A little more realistic analysis from Tsanas than yesterday. "We should have a base and have players that have a strong personality", he said, and added, "We will qualify for the Mundial if we have the elements that launched us in the past." He is right: "The manager to come should understand our players' style." He mentions again, however, that Greece (ranked 44th) managed to held the World Rank No. 7. Romania at bay, and thinks nobody questioned Ranieris decision to call up Mantalos and Diamantakos.

why does this mandalos myth of keeping others on the bench still smell?
- mr ninis & mr fetfa were not available for the match that mandalos played in.
- mr maniatis was injured and out. kone had just signed with udinese, a little over a week earlier and was woefully unfit - as was samaras, who played. we were very limited at CM & FWD for that match. we were also severely hurting at FB.
There were injured players but that doesnt explain however why was Mantalos played as a starter. Kone after a week with a club would have been better. Tziolis - a player much more useful than Mantalos - could have played too but he was overlooked by the big name clown.

To be successful you need to evolve Mendel... Yes we experienced great success in 2004 with a defensive system but we attacked with great flow and we made our attacks effective with goals...
We then had the privilege of our ranking been what it has been until this campaign about 9-14 in the world - from 2008-2014 we had the luxury of the defensive scheme working good enough to beat the Lithuania's, Latvia's, Slovakia's with 1-0 scorelines and IMO much luck. Heck we even owned Croatia for the 2012 Euro's but had some warning signs against Bosnia last campaign... Even before that Switzerland beat us twice in 2010 WC qualifying...
How long did you think the lucky 1-0 wins over moderate opposition was gona work for? Mainly long balls and set pieces... today our set pieces are a joke, a shadow of what they once mean and our attack has no flow what so ever.
Kara and Kats cans simply not be around for ever and were part of the reason our game looked how it did but we had Salpi + Gekas to score some much needed goals with Mitroglou.
Versus Croatia Karagounis was only 34, Katsouranis 32. In 2013 vs Bosnia they were two years older, over 30 two extra years can mean a lot, several players retire before 36 or even 34. I think that explains the declining performance, they were getting older and older. There was in 2013 a game versus Liechtenstein which was horrible (though we won). Santos had no better midfielders, that why Katsouranis played as a starter until he was 35 and Tachtsidis and the likes were mostly benched (under Santos Tachtsidis and until the WC Samaris were behind Tziolis in the hierarchy - that means theyre not good).
I think we could have beaten Finland and the Faroe Islands 1-0 with long balls and 2 DMs, perhaps Hungary or Northern Ireland too. We could have had many problems because of the transition and the lower quality of the younger midfielders, but in that system we should have been to qualify. Norway and Albania (!) will earn probably a playoff spot.
The last sentence is true. Unfortunately there is no successor of Karagounis or Katsouranis, this is partly the reason the team plays how it plays.

They suck do they?
Our best game was Fetfa starting, Holebas was one of our better players vs Finland and no other Greek midfielder today is passing and setting up goals better then Ninis.
Holebas seemed really good and built attacks, but versus a stronger team than Finland we could have had problems because of him being out of position. I can imagine Tsanas will be surprised vs Romania.
Fetfatzidis is inconsistent, sometimes he was good as vs Hungary, but he had some mediocre matches too. I dont mention Ninis (ofc hes better than Fountas & Co., but that isnt much).
-
How development is taught in Greece must be looked at. Our players are very "mechanical" with very little technique. As Reaper has pointed out there is far and few players with natural ability to even have great first control and good vision to create a flowing game and what is sad is that even the Faroe Islands, Northren Ireland & now Finland have scored winning goals on us because they attacked us at speed with quick passes and deadly finishing... Something we have not been able to do in all these games against that opposition!!
The teams you mention won against us as Greece used to won. ~ 40-45% of the possession, defense, counterattacks. Sounds stupid, but yesterday in a sense Finland was Ethniki.

Stability I think. And he is among the better midfielders we have. He isnt an excellent DM, at international level max a useful player, but who should we call up as a midfielder, Pogba?
-
1. I would say (as for the keepers and defenders, those who was called up now are OK):
Midfielders: Maniatis, Tziolis, Kone, Fortounis, Petsos (?), K. Papadopoulos as a DM, Samaris & Tachtsidis (for the moment as a squad player). At a pinch even Makos, just not Klonaridis, Kolovos and the likes.
Attackers: Mitroglou, Samaras (only if he has a club), Salpingidis (?, only if he has a club), Fetfatzidis (as a squad player). Christodoulopoulos? Perhaps Karelis? More question marks.
2. At the Euro none of them played as a centre back, Dellas and Kapsis were the centre backs.

Yes build it and they will come! We know what it takes to win....Lets follow the formula of 2004, and get rid of the cancer players we currently have!
Katsouranis said the same thing a few days ago. If the appropriate formula is known, why should not we use it?
-
I hope everybody sees (except perhaps aek66 and the likes) that Fetfatzidis, Samaris, Tachtsidis, Karelis, Aravidis, Fountas, Kolovos etc. are s%$#! and for the moment most of them shouldnt called up. Perhaps later they will be able to play a certain role in a defensive match strategy, but even that isnt certain. Even players like Avraam Papadopoulos, Spyropoulos or Patsazoglou were much more useful than they and contributed more.
-
- your first sentence is incorrect. what scheme do you believe was otto's bread and butter up until late 2006?
when you have dellas/kapsis/kats/basinas as CBs, fyssas & seitaridis as FBS/WBs and a trio in the CM of karagounis/zagorakis and either kats/basinas? hmmmm...looks like a 5-3...and then add charisteas & vryzas? maybe a 5-3-2. where you watching football or reading tipa mola back then?
Did Katsouranis or Basinas or both of them play a centre back in 2004? So much for your competence.

Guy's I give you all full Mark's for support, but there comes a time of excepting the facts....The NT is not a place for player development, that happens at club level where these players spend most of there time. The majority of this team is made up of losers, that's what happens when accountability doesn't exist, something Santos and the 2004 had....Now show up put on the shirt and play tiki taka....Try to lol! Karelis can't dominate in the SL, same goes for Aravidis, Fetfa bench boy, Fortounis has been playing for 5 years and still can't be the projected super star....Now we're talking lets try Mantolas, who's he to take a international role, Samaris and Mitro....Guy's I can pick this garbage team apart day and night....Lets leave this alone.....I told you guys this 2 year's ago...BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR IN LIFE!!! Please bring Santos back!!!
If only we can... He has a good job, makes great work in Portugal I bet he will be there until 2018 WC (at least).
-
We should establish a good defense to remain competitive at all (2 DMs, defensive overall strategy). All the other things should come after that.
-
Tsanas was sad because of the loss, but spoke about positive signs and said: "We have lost, but we can be optimistic."

We should prompt find a competent trainer.

how the hell are there posters on this board that WANT those 2 to start?
these people exist ...they are present ..... here ..... now !!!!
After such a debacle there are posters who try to find excuses for the young & useless tits and to blame Tziolis and Vyntra for everything. *facepalm*
Vyntra was a necessary choice because of Torosidis' absence. In defense he hadnt much work, he tried to go forward and create chances as Torosidis does but he isnt so strong at that. Both of them were average, and clearly they didnt were the worst in the team.
Hint: It was totally useless to start (or call up) Aravidis, a second Mantalos choice. Karelis shot for all directions, it was hilarious. I didnt understand why Fountas was subbed in instead of Fetfatzidis. Tsanas is totally incompetent (that could be said after the Serbia match too) and should be replaced... perhaps EPO can select a proper head coach at the third attempt after Ranieri and Markarian.

Why do you think Santos left when he did? Once he saw that Kara and co. were finished, he knew it was time to call it quits. He took a look at the mykonos generation coming through and ran the opposite direction.
Kats was still available. So was Tziolis and Maniatis. I was very disappointed when Santos left.
-
- tziolis was better than vyntra in the beginning. he looked like he was wearing a weight jacket adding 5lbs every 5 minutes as the game went on. i blame the goal on him
That is suprising...
-
Come back George Samaras, we didn't mean it. Bring Maniati with you. We are all friends again! Hellas wouldn't be any worse at rugby I suppose.
Maniatis was injured.
-
Fetfatzidis is easily the most effective attacking player Greece has and has outscored all the others in your sorry list of zombaic players. Tsanas did not use him tonight for reasons only the EPO can answer - if they were held at gunpoint of course - just asking them they would lie.
Perhaps because this was Fountas' twentieth birthday. :\
-
Kone did well when he came on, was prob the only guy whom looked like he could do anything.
Fortounis had a good 1st half but didn't really notice him much in the 2nd.
Aravidis & Karelis were massively tragic, how Karelis saw so many minutes is just laughable
Nearly won a penalty for us at the end. As versus Romania, he looked better than the other midfielders but he was only subbed in after an hour or so, for some reason.
-
That between 2004 and 2014 was our Golden Generation under our best head coaches (Rehhagel, Santos) ever.

Guys, we've been through 3 coaches this tournament and none of them have brought us any success. I think it has more to do with the players at this point.
The young scumbags (Tachtsidis, Karelis, Lazaros, Fetfatzidis, Samaris etc.) are s%$#!. Some here wanted these players to play since 2011 instead of Karagounis and Katsouranis. Some good defenders we have, attacking midfielders and attackers stink.
-
To think we had a chance to rebuild for a WC campaign and we produce that...
- Could not get a decent shot on goal
- Cant score in Greece
- Beaten again by a team ranked +90 in the world
- The most ridiculous plays
- Vyntra turn overs and hospital passes
- One man upfront surrounded by 3 defenders all the time
- no Greek player able to play with any flow but maybe Fortounis
- stupid passing options 4 out of 5 times
- caught on the counter attack time and time again
- committing into tackles at critical times (like the goal Fin scored)
- no heart
- no communication in attack
- shots of amateur standard
- Useless set pieces - one after another
- we sub a DM for a DM at 0-1 with 8 mins to go...
- NO X FACTOR what so ever
- touches worse then Sunday league football
We really really suck!
Kone was perhaps some good in attack. Fortounis too. Aravidis, Karelis were horrible.
-
Tsanas is an incompetent s%$#!. Aravidis starts, Fountas in place of Karelis. Kone looked a bit better than the other attackers. Why wasnt he put in the starting XI?

A very good article: Fernando Santos, we miss you. "Santos' four principles for victory: organization, concentration, passion and trust." There is a total lack of these at the Ethniki now.
