Turkish Super League Post-Season Comments

Recommended Posts

It's been a very strange season all the way in Turkey. There were joyful moments, bitter disappointments and shocking events throughout the season.

Reigning champions Besiktas stormed the first-half of the season and they quickly built up a good lead over Galatasaray and Fenerbahce by around the tenth matchday, mainly thanks to those two sides' drops to lower-ranked clubs.

Galatasaray's fall around the end of the first half of the season meant that Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor would have to battle it out for the second spot, in other words the second berth for the Champions' League.

Besiktas led Fenerbahce by eight points in mid-season and Trabzonspor were a further one point back. Galatasaray were disappointingly fifth, behind the shocking Denizlispor.

But strange things started stirrung up in mid-season break. Besiktas' mid-season camp was disrupted with rain and gale in Antalya. They also sold their clinical forward Mansiz to Vissel Kobe FC.

Meantime, Fenerbahce brought in Marcio Ferreira Nobre from Cruzeiro to fire up their cylinders up front.

With the start of the second half of the season, Besiktas started to lose ground. They were losing 1-4 to Samsunspor, when their fifth player got the red and they were disciplined to a 0-4 legal defeat. Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor both caught winning streaks to close the gap on Besiktas and with a controversial derby win over Gala on matchday 24, Fenerbahce grabbed the pole position as Besiktas slumped to an impressive Trabzonspor, 3-0 in the same matchday.

Nobre made an immediate impact, scoring nine goals in eight appearances and van Hooijdonk always stepped up to help his team cruise when they needed him.

After matchday 25, Fenerbahce never lost the lead and it was Trabzonspor who pounced on the second spot after the dramatic fall of Besiktas continued. Fenerbahce ended the season with 76 points, 4 ahead of Trabzonspor and 14 ahead of third-placed Besiktas. Galatasaray had a woeful season in sixth and they will not be in Europe next season.

Bursaspor were relegated to Second Division Category B, after a four-way battle kept Sebatspor, Rizespor and Istanbulspor in the Super League. It will be the first season of Bursaspor next year in the Second Division, after 38 years of top flight.

Adanaspor and Elazigspor also dropped down and these three teams will be replaced by Sakaryaspor, Ankaraspor and Erciyesspor next season.
