There is not just one problem with this team, There are several issues so just changing coaches will not fix our problem, it starts from the top down with the Epo who need to care more and put someone in charge that is not corrupt and that truly cares about the NT and has a plan to develop younger players. Then of course there is picking the right coach that understands the personalities of this team and has a good football mind and chooses the right players to fit with in a good football system that can make the team successful. The players I find have been getting a free pass, Their mindset and attitude and care factor has gone to s%$#!, They don’t play as a team and they don’t seem to give the efforts they give for there club teams. We need guys to obviously play there natural position plus we need to add guys with speed on the wings. We also need to find a mid fielding duo that can be consistent and control the game as this is a huge problem for us.. I don’t expect this new coach to come in and wave his magic wand and all off a sudden the team is going to start winning and playing good football, these Euros are done we need to start focusing on rebuilding the NT and stop with these bandaid solutions of just changing coaches and think this will fix the NT as there are deeper problems..

I have to agree with everything you said. I also believe what you said is fact. Too many players are getting a free pass. Samaris is a good example. He has played terribly and most of the time has been a passenger. I don’t know if it’s mindset or if he is limited. I think it’s both. More so mindset. He should’ve been replaced by now. Bouchalakis has to prove his worth now.

I was hoping to get a real decent coach and start the rebuilding the right way. We need to include talented youngsters otherwise we will have problems. We haven’t been successful with the current group. I truly believe if a player is having a horrible game then he should be replaced. Sokratis and Manolas are included. Although they are our main players they shouldn’t be getting preferential treatment. Give Mavropanos a chance. Have a look at Androutsos for CM. We need to understand which players are cut out for the international level. If something is broken fix it. I don’t think Samaris and Zeca should be our main midfielders. I don’t think anyone should have a fixed position.

We also call up players who aren’t good enough. We also ignore players with great attributes. Club form must play a role in selections. But a coach must also go beyond at look at other certain players who can help the team. Fetfatzidis has done way better than Bakasetas for the national team. Kourbelis is maturing and improving by the year, it has to be his time to be the starter now. Also a player dosent have to be playing every single game to be selected. Bakasetas could be playing every week, but that doesn’t mean he is good enough for Greece.

Androutsos hasn’t played much for Olympiakos but I believe he can offer something for Greece at CM. He might not be the answer or he might be, but it’s worth trying. We need to find the right players and combinations that suit the team. It’s the coaches job to analyse and asses each players abilities and capabilities in my opinion.

  2. In my opinion the big part of the problem is player selections. Anastasiadis did bizarre things. But we need to find out the right combinations for the team. To me Bouchalakis and Kourbelis did well together in the middle and complimented each other.

  3. I also think it’s wrong to replace coaches after 3 or 4 games. Give them until the end of the qualifying matches to judge them. The goal should be to qualify for tournaments. If that dosent happen you can then replace the coach. Anastasiadis for all the wrong doing he did should have been given a chance until the end. Skibbe failed at the last second. Should have been replaced right there and then.

We don’t know what could happen later on. Rehaggel lost his first game against Finaland 5-1 I think. Then few years later won a Euro. Difference between all these coaches is that Rehaggel is of better quality then Skibbe and so on. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot. This new guy dosent bring much optimism but I’m willing to see what he does first then judge.

Albanis from AEK and some of the PAO youngsters (look at their goal today) would make our team 10 more mobile, skillful, faster and determined. Have some of the current guys for mongrel in the middle but really think we need to start going down this path soon instead of watching retarded football

Very true man. I’ve been wanting these players to be involved by now. I think it’s their time now. They are players who can play ball.

  5. Realistically I think talent wise we are a top 20 team, 30 max. Our results haven’t shown our true abilities. Some are not that talented like Bakasetas but we have good enough players to be at tournaments. I truly think we lack a proper attacking 8 in the middle and a real solid deep playmaker. We’ve got pit bulls and hard tacklers in midfield but we need someone smarter and better with the ball in the middle.

We also need a better number 10 I think also. When Fortounis is out we need someone better or equal. Pelkas can be better but that only depends on time. Androutsos or Bouchalakis can fill the 8 role for now as we have no one better but we will probably see Zeca instead. We need a smart thinker and ball player at number 8 for the attack. Some one also to work better with the 10 which should be Pelkas for now. We only have Androutsos or Bouchalakis for that 8 role in my opinion.

Everywhere else we are fine at in my opinion. We could use a new up and coming solid player for RB. Also some competition at ST. Hopefully Koulouris and Kampetsis are on fire this season.

  6. We don’t really deserve to be this low. Our players are not that bad. The problem is we are not creative and dont support each other enough. We could be worse in my opinion if we were without Sokratis, Manolas and Fortounis.

Mantalos, Pelkas, Kourbelis, Bouchalakis, Koutris and some others are either not consistent or not giving enough. Siopis and Masouras did well in my opinion but it is not enough. Siopis energy helps us and Masouras determination helps us. But still that isn’t going to help if you don’t have proper structure and game plan and that’s where the coach comes in.

Samaris in my opinion should not get anymore chances. I’ve had enough of him. We are relying on him to do more than what he knows. We can’t expect him to dribble pass players and shoot from distance or give the ball on the plate for our striker. He isn’t that good to be doing that. He hasn’t got the energy either. In my opinion Bouchalakis would be better for this. Better on the ball and can support the attack better. He isn’t the answer you our problems but a slight improvement. Give him a run for the next few games. Zeca can stay. We’ve seen Samaris for 4 years now and we haven’t gone anywhere in fact we are worse.

Our defence is not what it used to be. Sokratis is still needed. But he has to do better as well. Manolas aswell. I think our players lack the toughness to win and get the job done. We had alpha males like Karagounis, Salpingidis, Katsouranis, Torosidis, Dellas, Kapsis, Charisteas and so on who got good experience abroad but also relied on their toughness to get the job done.

Players today have talent in my opinion. They don’t have the mental toughness to get over the line. They don’t take the game by the balls they do what they can to get by instead of going the extra mile. The way the national team is constructed is a joke. The EPO are a joke. The facilities are not good enough. They never were. We were lucky to have coaches like Rehaggel and Santos. They knew our limitations and what needed to be done to win. These days the game has been taken to a new level and is tactically advanced. We need more than an organised defence and gritty play. We need creativity and speed. We need players who can hold the ball and play balls through the gaps.

We haven’t adapted. We need a coach to slowly build us to play great attacking football. Start by organising the back then organise the midfield and so on. A good coach should organise the team better and know who to play in attack. The players in the middle are the one that will get organised moving forward.

I don’t know what the actual answer is for this team but if we can implentment more toughness and bravery to our players than we will get somewhere.

Also to add we have the talent to beat teams like Armenia, Estonia etc. We can even hold our own against teams level with us in talent like Bosnia for example. We can also give a good fight to teams better than us such as Belgium.

Hey Dean, that's a tough question. I think the new coach has to keep some of the veterans on the team to help stabilize the team so Torosidis should be there to help on the pitch and in the dressing room.

On the back end we have solid players in Manolas and Sokratis. Siovas is good and if Retsos can stay healthy he will be a huge asset along with the emerging Koutris.

In midfield we have an electric player in Fortounis who will keep growing and improving. Zeca is a work horse and I love his attitude. I would keep Kourbelis in there. As for Samaris he is slipping he should be far more effective but in the last two qualifiers and the friendly vs turkey he was one of our worst players. Maybe the new coach gives Tachtsidis another shot?  I thought early on he would be more of an asset for us?  He had that great showing vs Hungary in 2016 euro qualifying match and had a solid showing at Belgium were he eventually and unfortunately got sent off.

Up front I would go with Koulouris I think he will start scoring for us if given the chance. Mitroglou is also a proven scorer and usually takes his chances as we have seen over the years. Bakasetas should never be selected. He has shown very little in his 30+ appearances with the NT.

In the end the EPO have to pick a coach who can get the best out of our players. The last coach that was able to do that was Santos and in the 5 years since he has left our results have been horrible except for getting to the playoff of the World Cup were Croatia were too much for us.

Great reply. It makes sense what your saying. I think we need players who are in there mid 20s for example Kourbelis, Pelkas etc, to step up and improve as we need them to lead the new generation. We have no else to rely on. Ninis and Fetfatzidis can definitely help but as I said before I don’t see them wearing the jersey again. It’s as simple as that we need Bouchalakis, Kourbelis, Pelkas, Mantalos and so on to step up.

Fetfa and Ninis had the vision and skill for the attacking side of the game now Fortounis is the guy but he needs help around him.

I'm still pissed at how Holebas left the NT he could have helped us even going into this campaign.

As for Samaris I never thought he would be in such decline at this stage of his career I don't think he should be starting anymore.

I’m just curious to know what do you think should happen with the team? If you were coach would you start an overhaul of the squad and play youth? Who would you take out and and who would you put in? Who is at fault and who isn’t. I’d like to know your take on everything. Thanks.

  9. True. We need to do better in defence and we have the players for it. I would also like to say that we are not threatening in attack. We are very lame in attack and too predictable. Fortounis tried but he himself isn’t going to be enough and also he isn’t fast enough. He is still decent but needs real support.

Fetfatzidis and Ninis at there best can help us in attack. Pelkas, Mantalos, Tachtsidis, Masouras, Kolovos, Lazaros and Mitroglou are decent but are not good enough and have proven it so far. At least Fetfatzidis and Ninis have a creative spark and can change the game from their pure brilliance and technique.

They both have lost their way through the years but we can all agree they have the skill and brains that most don’t have in this team. (Excluding Fortounis)

To sum up we are not playing the right combinations and are not playing the right players in order to be successful. We should be catering to players like Fetfatzidis, Ninis and even Holebas. Players our federation stupidly ignore and don’t support. Unfortunately I don’t see these guys playing for the Ethniki again.

Also Samaris has been given too many chances and has done nothing to help our cause. Someone who I think should be benched for a few games. I would like to see Bouchalakis and Kourbelis take the positions as the CMs. Androutsos and Galanopoulos should be in the conversation too.

Deano, Samaris and the two CB's are not who they used to be. Only international class player is Zeca, who is of origins elsewhere.

To be honest I’m tired of seeing Samaris be not effective. What exactly does he bring for us. He is just a tall guy who is slow and dosent offer much - starting to become the new Tziolis.

I think the EPO will go for a foreigner. If so I hope they give him free reign with player selections, thats a big ask though.

Can that be done that’s the question? And is it realistic for the coach to have free reign on the team?

  12. With Sokratis and Manolas at CB and Samaris and Zeca in midfield we shouldn’t be giving up goals so easily. It has to be a much deeper problem. I believe these days you need support from everyone which includes the coach to get by. It can’t be just up to the individual player to figure out how to win.

In my opinion we need to find the right combinations between our players. Whether that means having Fetfatzidis and Tachtsidis in the same 11 then so be it. If we don’t want to trust youth then this has to happen. I mention these 2 names because they are our most creative excluding Fortounis.

Our problem is we are not using our most talented players. Lykogiannis is another name being ignored. Does anyone understand that we haven’t conceded a goal with Lykogiannis in the team. These little things matter. We need a coach who can understand these small things.

Pelkas and Mantalos don’t operate well on the wing. Bakasetas isn’t good enough. Kolovos and Masouras are useful off the bench.

I even thought we did fine with Bouchalakis and Kourbelis at CM. You see,  these are combinations that help us. Torosidis can still offer something but needs to be replaced.

I don’t know but I all I can say is we should find a decent coach who can understand what I just stated. At least we would be going off on the right foot.

  13. Can someone tell me whats going to change? Regardless of any coach we get are these players good enough to be in a Euro. The EPO are as clueless as they have ever been. Look at how long it has taken them to make this decision...

With the budget they I don’t think we can get anyone decent or better than Skibbe or Anastasiadis. Hope I’m wrong.

Bayer Leverkusen player Retsos of 2 Bundesliga and Arsenal player Mavropanos could be Greece's next successful CB pairing in 2019-20.

They can be. That’s if they can get a full season without injury. Especially if they are playing for their clubs right through. Next season will be big for them, hopefully they can stay injury free and get to that next level. Same can be said for Tasos Donis.

That would exclude the presence of Kourbelis, Kolovetsios, Bouzoukis, Kyriakidis, Fetfatzidis, Siopis, Maniatis and a bunch of players but the majority of them like Kourbelis, Kolovetsios, Dioudis are wholly dispensable. Maniatis is a good defensive midfielder, but perhaps we can do without him.

I wouldn’t put Fetfatzidis and Bouzoukis in the same sentence as those names. They are in a different mould and are way better than the overly favoured Bakasetas...

It reflects very badly on people of Greek nationality that on the sporting landscape at least, that they can play like cowards especially against Italy. Its not what our ancestory was founded on. Should replace the coach and blacklist 6-8 players, including the main Centre Backs that have been making alot of noise lately, along with the Right Back and Centre Forward that didn't get picked. Time to usher in a new dawn, with initial pain during this World Cup cycle.

I honestly don’t know who we should get rid of. To me the first person should be Samaris. Reason being he has been given too many chances and isn’t trustworthy. It’s been 5 years and we’ve only won 14 games. He can be on the bench for now.

I like Masouras , I think he has something to offer. His determination and work rate is great and is needed in this team. We shouldn’t be criticising him as he still has room for improvement.

Stafylidis is not the best defender. But he can be reliable outside the box and set pieces. Shouldn’t really be our starter. I don’t fully trust him yet. Koutris has lots of speed and can whip them in well. He needs time but I believe he will be useful for us in the long term. Lykogiannis was great when given chances I don’t know why he hasn’t been given another.

I would like for Torosidis to step down but there is no one who can fill that RB spot. No one is good enough so Torosidis has to  stay.

Mantalos and Pelkas can only excel in one role. As Fortounis is our best attacking player. The areas of concern for me are at RB, ST and CM.

Id like to we add we haven’t got quality wingers. As this I believe is the reason why we are so bad in attack. I don’t know why Lamprou and Limnios haven’t been tried yet as they are true wingers. They might be young and raw but your better off trying someone who actually plays that role.

To conclude Samaris should not start anymore. Bakasetas should be out. No questions there. I would give Galanopoulos and either Lamprou/Chatzigiovannis a chance to see if they are upgrades in positions we need improving in.

    This team should be tried.

    Vlachodimos

    Retsos/Torosidis Manolas Sokratis Koutris

    Galanopoulos Kourbelis

    Chatzigiovannis Fortounis Masouras

    Donis

This team has good balance and actual wingers. Retsos can fill in at RB of need be. I’d like to see how Donis would do with actual wingers supporting him. Koutris attacking play is needed. Zeca can come off the bench. Kourbelis and Galanopoulos can do the heavy lifting as I believe they could work well together. Both seem not afraid to make runs forward too.

All this because the players  half @$$ed it against Armenia.....if you're gonna get Ouzounides you might as well keep Angelo. Ouzou is really hopeless at in game tactics and while he did ok at smaller clubs (Panionios, Xanthi) he flopped at AEK and did a very average job at PAO playing the "timio palikari" to the end.

The truth is that Angelo (and I'm not a fan of his) has been hung out to dry by the players before even getting a chance. You can say what you will about his decisions and call ups but the only real damage done to the campaign so far is the loss to Armenia and as I stated before, its entirely on the players.....the team beat Lichtenstein, drew Bosnia, lost (as expected) to Italy and lost 3 points to Armenia (THE PLAYERS FAULT) and now he's being crucified by all the press so he can get canned. Something stinks about this scenario and as much as I like Sokratis as a player, his behavior after the match makes him seem unworthy of being a captain....he could have discussed things with Angelo and the EPO before pulling the rug  out from under him. If they had won the game against Armenia (which they should have been able to do even without a coach) then no one would have said a peep....so 1 game lost with the blame squarely on the players and he's gonna get the boot....that's real nice.

If anything Sokratis said the truth and had to be said. You can’t really blame him for that. If our players are so called “good enough” then they would’ve beaten Armenia. I believe Anastasiadis should get another chance especially if EPO are thinking of signing another Greek coach to replace him. He might aswell stay. If a foreign coach comes in then we should start rebuilding and work on a long term goal. I have a feeling we will have it hard against Finland and Lichtenstein in September.

Say what you guys want , yes we are s%$#!,  yes we are all frustrated it absolutely sucks what's is going on with the NT. There is something much deeper going on. I personally don't think we will qualify as this team hasn't should me that they deserve for me to believe they will qualify. But Where I agree @Ellada2004 there is no way in hell you guys can sit and say Finland or Armenia or the Faroe Islands are better then us because that's just not true on paper we should be better then these teams and all the teams that were in the Nations league with us.. I don't think we are a top 20 team but I don't think we are a 50th place team either and we should be able to place better then the Finland's ,Armenia's, Hungary's of the world that's why this is so frustrating right now to be a Greek NT supporter.

If we can’t be beating teams worse than us on paper then you know there is a deep deep problem. I can’t wrap by head around how Samaris plays so bad for the national team. He needs to sit out for a few games. Our defence is not the same defence that won a Euro and made major tournaments. We have no striker. Mitroglou is made of glass just like most of our players. If we could get a new EPO with a proper coach and have 95% of our players available then we can be in the top 20. Retsos and Donis are our young stars coming up playing in a good league. Sokratis and Manolas are our best and most experienced defenders. Fortounis is in the form of his life. Siovas and Kourbelis are good back ups. There is something to be optimistic about.  We have Galanopoulos and Koutris coming up the ranks. Papadopoulos when healthy can be vital for us. Mavropanos gives us extra hope for our future. It’s very frustrating at the moment and my patience is becoming very thin with some of our players. Samaris has to be dropped for me. Siovas and Kourbelis should sit the bench. Pelkas also. Kolovos is better off the bench. Donis must start for us whenever available. We have to call up some youngsters. Lamprou, Limnios, Bouzoukis, Galanopoulos etc. Masouras is ok he needs to improve but there is something there. Someone said it before whoever our coach is should be calling up players based on their skill set and what they bring to the game. Also form too. Not what agent they have eg. (Bakasetas)

Evangelos Grammenos went against the majority of Greek players wishes, and appointed Anastasiadis as coach last year according to Agona sports. The coach has failed to gain the trust of the senior players in particular. How can the EPO hire a coach without the blessing of Torosidis, Sokratis, Manolas, and Fortounis, the senior core group ffs??

Why are the EPO a pure Wank fest??  Everyone invests alot of energy and emotion into this team we all support, they play like s%$#!, then we all find out what a fat turd Grammenos is because of this very reason. Ange A obviously can't coach!

Decisions made that are full of self interest and corruption. Fancy not consulting your most influential players about the next coach, then the players are expected to buy into this new regime. We all think the players are all systems go to win a match, yet little do we know till it all comes out later, that the players are unhappy and operating at 50% so they couldn't defeat Melbourne Victory currently, let alone Italy or Armenia. Not waking up at 4am for these cats again till I know the team are operating at 100%. I don't have trust in this team now cause I don't know how they feel behind the scenes, which will determine how hard they try. Fark them off for a while till they win.

I know how you feel man. I had to wake up at 4am too and see this garbage. We play like we don’t have a real plan. We need structure and discipline. Only a real can offer these things. It shouldn’t be an excuse to not play well because of EPO and there bs. We haven’t got the funds to get a real coach. We need real change and I hope it comes quick for the sake of the team and country.

  21. It depends. Galanopoulos would be good in holding possession and can press well. I would’ve paired them both in a 4-2-3-1. Samaris hasn’t performed since forever. Zeca is a work horse and you can count on him to chase all day. His passing range though isn’t good enough. I’m not sure if it’s the system or the players. Most likely the players.

Bouzoukis is great. Can pass really well and works very hard as you said. He has got a bit of Modric style of play. He isn’t very fast but good enough. He had good and power in his shots. I would like to see him work with Fortounis and see how they combine.

I would take him and as a SM Hellas fan I would welcome it.

What we need is someone that can step into the fold and bring a semblance of stability to the friggin squad. Someone that can get the best from the players. Identify the best Greek players, by skill and speed for each position. I’m sure half the people on this forum can do that. Decide on a formation, give the inexperienced players roles and only play the ones that are ready. A good coach would know who can and who can’t. We need to find 2 players one on the left and one on the right of Fortounis that can play with him. Not Bakasetas, not Pelkas and not Masouras. Pelkas is a backup and Masouras a sub for now. It’s time to look at L. Lamprou, Limnios.

Masouras has shown glimpses but lacks a clear head. E.g. shoots when he should pass and passes when he should shoot. This isn’t good for a forward. He also shuts his eyes when going for headers and the ball hits his shoulders or he misses it completely. He needs to work on his deficiencies otherwise he won’t succeed at international level or at Oly.

We need to sort out the midfield and our DM has to play as a DM. This position is killing us. If Samaris, Zeca or Kourbelis cannot, then bring in someone that can. When Soc started he was a DM.

DM is the link between defence and attack, it’s a role that requires speed and concentration. It’s the role that thwarts the opposition attacking play. It is ideally suited to a mentally tough, intelligent and fit player. Not half injured, lazy and clueless players. This player must work closely with the coach and vise-versa. A good coach must have a good understanding of what he wants from the DM. He must be trusted. Anything less is unacceptable.

Think about the last game and who was marking Mkhartarian. No one.

Gekas wasn’t playing but was getting called up. I remember we beat Latvia 5-2 and he was not playing for 6mths and scored 3. You can call up some players like this that are proven as long as they are fit. In our case we need to do this where there are no other options. Some players you call up because they are the best you got. Mitroglou and Torosidis should have been called. Mitroglou was not injured just not playing enough. They are 30 and 32 respectively and are not yet finished. Nor is Soc. We need these guys as they give us experience and stability. It doesn’t matter Mitroglou doesn’t touch the ball. He is better than anything else we got for now and commands respect on the field. Koulouris is ok but inexperienced. He is young and can be used as a sub for now. If Mitroglou injured then Koulouris is next best option. Donis is perfect on the right or as the 2nd forward in a 4 4 2 formation. Any half brain coach would understand this.

    Just my thoughts

Very interesting. I don’t think Samaris can be trusted anymore at DM. Kourbelis I think is better. Zeca needs to be running and harassing players. Depending on the formation we should give Bouchalakis more chances than Samaris. He’s got more to offer especially in shooting.

The problem with Greece is that they don’t want to build on what was good. Eg. Euro2004. We should’ve built on it. Any coach we get now is pointless. Especially considering the options. If I had to choose, Ange.P would be my choice. I just feel he would do a great job and I believe he is better than Anastasiadis.
