Beyond Transfers

Athinaios made excellent points in the "transfers thread"

Team improvement don't come from transfers alone.

To recruit good players, and to enjoy good games once again we need:

1 - Strong league with few teams, where player talent will not get diluted, and every game will be a derby. 10 to 12 teams max, should be carefully balanced around the different towns of Greece to establish the local fan base and to foster strong rivalries. One team per town (maybe Athens area with two - Pao + Aek, Olympiakos, Xanthi, Paok, Iraklis, Giannena, Larissa, kana dyo apo Pelopponhso, Ofi kai Ergotelis). Liquidate the rest and let their best players land a job elsewhere. Turn their stadiums into parks for everyone (I am sure all of their 45 fans will be upset, but it's a small price to pay).

2 - Trustworthy administration of the league, with strict rules, and criteria for selecting referees. The league administration resembles more a mob organization or a political party than a football federation that cares about advancing its product.

3 - Modern stadiums. Every team must have a modern stadium with all the amenities and luxuries for the fans.

4 - Healthy PAEs. The government must enforce the rules and stop subsidizing football teams. If the government wants to spend taxpayer's money somewhere, build orphanages, hospitals, hospices, schools, daycare stations, roads. Heck, give the subsidies to fishermen and farmers who loose their crops.

5 - Football schools. Every team should maintain academies like PAO's academy (count the good players around the league, abroad, and the national team, that were fostered by the Panathinaikos academy - don't only look at the ones who make our team, and you will see the value).

6 - Education for the fans. How many have read the rule book? I am amazed at the errors made by the experts on Athlitiki Kyriaki who analyze the plays. Heck, I come to believe the referees themselves have not read the rule book, they just go on "gut instinct" most of the time. Talk to the fans about the fine points of the game, about strategy, about technique and allow them to appreciate the game more.

6 - Coaches who know a think or two about football. Coaches who keep educating themselves. Greece needs to create a coaching school. Let coaches work long term.

7 - Quality players from abroad. The influx of questionable talent in the last five years has hurt the league.

Unless improvements are made in these areas, transfers alone will not save us. They might give us a title or two but who cares. I want to see good games.

Now if we could buy Ronaldinhio...

Id have to say that one is the most realistic out of the lot for the time been. Greece is lagging behind Europe in light years as we dont even have our own Coaching School!!!!!!!!!! This is something we do otherwise coaches will come and go just like singers do in greece.
