eleftheropoulos always had games where he is the best keeper in the world. but he also has games where you play without a goalkeeper. he was our no.1 before he got injured and otto picked sub nikopolidis from then on and never went back. i dont think he is in ottos plans anymore.

at the moment there are rumours he may return to greece and aek. i would welcome him back. in terms of talent and potential he probably is and always was better than nikopolidis. although nikopolidis is more constant. but eleftheropoulos like many olympiakos players is said to have a very bad character. i mean he was the reason antzas called it quits at thrylos.

Sifakis oftens makes mistakes that an amatuer wouldn't. He isnt consistent at all.

I totally agree, Sifakis makes mistakes that you don't see in Sunday league football when the horia tis kiprou are playing! Look at the Olympiako game this year!

From what you saw would you say that he is the natural successor to Nikopolidi or is he finished?

i'm always in favor of neww blood for the national team not used blood.... finding someone else would always be a better solution

I bet Nikopolidis is our man up to the 2010 WCup - then after we win that - he will retire

I hope not because that will make him like 40 right? But it will be nice to win the WC in 2010!! :box:

Greek keeper loving Italian job - PA Sport

Although Ascoli's Serie A relegation looks all but sealed, much-travelled goalkeeper Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos is content that he appears to have finally settled somewhere.

And the former Greece international has made a good start at attempting to do something he has never been all that good at - performing when it really matters.

Eleftheropoulos supported what was his local club, Olympiacos, and at an early age got on the books of the Athens team, eventually making 152 appearances from 1997-2003.

He also spent a spell on loan with Proodeftiki and while in Greece earned a reputation for top-class handling in one-on-one situations, great vision, astonishing flying saves and was also regarded as something of a penalty saving specialist.

Capped five times for Greece, he was nicknamed 'The Eagle' due to his stylish approach to goalkeeping.

Unfortunately, a dire start to the 2003 campaign with Olympiacos led to accusations in the press that he was ruining his career by becoming overly-involved in nightlife and with top models.

Eleftheropoulos then decided his way out of Greece lay with Messina, then newly promoted to Serie A. However, Eleftheropoulos, who had become something of a celebrity in his homeland for the wrong reasons, failed in his bid to grab the first-team jersey from in-form Marco Storari.

He then spent time with AC Milan and AS Roma on loan but his form never recovered and poor performances when given opportunities meant a consistent run never came.

Joining Serie A newcomers Ascoli represented an exciting and fresh challenge for the Greek but also meant he had played for four clubs in only three years.

However, the move has now finally brought out the best in him, with a string of glowing reviews coming his way for his performances in the absence of former Italy international Gianluca Pagliuca.

Eleftheropoulos, delighted with his recent form, said: "The important thing is what the squad does, not a single player. I am motivated and in form, and playing after so much inactivity makes me happy."

Seven points adrift of safety with only eight matches remaining, Ascoli face a huge task to avoid the drop but a recent improvement in form can be attributed to Eleftheropoulos, who conceded only three goals during a tricky run of matches against Parma, Roma and Inter Milan.

However, Ascoli coach Nedo Sonetti must soon decide whether to recall Pagliuca or stick with Eleftheropoulos, who has done well and appears to be enjoying his time on the pitch.

During Pagliuca's absence the Italian press have widely reported a rift between the veteran and Sonetti, which would represent encouraging times for 32-year-old Eleftheropoulos.

Asked about the goalkeeping situation, Sonetti would only say: "My job is to think of the team and not about individual players."
