Turkish Football Legends

Recommended Posts

Under this thread, we can bring up the greatest Turkish players ever to grace the Turkish stadia. Instead of comments, let me leave the stage to the greats.

LEFTER KUCUKANDONYADIS - "Ordinaryus"

Born in Istanbul to a Greek father and a Turkish mother in 1925, Lefter is one of the leading scorers of Fenerbahce history. He scored 423 goals in total for his beloved Fenerbahce between 1947 and 1963. He started his footballing career at Taksimspor in 1941 and scored more than 90 goals in the Istanbul Third Amateur Division White Group in five years. He was signed by Fenebahce on April 1947 for a pair of boots and socks and became the greatest footballer Fenerbahce had. He went to play for two top teams in Europe of the time, Fiorentina in 1951 and Nice in 1953 and he was also the Istanbul Premier League Topscorer in 1953 and 1954 with 15 and 21 goals respectively. Lefter is also the first Turkish player to be selected for the World XI and he also is the first player to grace the Turkish National Team jersey 50 times. He is the second top scorer of Turkish National Team ever with 21 goals in 53 appearances, a record only to be broken by Hakan Sukur in 1999. Lefter is one of the members of the Turkish National team that took part in the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. On his playing days he was called "Ordinaryus" because of his wonderful footballing skills and Fenerbahce fans also created a chant for him: "Ver Leftere Yazsin Deftere!"

TURGAY SEREN - "Buyuk Kaptan" & "Berlin Panteri"

One of the living legends of Galatasaray football history, Turgay Seren was born in 1932. He is still considered as the best goalkeeper Galatasaray and Turkey ever produced. He played his professional career at the age of 15 and played for 19 seasons for Galatasaray until 1966. He is still the youngest National Team goalkeeper Turkey ever has. He won his first cap in 1950 and in the famous victory against West Germany in 1951, he produced a legendary performance in Turkey's 2-1 win in Berlin by saving 42 shots and is known as "Berlin Panteri" (the Panther of Berlin) ever since. Turgay Seren won 49 caps for Turkish National Team and on 35 occasions he was the skipper. He played in more than 500 games for Galatasaray and he captained Galatasaray between 1959 to 1966, earning him the nickname "Buyuk Kaptan" (the Great Captain).

RIDVAN DILMEN - "Seytan"

Ridvan Dilmen was born in 1962. He started his career with Muglaspor in 1977 and he moved to Boluspor in 1982. He was suddenly recognized by big name teams with his goal scoring ability but his next move was a surprise one to Sariyer, a local club in Istanbul who just got promoted to Turkish First Division in 1985. He moved to Fenerbahce for the 1987-88 season for a record fee of 7.5 trillion Turkish Liras. He instantly showed his skills at Kadikoy and terrorised the opposite team's right flank. In a Fenerbahce-Trabzonspor game, he was horribly injured in 1989 and never turned out to be the player he ever was since. He called it quits in 1994. Ridvan wore the Turkish National team jersey 37 times grabbing 7 goals.

METIN OKTAY - "Tacsiz Kral"

Metin Oktay was born in 1936 in Izmir. He is known as one of the greatest players that ever graced the Turkish stadia. He was a top striker at his time and is famous for his derby performances.

Metin Oktay's first transfer was from an amateur Izmir-based team Yun Mensucatspor to Izmirspor in 1954. In his first season in the Izmir A Division, he scored 17 goals in 18 appearances and having noticed his skills, Galatasaray's legend head coach Gunduz Kilic signed him in 1955 for a Chevrolet car. He was 19 when he pulled on a CimBom jersey for the first time and he ended up that season with 19 goals in 19 games for Galatasaray.

Excluding the one season he played for Palermo of Italy in 1961-62, he played for Galatasaray until he called it quits in 1969. He scored a total of 632 goals in 629 appearances and to add to that, he scored 18 goals against Fenerbahce and 13 goals against Besiktas. Especially his goal that broke the nets against Fenerbahce is still sweetly recalled by old faithfuls of Galatasaray. He is third in total goalscoring ratio of Turkish First Division ---or SuperLeague as known now--- with 217 goals, 7 goals short of Hakan Sukur and 23 short of another Galatasaray legend Tanju Colak. He had 36 caps for Turkey and scored 19 goals. He passed away in 1991 after a horrendous car crash.

FATIH TERIM - "Imparator"

Born in 1953, Fatih Terim started his footballing career at Adana Demirspor in 1969. In 1975 he moved to Galatasaray and until his retirement in 1985, he played 327 games for the club. From 1978 onwards, he captained the team.

Terim was capped 51 times and scored 2 international goals. Being one of the greatest players of Galatasaray ever, he unfortunately tasted no championship success during his playing career.

But in his career as manager, he simply tasted everything possible. For short periods between 1987 and 1990 he coached Ankaragucu and Goztepe. In 1991 he was appointed as the Turkey U21 General Manager. He led the team to 1993 Mediterranean Games title and also is known as the founder of a great generation that carried Turkey to 2002 World Cup success. Players such as Hakan Sukur, Erol Bulut, Alpay Ozalan and Rustu Recber were all included in that 1993 team. He moved on to coach the NT in 1994 and carried Turkey to its first-ever international competition since 1954 World Cup, to EURO'96 in England.

Between 1996 and 2000, he won 4 Turkish First Division titles, 2 Turkish Cups and 3 TSYD Cups with Galatasaray. His name became synonymous with success after he and his glorious Galatasaray team brought Turkey its first ever silverware in European Club Competitions by beating Arsenal in the UEFA Cup Final in May 17, 2000.

He went on to coach Fiorentina in 2000-01 and carried a financially-troubled team to 4th overall but had to resign after falling out with Vittorio Cecchi Gori.

In 2001-02 season he started as AC Milan headcoach and had a record of 4:3:2 before being sacked for discussing with Adriano Galleani.

He came back to coach Galatasaray in 2002-03 but two unsuccessful seasons ended up in his resignation. He's now coaching Turkish National Team since July 1, 2005. He's a beloved figure for all Galatasaray and Fiorentina fans.

TANJU COLAK - "Altın Kral"

One of the greatest ever strikers of Turkey, Tanju Colak was born in Samsun in the year 1963. With his 240 goals in the Turkish First Division, he still is the leader in this category.

He started his career with Samsun Yolspor in 1979 and was snapped up by Samsunspor in 1982. After sitting on the bench for a few seasons, he became the Topscorer in Turkey in 1986 and 1987. He was signed by Galatasaray in the summer of 1987.

In his first season with the Lions, he scored 39 goals and broke the Turkish all-time record for most number of goals in a season, formerly held by Metin Oktay, another great Galatasaray legend. In 1988-89 season, when Galatasaray was a semi-finalist in European Champions Cup, Colak was the sniper of the team as he scored a hat-trick against Xamax Neuchatel in the unforgettable game when Galatasaray bear the Swiss club 5-0 to turn the 3-0 loss around.

He was also a topscorer in 1989-90 season. In a very surprise move, he joined Fenerbahce in 1991 but failed to make an impression there. He played for Istanbulspor, then in the Second Division, until the summer of 1994 and he quit football on September 1994 after he suffered a serious knee injury.

He is called "Altın Kral" ("The Golden King") as he received the European Golden Boot Award for his performance in 1987-88...

Unfortunately, he was imprisoned for a supposed crime of theft in 1997.
