:gr: There was a definite touch of class about his volley, but so too the coolness that accompanied his second finish, after he beat Carroll to Corradi's through-ball.

Fanis's hair is rapidly migrating from the top of his head to the back...
By the way, in the parts of Greece where I come from (Epirus coast), we call this particular hair growth pattern a "kosa" (

BRAVO big win today - will certainly finish the year in the top 10 - what a huge accomplishment :gr:
If it wasn't for injuries and the clay season he would be top 5 for sure
Plus he is incredibly popular amoungst Greeks and nonGreeks for his smile, persona, fire and sportsmanship - very proud to have himrepresent us
BRAVO MARCO
-
Bravo pathyia - Silver is great - we were outplayed today, maybe a little down after the US win and Spain is a great team
Anyway - beautiful tournament :gr: :gr: :gr: :gr: :gr:
More great Greek sport memories :gr:

SI is an AMERICAN magazine that pretends to cover the worldOne USA reporter (I believe it was one of those SI luminaries) was annoyed that the Greek reporters cheered so loudly and jumped up and down. 'Objective journalism at its best', he noted sarcastically.
He also commented that the reporters kissed the Greek players, and he took the trouble to specify in parentheses 'on the cheek'.
Another SI guy to his credit, suggested that NBA boss David Stern stop calling the league champs 'world champs'. Good point!
They care about the Tour de France or Olympics when their juiced athletes win a medal
Objectively they failed to mention the Greeks as a TOP 8 team in their preview to the games. Their world coverage was based on names they recognized from the NBA or from past Olympics.
Lithuania is their favourite because the Greatful Dead sponsored them in th 1990s. No kidding. To put the effort into researching these games would be much too much to ask.
Their reporting about the last game is centered on excuses (Sofo's moving picks the Greek media) not on how Greece won the game (The US lost it according to them)
Anyway - at least the players were classy - Battier had good things to say and speaking of Sofo :
"We knew he was good," Chris Bosh said, "but we didn't know he was that good."
-
I don't think this changes anything really too much- may actually make thing more difficult. A team can get up for one game without a player. If this injury happened at the start of the tourney I'm sure they wouldn't be here - but with one left. Plus they closed out Argentina without himhttp://japan2006.contrasport.com/teams/Spa...ain/128276.html
Gasol is out...however Spain is still a team that will be incredibly difficult with or without Gasol...
Plus we are down Zisis (I know Gasol is a NBA superstar)
Garbajosa is a stud too - but we should have an advantage up front - Big Sofo and Papadopoulos outplayed the US
:gr: :gr:
-
For North Americans - we should give credit where credit is due the ESPN2 announcers were (at least the color commentator) the least pro_American knowledgeable announcers I'ver ever heard from the US. Kept saying how great the players and coaches were throughout the game and then again during the Spain-Argentina match. He pretty much refused to call this an upset.
Again as for the game -
If you didnt see it we outscored them by 18 in the middle quarters and quite easily held on for the win
Spanoulis was a stud - but really singling out one player is wrong - this wicked TEAM shot 62%. The way we ran the pick and roll it was though the American's were introduced to something from a different planet.
Amazing amazing game :gr:

:gr: :gr:Congratulations to all Greece!!!
Hope Yuo'll become world champions!!!

I was scared to jinx usWhat's up guys, no comments?

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHPoor Zisis
How it happened (under the dirty player Anderson Varejao). He NEVER apologized for his action. He walks away unpunished:

Terrible foul

It will come down to who dictates thier style on their opponent.
BUT we don't play slow plodding ball like others think - we play the best defence I have seen at any level of basketball- it is amazing, swarming but not too risky.
The US's small lineup has many good ball handlers - so if they go with James, Wade and Anthony we must beat them down with Paps and Big Sofo.
The point guard comparison will be huge
Paul and Hinrich had O turnovers today - that number has to be a lot higher
We definately have a chance
Sikose To :gr: :gr: :gr:

:LOL:o filos mas o tourkous dn milaei, katse na nikisoume aurio emeis kai tha tou po ego :P
Ah re megale
Anyway the big wins scare me a little - Argentina and Spain are pretty awesome

SI is not a global magazine - they cover US sports well but their opinion on the Worlds is uselessSports illustrated Top 16 (2nd round play). Greece is ranked 8th?!?!:

Tony Parker's take on the FIBA WC (has mixed feelings about Greek team):

I'm going to have to agree with some of you here - Turkey looks better than both France (without Parker) and a so-so German team. Plus they did beat Lithuania.
But what the hell do I know - I thought Angola would beet the French
From what I've read and seen so far Sofoklis MUST be on his way to the NBA - they say he was too tough for Ming, who is a load himself with that big lower body. Big Sofo's stats per minute are ridiculously awesom so far:
34 minutes
29 points
He has not miss a shot yet from the field!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Theodoros Papaloukas had 19 points for Greece, which committed just three turnovers while forcing China (2-4) into 24. Greece overcame a terrible first quarter with an impressive third period to advance.
Yao Ming, the 7-foot-5 center who plays for the Houston Rockets, had 10 points and eight rebounds for China. Yao, who entered the game as the tournament's leading scorer with a 28.4 average, was 3-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
China had six points and nine turnovers in the third quarter. Greece closed the period with a 21-2 run.

My top 8
1 - US
2- Spain
3 - Greece :gr:
4 - Argenitina
5- Turkey
6- Germany
7 - Lithuania
8 - Angola
Fianlly got to actually watch some ball - from Blue and White - Canadian TV is horrible.
Those Australia and Turkey games were awesome for the Greek team.
Both those teams are talented but I think what we saw was that the Greek team has the confidence and experience that these other teams are missing.
Spain seems to be on a mission but I wonder if their basketball team chokes like the soccer team  we'll see vs Lithuania
-
You sound like one of those guys who is accused of racism but to defend themselves they say 'I have many friends who are black, or Jewish, or...'
And who's controversializing? Better yet what's 'controversializing'. I agree with you on one thing, man, your English is pretty bad.
Hey, pop quiz who won '3rd title' (as you call it) in 1994 WC? See, nobody remembers who gets 3rd place, only the champ!
classless
You make fun like the white trash that ridiculed the Greeks that moved to the Americas -dropi sou

Wicked :gr: :gr: :gr: :gr: :gr:
Big Sofo had a huge game from what I read - any comments from anyone who saw the game?
China -they must be pumped after qualifying - but I must admit I am happier to see them than the Peurto Ricans
Yao is truely awesome to shut him down Lazaros and Sofo will have to be tough, although I think he will do well against us no matter what we do- but the rest of team??????
I can only guess that their guard play must be weak and this is our strength so we should do well - althought they will have the homecourt advantage I guess, being Asian.
Weird Spanoulis vs his future teamateshould be interesting
Really at this stage all 16 teams are quality - although I can't see the Africans getting much further - Spain - Serbia should be good so should Italy - Lithounia nd Slovania - Turkey
Avtually didn't Slovania beat us in the EUROs last time around - if so good not to see them
-
Greece is better than LithinuaniaHere's my top 10 basketball teams in the world
1. USA
2. Argentina
3. Spain
4. Lithuania
5. Greece
6. Italy
7. Serbia
8. France
9. Turkey
10. Germany
The rest looks ok
-
What a wicked TEAM boys - one more win and we are sure to stay away from the Italians and US in round 2 - Slovania is overrated I think and screw the PRicans.
:gr: :gr: :gr:
-
Fasoulas was a lookerTwo Kypelakia! :D
Turks are tough boys
-
Still haven't seen a game - thank RAPTORS TV for showing US 3 times yesterday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
But from what I've read it looks like a repeat of EURO - total team effort - I really like our chances
The US and Argentina are the favourites as I see it
Then we are at the top of the next group with the remainder of the European teams (Italy, Germany, Turkey and Spain in particular)
Zito :gr:
-
we won by 20 :gr:
No complaints warranted
Look at Serbia, even Venezuala losing today
20 pts was the biggest margin of the night I think
