greek teams in europe rankings

The way i see it, the more teams u have the more u have to hope that they will all advance to cl or uefa as points are divided among all the teams in europe from the same country.

for example, if greece has 4 teams in europe, 1 in cl and 3 in uefa it only gives us more of a chance to collect more points. if we r 4 teams and a team wins a game, that teams 3 pints gets divided among the other 3 teams from the same country. thus 3 points split among 4 teams. the thing with greece is that because of pao and olym, but mostly pao, we have had 6 teams have access to europe and 3 or 4 of them not even advancing to uefa cup every year. so even if pao and olym for example collected 10 and 9 points respectively 2 years ago in the cl, it was divided amongst 6 teams. if u look at it from the other side, romania has had 3 teams in europe the past few years, and their wins are only divided amongst 3 teams which makes the average coefficient for the country much higer then greece. even though they might have won fewer games.

if the greek teams other then pao and osfp would win a few games every year , there is no way greece would have fallen as low as they did. but he way things look, it will be only 4 teams in europe for greece startin in 2008, which is sad but will allow the 3 or 4 top greek teams to win their games and divided only amongst 4 teams instead of 6, and therefore making our overall average higher. itl be back to normal in another 5 or 6 years which hopefully will allow the greek league to advance as a league and hopefully make the smaller teams a little more capable of competing in europe.

so basically the only thing that will change, even with 4 teams instead of six, is that teams like iraklis and xanthi and larisa wont be able to play in europe unless they end up in the top 4. no big losss if u ask me.

only thing that scares me is that the champion wont get a direct access to the cl. they will enter the 2nd round of waulies and have to face 2 teams to make it to the cl.

which can ALSO be good, if they win 3 or 4 games in the qualifying round.. but if we start not qualifying, itll make it a few years before we will see 2 teams in the cl again.

take this year for example. pao has 2 wins and a draw, aek has 2 wins and a draw and osfp has a draw. thats 15 points. even if we had another team to make it four teams and that team didnt win a single game, it would make 15 points divided by four teams which make it 3.86 coefficient. that would put us in 9th place instead of 19th.

therefore if things would keep up this way and we would maybe drop .5 coefficient points, we would end up in the top 12 thus giving us 2 teams in cl two years from now. but instead, seeing as its 6 teams, our coefficient rating is 2.38 which puts us in 16th right now.

its all about mathematics. thats how teams from romania and ukraine have gotten to be so high in rankings. itll happen for greece as well.

not only that, but pao is still the 29th highet ranked team in europe so even when we will be drawn in cl or uefa in the futur, we will always be in the highest group. etc. so we will always play weaker teams.

in the meantime however, we have to hope that the other teams other then the big two in greece can put together squads that can compete in europe.

yeah but no matter how many polints u get if PAO gets 15 points this year.. u have to divide that by 6

look at romania,.they have only 3 teams to divide their points and now they are 7th for 2008-2009

if they finish 7th they would also get 3 teams in the uefa

if those teams are kicked out first round like the greek teams.. whatever the 3 C.L teams do they will have to divide the points by 6

BTW great thread

nice post. why didn't you start it in the "super league" ( ) section?

pao collected a lot of points in the past while we didn't really achieve anything big, expect in 98 which was our best year so far. as you said, if other teams would have collected some more points it would look completely different.

another example would be switzerland (again) thun and basel got a few points the last years and since there were only about 3-4 teams in european competitions there points counted much more.

as i see it now, there will always be a change in between the smaller leagues. romania and similar leagues will get on or two teams more in the cl and uefa cup, but since in their leagues there are also just a few good teams, they will drop again. same as greece now.

so the most important thing for our league to keep a high rank is, that other teams like xanthi, larissa, paok, or any other team playing in europe win some points too.

but this isn't any excuse at all for osfp, aek and pao not getting points (i know, pao just got some).

and if the other teams in greece get better, also the big 3 (at the moment) will become stronger and might be able to perform better in europe.

it sounds funny but, don't you think that it would be better if both 3 top greek teams would play at uefa for a year or two? Look at Pao, they are in very bad shape but they managed to collect some points because they have very weak opponents. That could also happen to Aek and Osfp. Of course, the big money are in CL, I'm not forgetting that :D

no, this years results are directly proportionate to the 2008 season which means, unless we put up at least 4 more wins this year in europe and hope for a few breakdowns from other countries, it looks like unless pao wins the championship next season, they wont be in their new stadium in the cl but rather the uefa cup
