  1. In men's pole vault, USA's Sam Kendricks (who is one of the favorites to win gold) will be out after tested positive for COVID-19. Also, Russia's Timur Morgunov (won silver in the 2018 European Championship) is out after he was not selected as one of 10 Russian athletes to take part as ANA. This could give Karalis little hope of qualifying for the finals.
  2. Korakaki will have another qualifying round to complete, next one is the rapid fire. She is currently in 2nd. Top 8 advances to the finals. Psarra eliminated by Lin 6-4, started off well in the two sets, stumbled in the last three. Greece defeats Japan 10-9 in men's water polo, it was close. The mixed Greek swimming team in the 4x100 did not qualify, finished 11th overall. Kokkalanis and Divari both were eliminated from their respective sailing events and will not compete in the medal round. Kalachaliou is currently 9th in the Laser Radial race and has 2 races left, she got to produce a good showing in order to compete in the medal round. Sakkari/Tsitsipas lost to Australia's Barty/Peers 4-6, 6-4, (6-10). In rowing, a disappointing finish for the Greek women's pair as they finished 5th. Maria's older sister Annette Kyridou failed to qualify for the medal round in the women's single sculls Douskos won his race in the semifinals and will be contesting for a medal later today.
  3. Korakaki will be performing in the 25m pistol qualification precision which I am expecting her to go to the finals. This shooting event she does better than the 10m air pistol. Psarra is facing Lin of Taiwan in the round of 32 women's individual archery. Lots of sailing action during the morning session. Greece face host nation Japan in the men's polo water. In swimming, the mixed 4x100 team will perform around 06:27 Tokyo time to try to qualify for the finals. In that group, Theodora Drakou is from Patras, where I was born. Iakovidis lifts on Saturday in the 96 kg class.

  5. Kristian Gkolomeev is our only Greek swimmer left who has a good shot at a medal, he has the 4th fastest time in the 50m freestyle coming into the Tokyo Olympics at 21.45.
  6. Tsitspas eliminated from Humbert of France 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 2-6 Teltsidou eliminated from Scoccimarro of Germany Both Papastamos (35th) and Vazaios (27th) did not qualify for the semifinals in the men's 200m individual medley swimming On the positive side, Tsitsipas and Sakkari advance into the quarterfinals beating Canadian duo Dabrowski/Auger-Aliassime 6-3, 6-4 in the mixed doubles. For sailing, if any Greeks are eligible for the medal rounds, it will take place this weekend. I will get the full detail by then.
  7. Teltsidou lost to Tamiazova 10-0 on Ippon She will be heading into the repechage round and must win to advance into the additional bronze medals games.
  8. Wow! Maria Kyridou & Christina Bourmpou just broke the World Best Time in the semifinals of 6:48.70 to qualify first place in style! Big bravo to the young girls from Thessaloniki!!!
  9. Svitolina was the better player, Sakkari could not handle her power serves and returns. At least Sakkari did what Danilidou couldn't do and that is reaching the round of 16 at the Olympic Games. Greece and Italy fought out a 6-6 draw in men's water polo.
  10. Tsitsipas got his revenge and eliminated Tiafoe 6-3, 6-4 to advance into the third round (best of 16). Gionis suffered a meltdown in the 5th set, up 10-4 (3-1 in sets) only needed a point to win the match and lost out on deuce 12-10 to force a 6th set where Jeoung of South Korea finished him off in the final two sets (6-11, 12-14) to advance into the round of 16. This one stings.
  11. Greece's real first chance of a medal could be from Vasileia Karachaliou from women's sailing (Laser Radial) or Stefanos Douskos from men's rowing (Single Sculls).
  12. Tropical storm Nepartak is expecting to strike well north of Tokyo that could impact all water sports events. It is not forecasting to be a Typhoon.
  13. Results from yesterday: Polychronis Tzortzakis finished 63rd in the men's road race at 6:16:53. Eleftherios Petrounias qualifies for the finals in the men's rings with 15.333 points. Panagiotis Gionis defeats Serbia's Peto 4-0 to advance into the second round of men's table tennis to face Saleh of Egypt. Maria Sakkari defeats Estonia's Kontaveit 7-5, 6-2 in women's singles tennis to advance into the second round to face Serbia's Stojanovic. Christina Bourbou & Maria Kyridou have finished 5th in the rowing women's pair heat to advance into repechage and must finish top three from that round to advance into the semifinals A/B. In Men's swimming, Apostolos Papastamos finished 14th in the 400m individual medley with 4:12.50 and failed to advanced to the finals. In women's swimming, Anna Ntountounaki finished 13th in the 100m butterfly with 57.75 to advance into the semifinals.
  14. On Sat, 24 July, Polychronis Tzortzakis will be in the Men's Road Race (Cycling) at 11:00

  16. Last night Giannis Antetokounmpo and his Milwaukee Bucks won the NBA championship in 6 games over the Phoenix Suns. As expected, he was picked the NBA Finals MVP. First title for the franchise in 50 years. All three brothers have NBA rings (Kostas with the Lakers last year). Giannis joins a big list of NBA greats to score 50 points in NBA Finals history. Congrats and you have made Greece very proud!
  17. This coming Tokyo Olympics looks to be more promising than Rio for our Greek athletes. It is possible we could see more than 6 medals (2 possibly in athletics).
  18. The under 20 European Championship was pretty rough for Greece with the exception of a few positive results Orestias Ntousakis finishing 4th in the men's hammer throw at 76.76. Polyniki Emmanouilidou reached the 100 meter women's final finishing 6th. She produced a lifetime best of 11.55 in the semifinals. Elli-Efthia Delligianni missed out on a bronze medal at the 800 meters (which she should have won because of a clear interference from the Swiss girl, but didn't get DQ in the process) produced a Greek national U20 record of 2:04.11. Vasiliki Kallimogani got a Greek national U20 record in the women's 3000 meter steeplechase with 10:31.72. Finally, Elina Tzengko brought Greece it's only medal of the competition, won gold with an impressive throw of 61.18. She was trying to break the U20 European Championship record of 61.52 held by Nikoletta Szabo of Hungary.
  19. This Houston doctor worked 267 straight days in the hospital fighting COVID, what a bravo man!
  20. Any idea who in athletics have the virus? I can't find the names.
  21. The under 23 European Championship has been a good one for Greece, with the exception of a couple of heartbreak moments where Greece could have gotten 2 additional medals. They finished with 4 medals (3 silver 1 bronze). Silver Christos Frantzeskakis - Men's hammer throw 75.23 Spyridoula Karydi - Women's triple jump 13.95 Emmanuel Karalis - Men's pole vault 5.65 Bronze Odysseas Mouzenidis - Men's shot put 19.41 Notables Dimitris Tsitsos - Men's javelin throw 78.22 personal best (just missed out on a bronze medal) Marios Anagnostou - Men's 5000 meters 14:06.94 personal best
  22. Dimitris Tsiamis has been added to the Greek athletics team which brings the total to 20.

  24. Congrats to the Czech Republic for qualifying it's first ever men's basketball Olympic Games. They fully deserve it. At least I am very happy Turkey isn't going. lol
  25. Forgive me Blackhawk, I realized you posted his name on the list.
