SPL Season 2005-06

Recommended Posts

The new season gets underway tomorrow with the following matches:

Saturday 30 July

Dundee Utd v Aberdeen

Falkirk v Inverness CT

Hibernian v Dunfermline

Kilmarnock v Hearts

Motherwell v Celtic

Sunday 31 July

Rangers v Livingston

A full stadium is expected at the New Firm (a name dating back to the 80's when both clubs regularly challenged the Old Firm) derby between Dundee United and Aberdeen. Most interest will be on Motherwell v Celtic, a repeat of the last game of last season which saw Rangers dramatically snatch the title in the closing minutes of the season. Celtic's shocking performance in Slovakia has increased attention further.

Rangers, minus Kyrgiakos of course, will be unfurl the championship flag at Ibrox against Livingston on Sunday.

Well, the ferry boats will be filling up again as N. Ireland fans cross over to support their favourite teams.

Btw, the ferry boat companies do NOT mix fans: there are Rangers boats and Celtic boats.

Our bookmakers are giving Rangers as 4/5 favourites while Celtic pay back better than evens. Needless to say, nobody bothers with any other club.

Let's hope we have a well-played championship and...Give sectarianism the boot! :)

Results of the 1st round of matches played over 30th & 31st July:

Rangers 3-0 Livingston

Dundee Uniter 1-1 Aberdeen

Falkirk 0-2 Inverness CT

Hibernian 1-1 Dunfermline

Kilmarnock 2-4 Hearts

Motherwell 4-4 Celtic

A high scoring weekend saw the season start the same way as last season ended....Rangers on top, with Celtic throwing away a lead at Motherwell.

Gordon Strachan's problems continued losing another 4 goals adding to the 5 lost midweek in Europe. Despite leading 3-1 at half time following a hat trick from Hartson, Motherwell came back to lead 4-3, before a last minute goal from substitute Beattie saved a point for Celtic.

Debut goals from Miller and Nicholson saw the points shared at Tannadice in a fairly even match between Dundee United and Aberdeen.

The old man Brewster struck 2 goals in a fine away win at newly promoted Falkirk.

Highly rated Hibernian surprisingly had to come from a goal down to draw with Dunfermline, with O'Connor on target for Hibs.

Rudolph Skacel got off to a good start, scoring Hearts first goal in a 4-2 away victory over Kilmarnock.

Peter Lovenkrands scored Rangers third goal in their home victory over Livingston but still looks set to leave Ibrox, as McLeish tries to free up some cash for a new centre back.

Aberdeen 0-0 Livingston

Celtic 2-1 Inverness CT

Dunfermline 2-1 Dundee Utd

Hearts 1-0 Rangers

Kilmarnock 1-1 Falkirk

Motherwell 1-3 Hibernian

Hearts continued their 100% league record by defeating champions Rangers 1-0 at Tynecastle. Czech striker Roman Bednar gave the Edinburgh side an early lead, and held on to win, surviving a strong penalty claim in the closing minutes. Hearts are now 11 points clear of Rangers, but suffered injuries to Bednar and Fyssas. The result equals their record of eight straight league wins set way back in 1914-15. Next week, Hearts travel to bottom club Falkirk, followed by an away trip to Parkhead to face closest challengers Celtic.

Celtic kept the pressure on Hearts with a 2-1 victory over Inverness, despite going behind in the second have. 2 goals from Craig Beattie punished Inverness, after Brewster missed a chance to put the Highland side 2 goals up.

Aberdeen 2-2 Motherwell

Dundee Utd 0-0 Kilmarnock

Livingston 0-5 Celtic

Rangers 5-1 Dunfermline

Falkirk 2-2 Hearts

Hibernian 1-2 Inverness CT

Celtic gained ground on leaders Hearts after the Edinburgh side dropped 2 points to newly promoted Falkirk. Hearts had their goalkeeper sent off in the first half, and went two goals down before captain Pressley scored two late goals to snatch a point.

Celtic and rangers both recorded easy victories, each scoring 5 times - with 10 different players on the scoresheet!

Following their exit from the UEFA Cup last week, Hibernian lost at home to Inverness, who had player manager Brewster sent off for 2 yellow cards. Brewster could be in trouble after criticising the referee saying, "I thought he was trying to send me off. The referee thought he was going to do something to Mr Brewster - it was soft."

playing celtic right?

Yes, the biggest game of the season so far - including the old firm game!

Tickets for the match sold out in 1 hour yesterday, so we are looking at a crowd in the region of 67,000.

Hearts will unfortunately be missing young Scotland keeper Craig Gordon who has been in fantastic form this season.

Celtic seem to be hitting form at the right time. Saw the highlights of their win at Livingston, and some of the play was a reminder of the attacking style Celtic are famous for. The more cautious approach of Martin O'neill was efficient and fairly successful, but not very attractive and left the fans often dissatisfied.

No change at the top after victories for the top 4 teams at the end of the first quarter of the season. The Glasgow and Edinburgh sides are now pulling further away from the pack, with a 7 point gap between 4th placed Rangers and Kilmarnock.

Celtic today held out to win 1-0 away to a spirited Kilmarnock and remain 3 points behind leaders Hearts who won 2-0 at home to struggling Dunfermline despite losing manager George Burley 2 hours before kick-off. Rangers scored their first goals for several games in a 2-0 home win over Motherwell.

A midweek programme should also see no real threat to the top 4 sides:

Dunfermline v Hibernian

Hearts v Kilmarnock

Inverness CT v Falkirk

Livingston v Rangers

Results of the 12th round of matches played on 25th & 26th October:

Aberdeen 2-0 Dundee United

Celtic 5-0 Motherwell

Dunfermline 1-2 Hibernian

Hearts 1-0 Kilmarnock

Inverness CT 0-3 Falkirk

Livingston 2-2 Rangers

The final whistles have just gone in the midweek matches tonight, and the shock result is Rangers 2-2 draw away to bottom club Livingston. Once again speculation will mount over the future of manager Alex McLeish, as Rangers throw away a 2 goal lead to give Livingston only their 4th point of the season.

A Edgaras Jankauskas goal gave managerless Hearts a 1-0 win at home to Kilmarnock to remain 3 points clear of Celtic at the top. A Stilian Petrov hat-trick helped on-form Celtic to an easy 5-0 home win over Motherwell.
