I wouldn’t say Greece are minnows, we have qualified for major tournaments, world cups and Euros and are one of ten countries to win the European Championship. A lot of good footballing countries can’t make the same claims.

I too thought after the last World Cup that we would qualify for the 2016 Euro and was thinking we would make the semis and then carry it over to the 2018 World Cup. Things have just gone sideways especially when Ranieri took over for Euro qualifying and Skibbes mess at the Nations League. Only positives over last four years is the away result vs Belgium and that the team managed to get to the playoff vs eventual World Cup runners up Croatia. Though the first leg vs croatia went all wrong due to Skibbes suspect lineup and FIFA dubious suspension of Manolas for the first match.

The past was a great time my friend.  But those years are gone now. We have actually turned into a minnow since then. Look at the teams that have won against Greece. It’s terrible the way it’s going. It needs to be corrected. Unfortunately, this mess may take a while to clean up.

Yup exactly, I was very optimistic for the upcoming years after that World Cup. I knew it would be a tough transition without Karagounis there but I definitely thought with our roster and the group we were handed for the 2016 Euro qualifiers Romania, N Ireland, Hungary, Finland, Faroes that Greece were a lock to finish in the top 2. Finishing last in that group and missing the 2016 Euros did immense damage to the team and they have not recovered since and winning matches that should be a given as was the case with Santos like vs Estonia, Faroes, Finland, Hungary etc. have become very tricky encounters.

After that World Cup I was stupid and told all my buddies that the way Greece was rising, we were gonna celebrate another major trophy in the next 10 years. What a dummy I was. Lol

It's very depressing J1078, I read since the 2016 Euro qualifiers the NT record in 41 matches is 13W 9D 19L. Just pathetic and most of the losses are to average or minnow teams aside from the loses to Belgium and Croatia.

I can accept a loss to Belgium like the 1-2 defeat in Athens but not to countries like Estonia, faroes, North Ireland, Hungary, Finland, Luxembourg, Saudi Arabia etc. I don't know what the problem is when they play these crap sides I remember Ranieri laughing in press conferences saying they will win and expect to win these games like the ones vs Finland, North Ireland and Faroe Islands only to come out totally flat. The mentality has to change, hopefully it will because when we played Belgium to a draw in Brussels and even the defeat in Greece the team looked more sharp and played with more purpose. Maybe vs the top countries in the upcoming Euro qualifiers we will see the same. I can only hope so.

Maybe Greece is losing to minnows because they are a minnow now.

  4. I’ll take Swiss Poland Netherlands maybe even Italy. Those teams I think could be had. No chance I’d take England. They might suck, but that’s a bad matchup. England’s speed would destroy perhaps the slowest team out there. The Greeks have a real hard time with faster less talented teams. Japan and South Korea come to mind.

Greece will be fine just had a run of bad luck. Not qualifying for the Euro 2016 was very tough since it was such an easy  group that Greece were given and more teams could qualify that cycle. Missing the last WCUP sucked but a lot of people said that Bosnia would best us for 2nd spot and we knew Belgium was always going to top the group. Losing to Croatia in the playoff was a blow but they are a quality side that went all the way to the final.

When a country has to qualify from Europe where there are many great footballing nations its going to be difficult especially for the World Cup. Its not like Greece is playing in CONCACAF vs totally weak teams and unlike Canada a country who cant qualify for a world cup for 32 years and has not even come close for 20 years that is disgraceful and worrisome. Greece will be back, the EPO, coach and coaches staff and most the players have to start getting better prepared for these upcoming matches starting in March.

Let’s not compare the 2 countries. Canada is horrible. But Canada is the only country in the world that has dominated their first sport. What Canada has done in hockey will never be done in any sport around the world by any country.

True, but team needs a lot of work.

Team lacks pace in key areas. Wingbacks aren’t fast enough. We need better options. These are important positions if we are going to score goals. Not enough players in the box when we get into dangerous positions. We make bad decisions going forward. Shoot when we should pass, shoot when we should cross. Pass when we should shoot. Forwards and striker are static a lot of the time. Team lacks belief and confidence going forward. Players don’t trust each other. Remember the Pelkas non pass to an open Fortounis vs Finland.

If you look at this game we could have created chances to walk the ball in. Sorry, but Bakakis is not very good at this level. Gianoulis didn’t take on one defender. Too scared to make a mistake. Tzimikas and Koutris are better but are still young. I think there are others who play in Europe that we need to look at. Greek SL is not a good standard. I think some of the guys playing in Holland, Belgium and Germany are better. We need to start looking outside SL for answers.

I couldn’t agree more.  SL is horrible my 70 year old dad could probably make a team. And lack of speed is a big issue. This may be the slowest team out there. Regardless of who plays.

Guys, I put a considerable amount of blame for this loss on Ange A. He took this game vs Estonia for granted and approached it like a friendly. It wasn't enough that the team was absolutely ravaged by injuries going into yesterday's match, but he decided to sit players like Vlachodimos, Fortounis, Torosidis, Koutris and Pelkas, suddenly send our only in-form striker in Koulouris down to play with the U21s, and, barring Sokratis and maybe Zeca, start our B/C team.

No, luck did not go our way whatsoever, but the decisions made by Ange leading up to this match, and the consequences of this pitiful loss, may realistically set Greece back years.

Sending Koulouris is a no brainer. That match is way more important than the Estonia match. I hate hearing about injuries and so forth. Every team has them. It’s Estonia we’re talking about. No excuses. None at all.

Picking the right players in the right positions is not brain surgery, or rocket science. I'm telling you that respectfully. It is not impossible coaching them. At this level, they are man managed mainly instead cause they are the elite.

This coach not learning from previous other coaches' clangers is no excuse. I honestly think he is on countdown to the end of the next Euros. First impressions count and tbh, his are not flattering already.

Let’s see how it goes today. And let’s see the upcoming qualifiers. Hopefully a win today will help.

basically, but it also means Greece could draw 2 very difficult teams and a 3rd team that would give us a hard time like a Serbia , Romania, Republic of Ireland, Turkey and so on instead of 2 difficult teams and a Minnow like Moldova, San Marino and so on...

Holy s%$#!. So that means we’re the minnow? Damn this is going to be hard. But at least we’ll watch some good games. And let’s not forget, greece play better against better teams. Never say never.

Jimmy boy, the last three coaches proved time and again their systems failed. This guy started with no wingers in the squad. The jury is out on Angelos already and if he doesn't identify shortfalls, as his predessessors , the countdown has already started, till he is out the door.

For me, there are people on this forum without coaching aspirations, that succeed in other areas of life that would perhaps do a better job quite frankly with the same resources..

Yeah and all of us could do better than brain surgeons, or nasa scientists too. If we were qualified enough to make those decisions, we wouldn’t be passing time by posting on here. We would have more important things to do. Don’t confuse you being a fan and carrying the team in your heart for knowledge. I’m telling you this respectfully. It’s a lot harder to do than you think.

  11. I don’t know. Fetfa and Donis are good technically for me but they seem to small And weak to me to be on the pitch at the same time. D is the strength of this team so try playing the guys that can play both ways other than one dimensional guys. But then again, that’s why we’re posting here and they’re coaching and playing there. They know way more than all of us put together.

I don't recall anyone saying "laz, Fetfa and Donis are the saviours" but simply I think people are fed up with playing the same guys with no results... And fyi you don't know if Donis and Fetfa wont workout because we haven't tried them together.. We no for sure that Pelkas and Mantalos are not the answer as they've played numerous games together and look at the results they have produced.. hopefully some younger guy that comes up can produce but until they do I think a good coach would try different guys if the current group are not producing.. Don t you?? But I always recall you saying that we wont be good unless we have a Renaldo or a Mbappe or Mesi… Sure having a superstar helps immensely but realistically in 2004 we beat Ronaldo, Nedved, Zidane, so as long as you have competent players with some skill that buy into a system you can actually be successful.. Korea beat Germany 2-0 in the world cup and I'm pretty sure Korea has no superstars.. Sweden got pretty far with NO superstars either...

He’s 1 and 0. Good enough for me

During the press conference today a reporter asked the coach "there has been a lot of talk on why you choose to play with three 10's against Finland exactly what Skibbe did?" Coach is answer " I don't recognize players by their number whether they are a 10 or a 9 or a 6 and I don't choose players based on that"... That is a horrible way to coach in my opinion.... I hope he wasn't series... Obviously the question was directed towards Pelkas and Mantalos playing on the wing...

That’s why he’s coaching and we’re in this chat room.

  14. You guys are never happy. If any of us could do better with the selections, we wouldn’t be on this forum. He hasn't Even coached a game yet and already here we go. Has it ever occurred to any of you that maybe, just maybe none of these players but 3 or 4 are any good anyway. We’re arguing because fetfatzidis isn’t on the team or lazaros? I can understand the arguing if Ronaldo or Mbappe we’re not called up to their teams. But those 2 aren’t even average players in world standards.

Yes, it may be ballsy move by EPO, but honestly Jimmyp, I can see why you are a rookie.

As an Australian Greek I take that as a bit offensive. Ange is no mug. He took an Australian team that qualified for a WC and got spanked 6-0 in consecutive friendlies and then had them lead 2-1 vs Holland in a world cup Group match, 6 months later. Holland were eventual runners up in the WC. Ange will go seek out and find Greek players you haven't heard of.

Also, he was born in Greece, played and coached youth teams at national level, coached clubs and a NT successfully and he can at least speak the language. And of course, he played and coached SM Hellas FC. Enough said.

I will say though, Paokara's analysis on p20 is a good read.

I’m 47. Far from a rookie. What I’m saying is if you want to compete with elite countries you throw out your budget and you go all out and hire a coach with credentials. A coach that had a great track record.

Im not against Australia, I have a lot of family there, but seriously all of us can coach them and win against the Maldives or Fiji. Now they’re part of Asia if I’m not mistaken and that pool isn’t that much better. Show me credentials like Rehagel. Ranieri was a disaster but he had a proven track record also. I hope I’m wrong but I doubt it
