Just watched highlights of the win vs Turkey in Euro 2008 qualifiers. Samaras cuts a beautiful pass through the Turkish defence to Amanatidis who finishes the goal and Greece qualifies with the win. He was a big game player.

Top-5 ever non-tournament moment for Greece. Turkey had just embarrassed us 4-1 at Karaiskakis on 25 Martiou. We, as a nation, needed to respond, and that response came in Istanbul. With the 1-0 win, we topped the group and automatically qualified for Euro 2008.

  2. I really expected them to give him the next two games to save his job. This comes as a surprise to me. I am very happy to see EPO finally show that they mean business. Skibbe needed to go; not just because of the results, but even more so for the way the team looked on the pitch.

To the people saying that we will never have a player like Messi, Mbappe, etc.. well why not? Look at Croatia, tiny nation yet producing footballers like Modric. Is it because Greeks are genetically inferior athletes? I think not. Football culture in Greece is both defeatist and not conducive to developing those types of players. A change in culture, brought forward by a national academy and proper coaching staff would be able to do great things. If you want to look on a smaller scale, heck look at Iceland! They got to Euro 2016 and WC 2018 because of proper footballing infrastructure developing their youth players.

Those are special generational players. Countries like France, Spain, Brazil, etc consistently produce world class players and out of those world class players come a handful of special ones like Ronaldo, Messi, Mbappe, Neymar, etc. The reason why is that their country's sports culture, clubs, academies are so refined that they produce a high number of quality footballers. It has little to do with genetics. Greece has somewhat the culture, but the clubs and academies are nowhere near par.

Definitely, he was involved in so many big games for the NT after our Euro triumph.

Samaras moments that will live forever:

Assist to Amanatidis winning goal vs Turkey in revenge match to win the group and qualify for Euro 2008

Winning goal vs Croatia in Euro 2012 qualifier to win the group

Goal vs Germany in Euro 2012 quarter finals

Winning goal from the spot in stoppage time vs Ivory Coast in World Cup 2014 to send Greece to round of 16

Setting up Salpingidis goal in second leg of World Cup 2010 playoff vs Ukraine to qualify for the final tournament. (Thanks Alphonse)

Lets be real a new coach will not automatically mean we are back to winning and back to 10th in the world.. Not by far this team will be a work in progress but at least a new coach will but the best players that we have and give us at the very least our best chance to succeed.. As long as we stay with this coach we will never progress he is the worst of all the coaches we have had.. Lets not forget we went through 3 other coaches that couldn't fix this team..

At this point, we are hopeless. A new coach will at least bring some hope.

  6. The worst part is that they were better than us individually and as a team, and tactically, and mentally. Skibbe is bad and many of our players are bad. This team has no idea how to play together which really exposes the players' flaws and creates more unforced errors in these last two matches than I have ever seen with any team in any league. They get beat to the ball and really have no answer to subpar opposition with players from unknown leagues.
