Standard set on Sérgio Conceição

Monday, 9 August 2004

R. Standard de Liège have signed Portuguese international Sérgio Conceição, the Belgian UEFA Cup challengers announced on Monday evening.

One-year contract

The 29-year-old winger has signed a contract until the end of the current campaign, having left UEFA Champions League winners FC Porto – where he found his first-team opportunities limited, starting just eight league games in 2003/04 – when his contract expired at the end of last season.

Title triumphs

Sérgio Conceição first came to prominence at Porto in his first spell at the club between 1996 and 1998, winning two Portuguese league titles in the process. He subsequently moved to Italy, collecting a Serie A title with S.S. Lazio in 1999/00 and also appearing for Parma FC and FC Internazionale.

International appearances

He also appeared at UEFA EURO 2000™, scoring a hat-trick in Portugal's 3-0 victory against Germany, and in all has appeared 56 times for his country, scoring 12 times. "We hope the player will also be able to give his best for Standard, and that we can profit from his experience and capabilities," his new club said in a statement to announce the transfer.
