A fiery encounter at Ibrox saw Rangers close the gap on city rivals Celtic with a 2-0 victory. 2 first half goals courtesy of a Novo penalty and a Prso header, were followed by the sending off of both Thompson and Sutton. Thompson for an alleged head butt on Lovendkrands, (who went down disgracefully easily) and Sutton for a second yellow for deliberate hand ball.

Posted Image

It has been reported that Lovenkrands was attacked in the tunnel at halftime by 2 Celtic players, which saw him miss the 2nd half.

It was a miracle no further reds were produced, with Novo and Camara particularly lucky to stay on the field. The nine man Celtic side managed to keep out Rangers for the entire 2nd half, but by this time the game was over.

Normal service resumed on the streets of towns across the west of Scotland (and Belfast I presume), where pitched battles took place throughout the evening.

A teenager's body was found behind Ibrox stadium in the early hours of Sunday morning, though police are yet to confirm a direct link to the match.

The police took the decision some years back to play matches at noon to avoid drunken behavior during games. This leaves the problem that fans have the entire day to drink following the game, with the trouble taking place away from the stadium later in the evening.

Is there a solution? I doubt it.

Inverness CT and Dundee United drew 1-1 in last night's rearranged fixture in front of a sparse crowd of just over 1,000.

The only positive aspect being that United move above city rivals Dundee on goal difference.

Rangers continued their recent run of good form, which has now seen 14 victories in 15 matches in all competitions. A 3-2 home win over Hearts was enough to see them leapfrog Celtic, who dropped two points away to struggling Dundee.

Could the tide be turning blue after all. But as Alex McLeish said "championships are not won in November". Keeps things interesting with no team running clear at the top.

In all the excitement of this week's Greek matches, I completely forgot to add the weekend's results, not to mention Tuesday's predictions.

Craig Brewster's first point in charge of Inverness saw Rangers drop to second place after only six days at the top. Celtic won a difficult encounter against the young Hibs side, who continue to impress under new boss Tony Mowbray.

Oh yes....... United moved back to the bottom of the table. My initial thought was that boss Ian McCall will be sacked should they lose at home to Kilmarnock on Saturday. But I've heard from a source at the club that McCall had already been offered

Celtic remain top over Christmas following their 1-0 home victory against Dundee United. An early Chjris Sutton header was enough to secure the points against a well organised United side who had keeper Tony Bullock in great form after a month out injured.

Rangers kept the gap to a single point with a 1-0 away victory at Kilmarnock. The goal came from ex Ajax striker Averladze, who looks set to leave Ibrox before the summer.

Inverness continue to climb the table, with a fine 2-1 away victory at Motherwell. At this rate, new manager Craig Brewster will struggle to get a game for his new club in January, when the transfer window frees him to play.

Wins again for both Rangers and Celtic, but result and performance of the weekend came at Easter Road where a Derek Riordan hat-trick gave Hibernian a 3-0 win over Kilmarnock. Leeds are the latest club to be linked with the 22 year old striker, with 22 goals this season. One for the future, but a move to a big club may not be too far off.

This weekend sees the most important Old Firm derby of the season, with Rangers going into the clash ahead on goal difference, having played one game less.

Rangers have not defeated Celtic at Parkhead for 5 years, but must take 3 points to take the upper hand in the league.

Sunday's match will see Old Firm debuts for Bellamy and Kyrgiakos infront of 60,000 fans.

Let the battle commence.

Last week cleared up the picture at the bottom of the table, this week should clear up the picture at the top.

My prediction: the tricolour to fly high, the union jack to be lowered at half-mast. ;)

PS. Any chance of two UEFA Cup spots going to Edinburgh?

My prediction would have been 3-1 to the Gers with Kyrgiakos first scorer from a corner, so am glad I didn't make it up to visit Mr Ladbroke, although a bet on a Rangers victory would still have been worthwhile.

A major talking point this morning is the missile throwing incident which left Fernando Ricksen requiring stitches to an eye wound. It was apparantly caused by a lighter thrown from the crowd. Something that was seen all too often at games accross the UK this weekend.

A full programme of matches will take place tonight, March 2nd:

Celtic v Dundee

Dundee Utd v Aberdeen

Dunfermline v Motherwell

Hearts v Rangers

Inverness CT v Hibernian

Livingston v Kilmarnock

Celtic face the easier of the matches involving the Old Firm when they face Dundee at Parkhead. Rangers have a difficult trip to Tynecastle to meet Hearts. Celtic will be looking to Hearts to take points from Rangers, which would give the Bhoys the upper hand in the SPL. They are currently 6 points behind Rangers, but have 2 matches in hand. Rangers have a far superior goal difference.

Rangers remain 4 points clear (but have played 2 matches more) following a 2-0 victory away to Dundee with late goals from Prso and Ricksen.

Sunday 24th April has been announced as the date for the final Old Firm match of the season, which will take place following the league splits into two 6 team groups after 16th April. The authorities decided to schedule the match as early as possible to avoid a repeat of the violent scenes at Parkhead in 1999 when Rangers won the league at the home of their rivals. Although this match will be regarded as the title decider, the championship should still be mathematically possible after the game.

Results of matches played on 12th April:

Inverness CT 1-0 Motherwell

Rangers 0-1 Dundee United

Dundee United last night moved off the bottom of the table after shocking leaders Rangers 1-0 at Ibrox last night. A goal after 7 minutes from Duff was the only goal of the match, although Rangers missed several clear chances through Prso, Novo and Averladze. United keeper Bullock made several outstanding saves, including a goal bound 18 yard volley from Kyrgiakos in the closing minute.

This was only United's fifth win of the season, but more remarkably, they are now unbeaten in their last 5 league matches with Rangers.

Inverness kept their hopes of a top 6 place (the league spilits at the weekend) alive by defeating Motherwell 1-0. They were looking to improve their goal difference, but couldn't add to the single goal.
