PANELEFSINIAKOS FC

A HISTORIC CLUB OF PEOPLE PASSIONATE WITH QUALITY FOOTBALL

PANELEFSINIAKOS FC is the great sports pride of the city of Elefsis.

The club was found in 1931 and is one of the oldests sports clubs in the area of

Peraeus.

In the beginning the team was competing against Olympiakos Peiraeus, Ethnikos Peraeus and other local clubs in the Peraeus local league.

The club has represented the city three times in the First Greek Division, which are

during the years 1961-62, 1967-68 and 1998-99.

Even though not many statistics or data can be found on the internet from this period, the club was known for its competitive football, the passionate home support and the demanding behaviour of the home fans to watch quality football.

From my personal experience I can recall several fixtures starting at the middle 80s, where a strong team played the football we all dreamed , with players like Polyzos, Mpardis, Philipis, Kalitzakis with the last playing european footbal and in the national team. At this age the club raised a strong support of at least 1,500 capacity for every single home game and the following results are representative of the position of the club in the Greek football scene, related to other established clubs.

Let s count together the scores.

1984-85: PANELEFSINIAKOS-PANILIAKOS 5-0

1985-86: PANELEFSINIAKOS-AIGALEO 3-2

PANELEFSINIAKOS-KALAMATA 3-0

PANELEFSINIAKOS-ATROMITOS ATHINWN 3-1

PANELEFSINIAKOS-PANARGEIAKOS 2-1

These were some of the most memoriable games, deeply affecting my passionate approach to the club and what this represents.

The symbol of the club is a gold 'wheat' and the name of the club in blue letters.

the colours were always blue-white.

The first time the club wore another colour than a blue shirt at a home game was against FC Kavala for the second division, in a major derby of that age. We wore yellow , coming from our gold 'wheat', and had as a trainer at this time Mr. N. Anastopoulos. The capacity at this game was around 3,000 people, making one of the hottest atnospheres ever the club has played. Unfortunately the game has ended with a 1-1 draw.

The 'wheat' in the shirt of PANELEFSINIAKOS FC represents the one that Godess Demetra has gifted to the people of Elefsis according to the myth, giving them the very exclusive privilege between all other people of all other cities to be the first to cultivate the land and produce grains. People of Elefsis then progessed and shared this knowledge with all other people of all other cities. The 'wheat' was firstly given from Demetra to the son of the king of Elefsis, named Triptolemos.

Therefore PANELEFSINIAKOS FC reasonably inherited this unique historic symbol when it was found on 1931, and the supporters of the club are charmingly called 'those who bring wheats' (=staxyoforoi).

The symbol of our club is for us, the most valuable historic symbol ever wore as a football logo in a football shirt in Greece, bringing a very special historic meaning and an emotional importance to all the supporters of PANELEFSINIAKOS FC. This is the continuity of history and life in this sacred city through the ages, and now through football.

Comparisons in terms of status, with the symbols of other biggest and also historic clubs of Greece, like the'shamrock' of PANATHINAIKOS, or the'young man' of OLYMPIAKOS or even the 'two headed hawk' of AEK ATHENS are far from reach (for all of them).

Far from the reach history of the past, PANELEFSINIAKOS FC is a noble but timid football club which is now struggling in the non-rated local Divisions (A topiko).

A number of years of mismanagement and serious errors in the strategy of the club, brought it higher than where it should have been (A Division appearance at 1998-99).

Therefore, PANELEFSINIAKOS FC was turned from a fearsome club having established a long tradition of consequitive appearances in the Greek Division B, to a 'David' against the big Goliaths of Division A.

Instead of maintaing our record of spoiling clubs like PAS GIANNENA, BEROIA, LARISA, APPOLON KALAMARIAS, FOSTIRAS, ATROMITOS ATHINWN, AIGALEO at our home in the Division B (3-0 a frequent result at this time) where we actually belong, we were turned to fight the relegation battle in Division A at the year 1998-99.

Club owners entered into many Division A 'big' players contracts, loading the club with heavy financial commitments for several years while at the same time they took advantage of the higher TV contracts offered at that age.

The financial imbalances created at that age and the TV money dissapeared is the reason that put the club into todays position playing at A' Topiko.

The year of the First Division 1998-99 however not everything else was fair, apart from the money.

The club starts well with a 0-0 draw at home against AEK , takes a draw at Aris Thesalonikis 0-0 in Thaesaloniki, and collects points here and there to avoid relegation. We only suffered close defeats with one goal difference against OLYMPIAKOS and PANATHINAIKOS, having scored against both.

However, the football syndicate prefrered Proodeftiki to stay up instead of PANELEFSINIAKOS FC, as the previous year Proodeftiki has granted PAO a critical victory at Korydallos. The repay put accidentaly PANELEFSINIAKOS FC as the victiom and consequently Proodeftiki was given a penalty gift to score and win 1-2 in Elefsis.

PANELEFSINIAKOS FC relegated to DIVISION B again but much poorer this time, with investors having abandoned the club in debt as also various sponsors left away (namely PETROLA). However the strongest impact was the lower confidence from us, the disgusted fans.

The team started to flow, following a continuously downlead route, changing from a quality team to a mediocre club of Division B initially (early 90s), then playing extra game (mparaz) against Trikala FC in Harilaou,Thesaloniki to avoid relegation. The team was saved in this game showing opponents Trikala to way to Division C, but then followed relegation the next year.

With no money and serious debts, the club played well in the Division C, having succeded some spectacular results like beating FC Larisa 1-0 in 2001, with players unpayed and untrained for long, and without any crowd to support.

PANELEFSINIAKOS FC never relegated from Division C , as we secured our points to stay up in both our participations. We stepped down to Division D only because of debts to players.

PANELEFSINIAKOS FC now plays in Local A League (Topiko) to build its new team, orientated to home-grown footballers and not salary-earners from around the country and the world. The representation of the city and the nearby area (Thriasio pedio) with footballers in the team is the target of PANELEFSINIAKOS FC which stagely will go up again to play where it really belongs, to Division B.

This will inevitably take time, possibly half a decade, but we will be proud again to continue our history that brings PANELEFSINIAKOS FC to the top-10 rated clubs in participations and point-raising in Greek Division B.

After all these a great salute to all fellow supporters of PANELEFSINIAKOS FC, who we have stand and cheered and enjoyed together our club in the terraces of our football ground, either living in Elefsis or abroad. We are people we know and have seen a lot and respect good football.

Also our greetings to all other fellow supporters which have visitied our ground as away supporters, following their team in Elefsina, against us.

WE WILL RAISE AGAIN!

PANELEFSINIAKOS FC

LIVING HISTORY.
