Greece to host Pro-Olympic tournament

Recommended Posts

Greece NT basketball team got a present this weekend since from the 2 countries,Puerto Rico and Greece that were the front runners for organizing this tournament,Greece came on top with a 13-5 vote in the FIBA meeting that took place in Chicago. This fact helps our chances of actually making it to China Olympics tremendously since we are going to be playing in our home with the support of thousands of fans and if we show up ready and play up to our high level,we will take 1 of the tickets.

No Greece goes to a playoff after that....in fact we have a tough time to qualify well likley have to play New Zealand (easy match), but then Slovenia to qualify...so qualifying wont be as easy as we expect...

How do we know which qualifyer well be (A, B, C)?

Were looking really bad, horrendous in the last Euro, and other teams just look so much stronger... Russia, Spain, Lithuania, USA, Argentina we cant beat....Its going to be a rough tournament this year...

Format

The teams will be divided into four groups (Groups A-D) for the preliminary round.

Round robin for the preliminary round; the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals. The last-placed team in each group are eliminated.

A single-elimination tournament will then be held; the quarterfinals pairings are:

A1 vs. B2

B1 vs. A2

C1 vs. D2

D1 vs. C2

The semifinal pairings will be A1/B2 vs. C1/D2 and B1/A2 vs. D1/C2. The semifinal winners are qualified for the Olympics. No championship game will be held.

The semifinal losers will play for the last Olympic qualifying berth.

From Fiba.com

Koufos gives thumbs-down to Greece for this summer

SALT LAKE CITY (FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament) - If all of Athens had hoped to see seven-footer Kostas Koufos with their own eyes, they’ll have to wait a while following the American-born player’s decision to spend this summer with the Utah Jazz instead of playing at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.

Panagiotis Yannakis had included the MVP of last year’s U18 European Championship in Madrid in his squad but Koufos, selected 23rd by the Jazz last week in the draft, will remain in the United States to prepare for his rookie season.

"For me, the priority's NBA," Koufos said in the Salt Lake Tribune.

"Always will be. Whatever the staff needs me to do to excel on the NBA level, I'm willing to do."

Had Koufos joined Yannakis’ preliminary squad and made the team, he would have played in front of sold-out arenas in Athens where the Greeks will take on Brazil and Lebanon in Group A.

Three places are up for grabs for the Beijing Games.

I guess the warm up games are starting now...

Greece are starting to look pretty good

Imo Greece should win this mini-tournament. The only temas that could scare greece are slovenia and croatia ( two teams that we barly beat in eurobasket) and maybe puerto rico/ brasil. Greece were horrible in 07 but my bet is they will bounce back.

the last 2 games (greece v ausy and v brazil) it seemed that the greeks were on holiday for 3/4s of the match. I mean they didnt play well at all!! but some how they started to play (maybe they borrowed the greek football team's good form switch) and inforced their dominance on the opposing team. I think at one point today greece had outscored Ausy 45-12 in the second half after being down 38-40 at half time. I think we'll see how serious they are against croatia but this whole format has me confused, how can the WC runners up not qualify for the olympics when in 2002 NZ semifinalists qualified for sydney olympics and 2006 WC. Maybe Oceania has a few handouts who knows??

I would love for Greece to PLay NZ, I am a "NZer" but i really dislike NZ basketball for not giving youth a chance and sticking with the same greatgrandfathers who took us through in 2002 (who were still too old then BTW)
