Once again I opted to not watch the game and take photos of an empty London instead and once again it seems I made the right choice.

The team is an absolute shambles and these players are just not good enough. A stone wall penalty not given to Asteras in the first half and I have no idea how VAR did not give it. If that would have happened to us, Lil' George would have already uploaded something to his Instagram account. It wasn't us who dropped two points today - it was Asteras.

Paschalakis should have been sold in the summer. I can't see us finding a buyer now. He is absolute liability.

Paschalakis, I even understand he is elastic but with no brains. In any case, selling him and who will you be buying to replace him?!

  2. Honestly I did not expect this win. Globally, modest performance but a win! Against this also poor AEK, we should have all to manage second leg as confortable as possible and go to final against Oly. Finally all motivation there to win the Cup against them. Even playing this "nothing".

We can be thankful that Panathinaikos only had 3 attempts on goal or the scoreline would have been much worse.

Garcia outcoached the same way as in the recent game against them. They let us have useless possession in the first 30 minutes and then counter with their only chance in that half.

In the 2nd half we go on all attack and miss a big chance with Crespo. Had we scored there it probably would have been a different game. Then Panthinaikos has a second shot on goal and they score. Poor wall set by Paschalakis who than is in the wrong position and jumps in the wrong direction. Three mistakes by our goalie in one play. And the rest is history.

"Garcia outcoached the same way as in the recent game against them." That's it. And so easily. Against the practical and simple style of Bölöni...

Are there still any doubts related to the repeated García's unability?! Too poor to be believed.

Keep this lethargy regarding next season's preparation, coach and market and we will see next season be lost before starting.

Vieirinha, Kagawa and Ninua did not train today and will most likely miss the game.

My lineup (going with 4-3-3 to match AEK's midfield):

    -------------- Zivkovic ---------------
    Rodrigo - Ingason - Crespo - Rahman
    --- Tsiggaras - Warda - Schwab -----
    Zivkovic ----- Krmencik ------- Tzolis

4-2-3-1? With Warda supporting the Loco striker?! And Varela? And Augusto? Need to see any progression from Tsiggaras. We need a real striker.

All it takes is one poor season for his value to drop and for offers to dry up. Happened with Klaus, Jaba, Pelkas, Limnios, etc etc etc. It would be logical for them to try to retain him, but if the sums get too ridiculous, then they'd be foolish not to accept it. Personally, I think he plays in a position that is easily to find replacements for.

I do agree that there are a number of players we can get rid of. Augusto, Jaba, Lamprou, Murg, Ninua, Pereira, and Michailidis are all underachieving (though they all have the potential to be pretty good). I like Swiderski and Soares a LOT more than most people here, but if we had the cash to get big upgrades for them, then why not?

Right now, the only players that I think are consistently good in the squad are Krmencik, Zivkovic, Warda, Schwab, Tzolis, Ingason, and Zivkovic. Maybe throw Tsiggaras in there too, at least lately.

Where is Jaba?! So promising player lost in "translation"?!

Krmencik consistently good?! Seriously? I see him waste a lot of chances. Poor finishing. Swiderski should improve.

    Summarizing (1st part):

Zivkovic (31),  Jun.22, try to sell ; need a real upgrade here

Paschalakis (31), contract exp. Jun.22, keep it as eternal reserve

Talichmanidis (19), Jun.23, need to see him in action first

    Rodrigo (28), Jun.22, sell ; need upgrade

Vieirinha (35), Jun.21, retire and join technical team

Lyratzis (21), Jun.22, need to see him in action first

Ingason (27), Jun.22, sell ; need real upgrade

Varela (33), Jun.22, keep it as Old King for rotation and "dressing room" power

    Michailidis (21), Jun.23, loan to other SuperLeague team to be in starting 11;

    Crespo (34), Jun.22, sell ; need upgrade

Mihaj (22), Jun.23, need to see him in action first

Baba (26), loaned from Chelsea, need to see its continuity first

Pereira (21), Jun.24, loan to Eredivisie or Jupiler League?!

bluevertigo - Tzolis is not here for the long term. We can't retain players when the big dogs who play in well-run leagues come and poach them. Keep them for too long, and they are more likely to drop in value than increase, too. I don't like the riskiness that comes with that.

At least one more season, I think we should "fight" to retain him. Sell all the other garbage that should never have come.

Drop in value instead of increase...obviously but only if you have a poor manager or a non-attractive project, inoperative to empower and operationalize young promising players.

I think it's the right time to change and allow PAOK to properly prepare next season. Not to loose it right now.

The coach you would like I think only exists in video games.  A world class manager that can coach in top leagues is not coming to Greece with that the exception of possibly Olympiacos.  I’m not saying there isn’t better than Garcia, I’m saying these better managers can’t be convinced to come to PAOK.  Add in FFP rules and that’s the nail in the coffin.  All of our managers in the past 5 or so years with the exception of Huub Stevens who was a has been have all been coaches who never coached a “big” team.  It so happened Lucescu worked out.  Ivic was looking good there but politics got in the way.  Now Garcia it is.

I am not convinced the problem is not the squad.  Across every line we are weaker compared to 2 years ago.

Matos > Rodrigo by a lot.  Varela is half the player he was, if that.  Same for Vieirinha.  Crespo is honest but again not as good.

Canas, Shakhov, Mauricio much better midfield than today.

No wingers in the squad.  At least proper wingers.  Seriously not one guy can take on the flank and beat it.

No number 10.  Don’t know what the hell happened to Biseswar and he fell so quickly.

No strikers although I don’t mind the new guy, at least he’s aggressive and hungry.

Pereira asks too much, that is true. But he is not a world class. I admit some immediate difficulty in finding an alternative, realistic and effective solution as a coach. But I prefer to spend on that than in hyped or banal players to serve some interests.

The squad may be worst but a good manager turns poor into average, the average into good....with support of a collective proposal, adjustable tatics and dynamics. With García (even in only few months), I can't see good signals. Long distances (intra and inter-lines), poor precision, a lot of spaces conceded. Lucescu, in his first season, was able to prepare the team to protect itself from its own weaknesses and propose a simple plan (safe possesion, mask transition) with authority. Protection, consistency, continuity.

If we get our alleged price for Tzolis, we would be able to restock pretty nicely.

Giannoulis, Tzolis are crucial differentiators, from "cantera", that appears one time in 4 years. Who will come with the money we will do? This is the error. Tzolis should continue next season.

For me Garcia needs another season.

Also let Pablo make the summer transfer, sick of these Rebbe types making deals and sorting out their careers and f***ing paok in the process.

Let Garcia bring the players he needs to succeed we only need 4 quality players and we are ready to challenge

Can't see that on the horizon. Better individual quality will help but not solve a poor proposal and when we do not know how to go.

End of the day what manager is out there that can make this current squad win the title ?  I don’t think even Lucescu could get within 10 points of the title.  The squad is lacking on all lines, defence, midfield, attack.  It’s not terrible by any means but even one weakness can be exposed and there are small weaknesses all over the place.  Lack of concentration in defence, lack of defensive cover in the middle, lack of transition from the middle, lack of creativity, lack of finishing.

I think this talk of replacing Garcia is ridiculous.  Replace him with who ?  Even Lucescu had a budget double what we have now.  The team is in a rebuild phase and is constrained financially.  I’m not sure much can be done - best we can hope for short term is Garcia produces a few players from the youth that form a core group of players.  But we don’t want them to be too good, ridiculous as that sounds - it’s already likely Tzolis is leaving at the end of the year.

For me, it's not ridiculous. It's just question the current moment and the future. I think it's obvious that independently from what we have as a squad (individual quality) at the moment, we are seeing poor tatics, dynamic, adjustment and flexibility to adapt to players we have at the moment. But do you think we will have better quality next season? And onward?

There should be viable options to consider as manager (Vítor Pereira? although with a high budget ; any greek or SuperLeague coach?)

Don't really want Lucescu back. Still don't like the way he left the team. We really need to give Garcia time to build his own team, just like we let Lucescu build his team.

People are afraid of endless coach changes. I understand that. But Abel was the same story. It was so obvious from the beginning that we was an inapt. Then he won Libertadores with Palmeiras, but that doesn't make him a real capable coach. He is a fraud. South America on autopilot with the support of better individual quality.

Lucescu was the best we have in so many years. Tactically, style of play, proposal/strategy. And, it was so easy to find that even when he was at Xanthi. Limitations, context, but consistency, balance.

There are always good or bad (tactical) signals. Even with only a few matches.

In fact, I'm definetely not finding a potential good alternative. But it might have. I'm not seeing a promising horizon going with García.

Lucescu left because he was unable to acquire the players he wanted. These are probably still be out of reach due to the same  reason: FFP. Why would he come back now?

Yes, it's impossible now. And Lucescu seems to be targeted by Fener. If Castro leaves, perhaps his father's influence can helps him to be closer to Shakhtar.

Is there any real promising alternative as a coach already managing in Greece?!

  13. 1 hour ago, Athens4 said:

Again, I don't think he should have been given the job in the first place but now he is here we need to give him time. We can't keep changing managers every 4 months.

I understand that but if we do not change in antecipation to allow a good preparation of next season we could throwing away it. I think we should consider to go for a more effort on a credible manager (for at least 2,3 years), with a robust tatical's proposal and consistent operationalization, than in "hyped" or just superfluous players. It's impossible, but I would love to have Lucescu again.  Or rather, I would say that after he was Champion in Thessaloniki (2018-19), he "should" have followed one year more to finally reach Champions League.

  14. All is decided (Oly will win), there's lack of motivation....but fight for 2nd place must be mandatory since it will be relevant to next season (Europe).

But a feel of degradation is in the air. High risk of failure if we are not able to improve global performance. Within the poor and the basic with García.

It's important to antecipate and properly prepare next season.

We are in the rebuilding process which started at the beginning of this season. Going back to Lucescu who basically deserted the team would be a step backward.

since we decided to go with Garcia we need to stick with him and let him create his own team (part of rebuilding). Garcia should be evaluated at the end of the 2021-2022 season.

Deserted the team?! In which sense?

Garcia did not prepare and start the season from the beginning but there are always some good/bad tactical signals despite what the coach has in his hands. Honestly I'm not seeing that with Garcia. Too much discontinuity, inaptitude to create invasion, too much spaces conceded in defensive transition. Obviously better individual quality will help, but globally I have many doubts in Garcia's proposal.
