Athens stages ticketing launch

A special ceremony will be held in Athens on Monday to launch the start of ticket applications for the 2007 UEFA Champions League final.

Distinguished guests

The event will take place at 12.30 local time (11.30CET) at the Maroussi Town Hall, the district in the Greek capital where the Olympic Stadium is based. Maroussi mayor Giorgios Patoulis will be present along with Vassilis Gagatsis, the president of the Hellenic Football Federation (HFF) and the UEFA Executive Committee member Marios N Lefkaritis.

Latest news

Gagatsis will also talk about the latest preparations for the 23 May final, which will be the first European showpiece in the city since the venue was rebuilt to stage the 2004 Olympic Games. The stadium previously provided the backdrop to the UEFA Champions League final of 1993/94, when AC Milan were 4-0 winners against FC Barcelona. Media representatives wishing to attend should contact the HFF either by email: [email protected], or by phone: +30 210 9370328, or by fax: +30 210 9370327.

Athens to stage handover and draw

Athens - the venue for this season's final - is to host both the UEFA Champions League quarter-final and semi-final draw and trophy handover ceremony next month.

Established tradition

Since the 1997 UEFA Champions League final in Munich, it has become an established tradition for the holders to formally return the European Champion Clubs' Cup to UEFA at a special ceremony and for the trophy then to be handed to the host city to display. This season's handover is, for only the second time, to be combined with the draw for the remaining knockout rounds. The event will be staged on Friday 9 March at 13.00 local time (12.00CET) in the Nikos Skalkotas hall at the Megaron international conference centre.

Keep and display

The 2006 champions, FC Barcelona, will formally return the new UEFA Champions League trophy - the Catalan club was the first to win the new cup after Liverpool FC had earned the right to keep the old version in 2005 - to UEFA President Michel Platini. He will then hand it to the mayor of Athens, Nikitas Kaklamanis, for the city to display to the public until this season's UEFA Champions League final is played at the Olympic Stadium on Wednesday 23 May.

'Home' team

The draw for the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League will be followed by another 'draw' for the final as, for administrative purposes, one of the finalists will be designated as the 'home' team. In the draws, no teams will be seeded and, for the first time this season, teams from the same national association may be drawn against each other. The draw will be conducted by ad interim UEFA CEO Gianni Infantino, assisted by Friedrich Stickler, chairman of the UEFA club competitions committee, and Theodore Zagorakis, the captain of Greece's UEFA EURO 2004™-winning team, who has been appointed the UEFA Champions League final ambassador.

Media requests

Media representatives wishing to attend the draw and cup handover ceremonies in Athens should send their requests via email to [email protected] with 'Athens Cup Handover and Draw' in the subject header. The deadline is Wednesday 28 February. Wireless internet access will be available in the Media working area (room MC3) but media representatives requiring additional communication lines are kindly asked to make their requests via their national telecom company.
