Hearts/Rangers - UEFA Cup

Recommended Posts

Both Hearts and Rangers kick off their Uefa Cup group matches tonight against Feyenoord and Polish side Amica Wronki.

Most interesting tie has to be the game in Rotterdam, which sees a Scottish side, other than the Old Firm, up against a quality European team. This should provide a good indication of the current position of Scottish club football within the context of European club competition. A good result would give a much needed boost to a country with a national side in rapid decline.

The other match has Rangers, who must be regarded as certainties to progress despite their inconsistant form, away to unknown package Amica Wronki.

Mixed fortunes for the Scots last night, with Rangers winning 5-0 and Hearts losing 3-0.

Amica Wronki 0-5 Rangers

Feyenoord 3-0 Hearts

Rangers run of victories continued with this emphatic result in Poland, which should give them some confidence in their pursuit of Celtic at domestic level, and progression to the knock out stage of the Uefa Cup.

Hearts on the other hand were left to rue a serous of poor refereeing decisions which could have changed the whole outcome of the tie. A controversial opener for Feyenoord, saw a headed goal while a player in an offside position was just in front of him. Interfering with play I would say. Shortly before half time, Hearts Canadian Kevin McKenna scored what seemed to be a legitimate goal from the corner of the box - only for it to be cruelly ruled out for Paul Hartley to be ruled offside, while walking away from goal in the middle of the box. Not interfering with play.

These points are academic of course, as the Dutch went on to firmly control the second half, adding a further two goals. But the lack of consistency among referees must have caused Hearts boss Craig Levein a sleepless night, to put it mildly.

Rangers hopes of progressing took a knock last night as they lost 1-0 away to AZ Alkmaar in Holland. They went down to a 7th minute goal by Alkmaar's Danny Landzaat.

Rangers must now take at least a point at home to Auxerre in the final match to ensure they advance. I'm sure their match with Pao will play heavily on the minds of all at Ibrox on that night.

Oh well, another typically disappointing night at Ibrox last night. Alex McLeish summed up Rangers Uefa Cup campaign perfectly:

"We were in pole position to get through to the next stage but we blew it, we absolutely blew it." Enough said!

A woeful performance saw Rangers lose 2-0 at home to an average Auxerre side sees both sides of the Old Firm out of Europe before Christmas. Not good enough for these so called giants. This must affect the number and quality of players brought in during the January transfer window. Surely they cannot afford to buy quality with onlt the SPL to play for.

Tonight sees Hearts carry the European hopes of the entire nation (ok, maybe not the Hibees across the city) when they face Hungarian side Ferencvaros at Murrayfield. A win for the Edinburgh club is required in addition to Basel dropping points at home to Feyenoord.

I can see a positive result in Edinburgh, but cannot see past a home win in Basel.

A good campaign nonetheless for the Jam Tarts.
