Rubens Barrichello set the pace on the opening day of testing at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in southern Spain today. While Williams, Renault, McLaren, BAR, Jordan, and Toyota tested at chilly and windy Silverstone, Ferrari and Sauber Petronas enjoyed the hot and sunny conditions in Spain.

Air temperature reached twenty-nine degrees Centigrade and the track almost forty-five degrees. Barrichello completed 74 laps of the 4.428km circuit, his fastest in 1m17.421s while Sauber fielded Felipe Massa who completed 72 laps, his best in 1m19.012s.

It's official - Villeneuve will test on Wednesday

The Renault F1 team announced this evening that Jacques Villeneuve will test for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday. If eveything goes according to plan Villeneuve will also replace Jarno Trulli at the Chinese Grand Prix next week.

Villeneuve conducted a seat-fitting at the team's Enstone base on Tuesday, and will begin acclimatising himself to the Renault R24 tomorrow at the Northamptonshire circuit.

"We have reached an agreement for Jacques to test for the team at Silverstone on Wednesday and Thursday," team chief Flavio Briatore confirmed. "This test might lead to Jacques joining the team for the final three races of the season beginning next week at the Chinese Grand Prix."

F1Racing.net is at Silverstone and will bring you all the latest news and the very first photos of Villeneuve testing for Renault as the session starts on Thursday morning.

 for Briatore who fired Trulli. Villeneuve is a talented driver but he hasn't been in a F1 cockpit for almost a year while Jarno Trulli has run thousands of km with the Renault! I doubt that JV will do a better job than Trulli would... <_<

Jacques Villeneuve signs with Sauber

A special day for Peter Sauber

Jacques Villeneue will be back in F1 in 2005

Sauber Petronas has signed Jacques Villeneuve as a new driver from the 2005 season onwards. The 33-year-old Canadian entered into a two- year contract, which will come into effect on November 1, 2004. Jacques Villeneuve will be the team-mate of Felipe Massa who will continue to drive for Sauber Petronas next year.

Expressing his enthusiasm about signing Jacques Villeneuve, Team Principal Peter Sauber expressed himself delighted.

"I have to admit that signing a former World Champion is something truly special for me," said Sauber. "However, I want to make it clear that this was not the decisive factor. When I was talking to Jacques, I could feel that he is absolutely keen and committed to return to Formula One. He was always a great fighter and I am convinced that together we can achieve a lot. I fully realise that signing a former World Champion is also an obligation for the team to provide him with a car that meets his expectations. Sauber Petronas has made considerable progress this year, and I am confident that we are ready to tackle this challenge."

Jacques Villeneuve, testing today with Renault at Silverstone, is also optimistic.

"I am extremely excited to be back in Formula One with the Sauber Petronas Team, and I appreciate the confidence everybody is showing in me," Villeneuve said. "It is my goal to work with Peter and his team to bring them forward in the championship during the next two seasons. In my recent visit to Sauber, I have been extremely impressed by the professionalism which is apparent throughout the factory. I am looking forward to seeing the results that will be developed by the state-of-the-art wind tunnel."

Jacques Villeneuve entered Formula One in 1996 and won a total of eleven races. He was World Champion in 1997.

The news means that F3000 Champion Tonio Liuzzi will not race with the team in 2005, but has been linked to a test role with the squad

Renault confirm - Trulli to join new team for China

The Renault F1 team and Jarno Trulli today announced that the Italian driver has been released from his obligations to the team with immediate effect. Trulli's early departure follows a mutual agreement that this course of action is in the best interests of both parties.

"Once again, we would like to thank Jarno for his contribution to the team over the past three years," said Renault boss Flavio Briatore. "The team and Jarno feel that an early separation will allow both parties to conclude the year in the most positive way."

Jarno Trulli added, "I am very comfortable with this decision. I would like to thank Renault for their support since 2002, and for the success we enjoyed together. I am grateful to the team for releasing me from my obligations, which will give me the opportunity to start with my new team sooner than expected."

The Mild Seven Renault F1 Team will announce its driver line-up for the Chinese Grand Prix in due course.

The Toyota Formula One team will announce their new driver on Thursday the team confirmed. It is expected that Jarno Trulli will join Ralf Schumacher at the Cologne-based Formula One team.

While Toyota is going to announce their new driver on Thursday the Renault team will most likely replace Jarno Trulli by Jacques Villeneuve at the Chinese Grand Prix next week. If Villeneuve is announced as a replacement for Trulli in China it is possible that Trulli will replace Zonta for the last two races of this season.

The Toyota team is denying those rumours though. "We don't have any plans to change our drivers for the remaining three races," a spokesperson told F1Racing.net

this is the best silly season ever!

You know what a moment of magic would be?

Imagine next years championship.... We are on the last race Schumi (for some unkown reason) is only few points ahead of the second driver in the league...

Then couple of laps before the finish line Schumi leads the final race and everybody is ready to cheer for his (I lost count) championship.... Not only that but Schumi is about to LAP Vilneauve (and his Sauber) and humiliate him... And then I can imagine a MAGIC moment.... In the time of Schumi ready to overtake Jaques to lap him, I can see Jaques doing a sudden turn of the steering wheel and throwing Schumi out of the race with a broken suspension!!!! And the 2nd driver gets the championship!!!!

That would be a great scenario for the return of F1 as a sport!!!

and some more news...

Official: Toyota signs Jarno Trulli

The Panasonic Toyota Racing team has today confirmed that Jarno Trulli will join the team as a race driver from 2005. The Italian driver signed a two-year contract on Tuesday 14 September at Toyota Motorsport's headquarters in Cologne, which will see him partner German driver Ralf Schumacher from next season.

Trulli will drive a Toyota F1 car for the first time at the Silverstone Circuit in Britain today, Thursday.

Jarno Trulli is one of only four drivers to have won a Grand Prix in 2004, having dominated the Monaco GP to take his debut race victory. In his eight seasons in Formula 1, Jarno has made four trips to the podium and scored two pole positions.

Toyota currently plans for Ricardo Zonta to drive the third car in Friday free practice sessions, as well as undertaking extensive test duties alongside Olivier Panis in 2005.

Ryan Briscoe will still be contracted to Toyota in 2005, but will not be a regular Panasonic Toyota Racing race or test driver. He will, however, continue to receive support from the team as he looks to find a race seat for next year.

Tsutomu Tomita - Team Principal commented: "It is no secret that we have been speaking with Jarno Trulli for some time about the possibility for him to join Panasonic Toyota Racing, but contrary to recent reports, we have only finalised contractual details this week. Jarno has really shown his maturity and all-round talent this season, both in qualifying and in races, and we believe that he will be the perfect team-mate to Ralf at Toyota from next season. On that note, I would like to set the record straight early and stress that there are no driver orders at Toyota; Ralf and Jarno will have equal number one status with us. We are also looking forward to Ricardo staying with the team in 2005 as our Friday driver at races. Along with Olivier, Ricardo has demonstrated a strong commitment and motivation to the team over the last two years. I firmly believe that both Olivier and Ricardo will excel in test and development roles with Toyota. With Ralf, Jarno, Olivier and Ricardo, I think that Panasonic Toyota Racing will have one of the strongest driver line-ups in Formula 1 for next season."
