MikeS
http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/2005/02/2.../938793-ap.html Greek soccer fans jailed IRAKLION, Greece (AP) - Four soccer fans were sentenced to between six and 15 months in prison following violence at Sunday's game between league leader Olympiakos Piraeus and struggling Ergotelis, court authorities said Tuesday. The four Olympiakos supporters were convicted Monday following their arrest during post-match violence on the island of Crete, where Ergotelis stunned the visitor with a 2-1 win. Rioting fans ripped up plastic seats at Pancrition stadium and set fires in the stands of the site built for last year's Olympic Games. Under a new anti-hooligan law, applied for the first time, the convicted fans were not released from prison custody pending their appeal. The court sentenced two to 15 months in prison, one to 12 months and one to six months, while the four were each fined 3,000 euros ($4,865). Olympiakos' loss helped Athens rivals Panathinaikos and AEK trim the gap to the competition lead to two and three points respectively.
