JOHNNY
I had forgotton that I had the privilage of seeing the great man in action for Hibernian against my local club Hamilton at the end of his career. This must have been in 1979 or 1980, and it was my mother who insisted in taking me!! I suppose that sums Best up perfectly. Although a shadow of his former self (if not literally), he still managed to increase Hibs crowds from 8,000 to 20,000. His drinking was at a peak at this point, and on occassion failed to turn up for matches. When he played he was always keen to entertain. As one Hibs fan recalls "in a game against Rangers at Easter Road, Best was constantly abused by the visiting fans, who at one point threw a few beer cans in his direction. When he went over to take a corner, George picked a can up and appeared to take a drink from it - the abuse stopped to be replaced by laughter at both ends of Easter Road". Rest in peace. JOHNNY
A couple of Best quotes: "I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars - the rest I just squandered." "I used to go missing a lot...Miss Canada, Miss United Kingdom, Miss World..." (can anyone quiz the Miss Greece of this time? ;) ) (On David Beckham) "He cannot kick with his left foot, he cannot head a ball, he cannot tackle and he doesn't score many goals. Apart from that he's all right." "If I had been born ugly, you would never have heard of Pele" The most famous story of Best is where he is lying on a hotel bed with a naked top model sprawled naked accross him and a load of cash after a successful night at the casino. The porter enters the room to deliver Champagne and asks Best, "George, where did it all go wrong?"

Irlandos
JOHNNY (or anyone else), would you post a link - if such exists - to a goal Best scored with a cheaky little lob into the upper left corner, against a packed defence of 6-7 players in the penalty area? JOHNNY
This is the goal you are talking about. An amazing piece of skill and arrogance - fantastic! "Playing against Tottenham, he could see the penalty area crowded with teammates and opponents. Rather than make a pass or dribble past a defender, he decided to go direct for goal and audaciously lobbed the ball over everyone including Pat Jennings, one of the all-time great goalkeepers." See link below, and click Download on photo of best. It's a 2 minute clip, with only the final chip shown. Great footage though - a must see!! http://www.footygoal.net/details.php?image_id=
