There are 2 reasons we lost.  Its very simple.

    1.  We had Crespo playing Matos' position AND in the style of Matos, even though it isn't his skill set WHILE MATOS IS SITTING AT HOME BEING PAID!

    2. We started without a striker.  I would have AT THE VERY LEAST started the Swiderski and get Colak in there early if it didn't work out....or just start Colak straight up.

Those are all coaching issues.  Crespo, to his credit, played his heart out.  He just isn't built to be an attacking player.  He doesn't have the smart pass or shot for it.

I think a 4-2-3-1 formation would have been more compatible to our roster.

    Agree.

Crespo on the flank.....what a mess...for himself (his own "protection") and the squad.

I also prefer a 4-2-3-1 and maybe, yes, more compatible with what we have.

Comparing to the previous season Abel understood and now avoid to start playing too low in the pitch. Avoid suicidal passes and minimizing fatal mistakes at the back. Now we play in a more direct style. In that sense, I thought it was even promising. But this guy complicates the simple and I don't see fluid processes independently on the way he wants the team to play.

Abel is a "lost case/cause", I think. No horizon.

on paper him subbing pelkas made no sense. pelkas was on a yellow, could have had a second. when things got desperate pelkas is not smart enough to keep his feet to himself.

the hardest one for me to understand was the taking varela off instead of michailidis. varela at least has some presence from set pieces and michailidis was very poor.

Totally agree on Pelkas and Varela.

Varela would be important at that time (0-1). In attacking set pieces (winning aerial balls) and even on a better positioning at defensive recovery.

Maybe Abel did not want to "double-kill" Michailidis's confidence after the own-goal.

Abel...what an inability...one more season with him!??! Come back Lucescu....yesterday!

Made a lot of sense considering the "system" he plays. He is not a CF.

Having said that, the "system" is the problem not Pelkas. Something has to give when you play with 3 centre backs.

Pelkas is an attacking mid that should be part of a 3 man midfield in a 4-3-3 or 4-2-1-3 if you like.

The problem is the system with these players he choose. No centre forward? Crespo at the right wing in a 3-4-3 (5-2-3)?! Loss of time and game. There was the need in getting, at least, 1-0....

All systems are valid but need the right players, options, dynamics.

Typically yes but today he seemed to have more left to give.

With a yellow card, all nervous and pressure on the air, he could be powder keg. But I would always prefer to have him playing more minutes. Even worn out. In any case, in this case I can understand Abel. On the other options, not at all.

  6. It seemed so reachable.

Even understanding the focus on equilibrium, balance, I always expected more willingless to invade, more desire, more risk. Too much rational, and no effetive attacking connections, solutions.

Globally poor and again: not only an individual quality issue. For this proposed tactical approach, no real fluid processes.

PAOK, Abel…within real reach, but a tragedy. Repeated history. Fail to access CL group stage again. Endless frustration.

3-4-3, more fear to concede than to invade. Focus on defensive recovery, compactability, all together. Control and avoid a high defensive line. Pressure flashes and intermittent combinations. Crespo, central back at right wing, 3 in front but without a striker. Loss of time, loss of game. Some good moments but generally tasteless, without urgency, when we needed to make a result (at least 1-0). Too much time to "wake up". And the cumulus of the own goal against. Suddenly panic, finally dare and then 1-1. It seemed easy. Why not sooner?! But then also 1-2, 1 minute later. Surreal fragility. The fatal side of taking more risks, but quickly uncover at the back (already without Varela). There is questionable individual quality, but the tactical blanket is short.

Again killed by suicide. All this in a disturbing Toumba… .a volcano turned into an empty cemetery.

  8. Die at 3’, buried at 9', breathe again at 10', come back to life at 12’. Insane start.

Emotion at limit with Pelkas...3-2! What a desarming delight!

    Surviving at the end.

Globally, poor again, but we felt the hunger, the passion, the nerve!

Toumba, a volcano erupting…unceasing support. So special. Like no other.

No real confidence and a lot of work to do. But still alive for the second leg!

Vieirinha is out of the squad due to injury.

    Starting lineup:

    Εικόνα

Understand not to risk with Matos, out of position, at the center. Go with two center backs. But Ingason had a very poor performance with Pana away (Super League, 0-2) and quite intermittent in other matches.

Understand also to go with almost all in their "natural" role. Just do not like Pelkas start from right even if he will cut in to the center. Would prefer to have him from the left.

And Zivkovic out of the squad? Rotation in the Cup?

Let's see if we can at least activate fluid transitions and to improve pass accuracy. Tight lines when defending.

Toumba, vibrant soul! To be our vulcanic fortress. And become unsurpassed again.

Season comes down to this IMO. The league is over, we aren't making up 7 points I think even the most passionate PAOK fan can see that.  Need a good result here to go to Karaiskakis with a fighting chance. It's going to be tough, they are a good team as we know. Our form is poor (We never really set the world alight this season) not to mention our issue at the heart of our defense. I think Mihaj is the logical choice as he has some senior experience in the Super league and is actually a center back. Who ever gets the nod is being thrown under the bus, either it will be someone playing out of position (Matos) or someone who has hardly seen the pitch this season (Mihaj/Michalidis)
If we manage to keep a clean sheet it will be a minor miracle.

    Agreed.

Matos as centre back will give speed but it will be risky in terms of positioning and equilibrium . Also easily attracted....and end up out of place. Don't know Mihaj. No other real options. Midfield needs to help and be solid and "compacted".

    (Nervous) countdown...

I wonder what will Ferreira do to wake up the players and take this game seriously? I am afraid we are looking at a serious embarrassment on Wednesday.

And Abel needs to wake himself up.  We should done much better with these players. Persist in trying to bring tactical hybridity is potentiating errors, accidents and a lot of spaces conceded. Try to consolidate a simpler but consistent approach.

Certainly!  And with this result it's fair to say the title race is 95% over.  Can't see how Olympiakos will drop 7 points and that's assuming we win every game which is unlikely to the extreme.  To be fair the team has been fairly meh all year.  Not terrible but not anywhere near like last season.  The team has suffered all round this season.  From GK and defense everyone is down a gear or two.  The midfield even though we spent 5+ million is worse.  Gimme Shakhov and Canas any day.  At least they had some fight in them.  Everyone was happy to see Prijovic go but we've never replaced him.  No physical presence up front.

For now Abel it is.  Let's see what he can make of it.  Even if we could off load him (extremely unlikely) who can you get now and can you be sure they'll be better.  I'm not happy with Abel but I don't want anyone else.  Except Lucescu of course.  Why we didn't sign Lucescu for 5 years I'll never know.  M-a-l-a-k-a yios tou Savvidi.

What I hope to see is a general improvement in the team over the play offs and move into the pre-season on something of a high.  There are still many question marks over the squad.  Add to that the fact we can't spend unless we make a decent sale and things become even tougher.  I hope Abel changes things up next season.  I don't expect him to change too much for the remainder of this season.

Totally agree with you Bananas. But please not for next season.

I've already posted about the poor performance and tactics. With no tangible improvements. I really do not believe him. Obviously he should finish this season, but it will be painful if he remains.
