tenure is astounding.   The fans are the fans, same in all clubs, complaining and whatever. But look at the fortunes of the other big clubs.... they fell and rose due to their leadership, not the fans!

From the BBC: Humanity 2.0... Smarter, fitter, better? "Philosopher Julian Baggini explains the radical vision of transhumanism - where humans become part-machine."

    https://www.bbc.com/ideas/videos/humanity-20-smarter-fitter-better/p05t8q6h?playlist=the-a-z-of-isms

Julian Baggini seems to think that part machine, part human is the only way forward.

There will be a different species (if we survive) in a few thousand years. We're already replacing human body parts with mechanical/electronic parts. Brain diseases, like Alzheimer's, may be cured with a microchip implant. Same with eyes, ears, etc. The key is the mind, the intelligence of a person, the self identity. But, this is pliable, I think. You wouldn't know otherwise if you were born into a certain species (transhuman?)

Many species have an average life span of 3 million years; we haven't done this yet. So, what would you choose if faced an extinction--your own or the species? Would you adapt or adopt the merging with machines? Would you choose to live in a virtual reality (in the ..Matrix) or opt for death?

Yeah, that's why we were charitable allowing Lamia to advance in the cup competition.

We are going to win every game from now on and get the title. I heard the found some Russian for a striker!

Look, when 70-80% of the players are looking for another team, and when they're not getting paid, and when the future is uncertain, I'm amazed that the club isn't at the bottom of the league.

But speaking of Thor and Odin, have you seen them anywhere 'artistically' portrayed by black actors? Do you think they should be?

Again, I haven't seen the series, but just because it's released by the BBC doesn't make it "artistic." What message does it communicate? Why the retelling of a classic?

It's like reading somebody say, "we came across this two paragraph idea and turned it into a masterpiece."  Personally,  I find his statement very arrogant. And speaking of artistic, it's like taking spraying a can of red paint across the Van Gogh masterpiece "The Starry Night" and then saying "it needed a little red!"

If the Norse god were portrayed by purple or green people, it wouldn't bother me a bit. I wouldn't take this as a history lesson either. If I cared enough, I'd read some reliable sources on Norse mythology and history.

I meant "artistic license" would allow the creators to veer off historical facts and established culture. It really doesn't bother me. Granted many people learn history from the movies, but is shouldn't be the responsibility of the artist to educate them.  Like any other expression, producing art isn't necessarily tasteful or ..non-arrogant.  If the BBC billed this series as a historical piece, then BBC should be criticized.

Please don't spray-paint the original Starry Night. But if you're so inclined to spray paint a ..copy, I may even buy it from you!:artist:

  16. There are too many people who have worked for Trump in his campaign and later the White House who have said he's childish, ignorant, probably mentally unstable, and generally not qualified to be president. Of course, his defenders would say it's politics, but look how many people in very high positions have left after very brief time. Apparently he likes to fire people when his policies or ideas don't pan out. But let's not forget that he hired those "incompetent and mean" people to begin with.

DJT: .. Actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. Crooked Hillary Clinton also played these cards very hard and, as everyone knows, went down in flames. I went from VERY successful businessman, to top T.V. Star... I think that would qualify as not smart, but genius....and a very stable genius at that!

Like, nothing screams stable when you tweet in the middle of the night about "sloppy Joe," "little Marco," "lyin' Ted" and all the other childish insults...

This is how children drink water (2 hands) President-Trump-Touts-Foreign-Policy-Acc

The person who said would "drain the swamp" and hire the best, most terrific people!

  17. I'm all for "bare arms".....  in warmer climate of course, because these days, your arms would fall off in the frigid temperatures we're having in the northeast.

Yeah, I find it amazing that there are so many people following the NRA, Alex Jones, etc. The conspiracy is not that the gov wants to take guns away but how the gun manufacturers and their political allies have managed to convince so many Americans that guns equal freedom.

  18. First, George Orwell is one of my favorite authors. But, I would take issue with that statement. What does "Own understanding" mean? Should such statement stand if people's understanding of their own history is based on myth?*  In the beginning, various groups and tribes felt "chosen" by God(s), and their "history" was based on this understanding.

Secondly, what kind of destruction are we talking here when myths eventually are replaced by scientific facts? Many advanced societies have given up believing their ancient history. I don't think the Norse today are destroyed because they don't believe in Thor and Odin.

Lastly, when it comes to artistic license, I don't think we have to stick to tradition, or history. Of course, this should not be presented as history or a documentary.

I'm trying to advocate for such artistic freedom here. I'm tired of being told that myth (something without any scientific or scholarly evidence to back a story telling) should be fed to us as history. We just ended a holiday season seeped in such myth.

    Happy new year** to all.

    * I hear that there are some ..Macedonians who believe Alexander was a Slav. hmmm

**when the new year starts is another arbitrary notion; it would make more sense if it was on the solstice or equinox :christmas-204348::band:just sayin'....

  19. Though I wouldn't call this a documentary, but BBC has a new series, Troy: Fall of a City

I was reading some Greek news sites and saw that many people expressed their outrage because  Zeus, Achilles and Patroclus are portrayed by  black actors.  I don't have a problem with this, and I don't think it makes a difference to tell a story about events 2,000 4,000 years in the past. What do you think?

EDIT: Correction.... it wasn't 2,000 years ago the Trojan war happened. Homer is believed that he wrote the Iliad about 8th century BCE and he may have been writing about something that happened in the 13th c. BCE. So, the story of that war could be 3,300+ years ago.
