  6. I just found out that the blue jersey was used I in 2001 in a Cup game against Markopoulos. It was the first time in PAO history I believe that we used a different color other then White or Green. Never was made available to the public and was only worn in that game. (Fillipidis Era)

  8. Mackinnon slams Greece as arrogant From correspondents in Hamamatsu, Japan August 21, 2006 AUSTRALIA veteran Sam Mackinnon has labelled Greece arrogant and aims to bring the European champion down a notch when it clashes at the world championships in Japan tomorrow. Greece has stormed to the top of Group C with two straight wins at Hamamatsu Arena and is heavily favoured to make it three from three tomorrow against an inconsistent Boomers outfit sitting 1-1 after two games. But Mackinnon has other ideas against a side ranked a strong medal contender. "The way they walk around the hotel and the way they are, they have an arrogance about them," Mackinnon told AAP. "They've been around for a while and don't really say anything to you. They just look at you. "We know what they think of us and that will be in the back of our minds. "But it doesn't mean anything if we don't go out there and play the way we have to to win." Australia made a great start by upsetting Brazil, but couldn't capitalise on a superb first half against Turkey in a disappointing loss yesterday. Mackinnon acknowledges the Boomers should still be undefeated, but feels there has been plenty of improvement. Australia also has recent history against Greece, losing 68-60 in a warm-up tournament in China a fortnight ago. "They're confident and are obviously going to be the favourites," Mackinnon said. "But we know we've gone to that next level of competing and executing, so we look forward to it. "I think teams do realise if they take us lightly we'll jump on them and hopefully bury them. "I think they'll be wary of us." The Australians have received little support in the stands to date, with only a sprinkling of compatriots making the trip to Japan. In contrast, there is a strong Brazilian presence in Hamamatsu and they were out in force in game one, while Turkey also enjoyed heavy support yesterday, including a loud section behind the baseline that came complete with Turkish chants and a drum. Goorjian is aware his team is considered lightweight in every sense, but it is spurring the Boomers towards their minimum goal of a place in the second round. That will be achieved with a single victory in any of the three remaining games against Greece, Lithuania and Qatar. "We're seen as nothing and we came into the tournament that way with that mentality, so we feed off this," he said. "Everyone cheering against us is good for us right now. We're just trying to get to that next round any way possible." The match commences at 4.30pm local time (5.30pm AEST). Cmon :gr: :gr: :gr: :gr: :nw:

  21. He played a handful of game for Hellas Melbourne as a guest player in 92 if my memory serves me well. ah re Stan you football encyclopedia, you B)
  22. I saw the game he played pretty bad but being his first real game its ok. He kept losing the ball and the commentators commented that his yet to get used to the EPL as its much more fast paced than the dutch league. That header could of made him a hero he had time and the height to score that. I have a feeling he'll score plenty of header cos of his height.
  23. Man City signs Greek striker Promising Giorgos Samaras moves to Premiership from Heerenveen in 8.8-mln-euro deal PAUL ELLIS/AFP Manchester City’s new signing, 20-year-old Giorgos Samaras (l), at yesterday’s news conference with manager Stuart Pearce. Manchester City has signed the highly rated young Greek striker Giorgos Samaras for 8.8 million euros and four-and-a-half years from Dutch side Heerenveen, the English Premiership club said yesterday. City, currently 10th in the 20-team Premiership, needed to double its previous offer before striking a deal with the Dutch first-division club for the 20-year-old Greek player. An agreement was reached last Saturday, and Samaras passed his medical on Monday. Despite the club’s eagerness to sign the Greece under-21 striker, Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce warned that Samaras would not walk straight into the first team. He has been included in the squad for today’s home match against Newcastle United. “He’ll be in and fighting for a place. He’s got to join the squad running and force me to pick him,” said Pearce, who offloaded striker Robbie Fowler back to hometown club Liverpool last week. Nonetheless, Pearce told Manchester City’s website yesterday that he had high hopes for Samaras. “It’s the overall package that you get with him,” Pearce said. “He’s 20 years old, we feel that we have someone at the right end of their career, someone who will mature and get better and better. He’s a good footballer, he has a solid background and I think I played against his father in the Greek national side,” Pearce noted. “Talking with him, he’s a very level-headed lad, he knows what he wants out of football and he’s very career-minded, which is a good thing. I think this football club for him at this stage of his career is a great move, for him as well as it is for us.” Giorgos Samaras’s father, Australia-born Yiannis Samaras, also a striker, had played with Panathinaikos and OFI during the late 1980s and 1990s. Earlier this month, Arsenal was reportedly thinking about signing Samaras. But Heerenveen had apparently rejected the major London club’s reported 5.6-million-euro offer as insufficient. At the time, Heerenveen’s team manager had told BBC Sport that Arsenal was not the only club interested in signing Samaras. (Kathimerini, Reuters, AFP) Did Samaras dad play in Australia? Any relation to Protathlitis7 ;) ?
  24. this was posted on the Man City website: For those not familiar with new signing Georgios Samaras, we've done the hard work for you and compiled ten facts on the Greek hitman. Samaras becomes the first Greek player to pull on the Blue shirt. At 6'4", Georgios brings height and presence to the City forward line. He will wear the number 20 shirt. Samaras was born on 21/02/85 in Heraklion, Crete. Less famous ex-Heerenveen players include Ruud van Nistlerooy, while ex-Blue Paul Bosvelt still plays for the Dutch club. Was on OFI Crete's books until transferred to Heerenveen in 2001. Made his Heerenveen debut on Oct 26, 2002 in a 2-0 win over Excelsior coming on as a sub in the 76th min. Last game was a 0-0 draw with Sparta Rotterdam on Jan 21 and in 88 games for the Dutch outfit he scored 25 goals. Helped Heerenveen into last 32 of the UEFA Cup, scoring in the tie against Levski in December, and to sixth in the Eredivisie. Georgios' dad, Giannis, is Heerenveen's technical director and said earlier this month when interest started: "I know that many scouts come to see the games of Heerenveen, from England, from Germany, from Italy." At the time Arsenal had initially wanted Samaras before City's interest became apparent. Looks like they are talking him up  Congrats!!!
