  1. Here is the full Greece 23-man squad for the 2014 World Cup:

Goalkeepers: Orestis Karnezis (Granada), Panayiotis Glykos (PAOK) and Stefanos Kapino (Panathinaikos)

Defenders: Costas Manolas, Jose Holebas (both Olympiakos), Sokratis Papastathopoulos (Borussia Dortmund), Vangelis Moras (Verona), Giorgos Tzavellas (PAOK), Loukas Vyntra (Levante) and Vassilis Torosidis (Roma).

Midfielders: Alexandros Tziolis (Kayserispor), Andreas Samaris, Yiannis Maniatis (both Olympiakos), Costas Katsouranis (PAOK), Giorgos Karagounis (Fulham), Panayiotis Tachtsidis (Torino), Yiannis Fetfatzidis (Genoa), Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Panayiotis Kone (both Bologna)

Strikers: Dimitris Salpingidis (PAOK), Giorgos Samaras (Celtic), Costas Mitroglou (Fulham) and Fanis Gekas (Konyaspor).

  2. Not bad for a year's worth of games, but I would take PAOK as the best for 2014 with Panathinaikos a close second, with a very strong finish.

Let's not forget that they (PAOK) played decimated against you (key players unjustifiably penalized for previous game against Olympiakos) at the Greek cup final. And on top of that they started the Super League playoffs having a deficit in points.

But I agree 100% with your second sentence, that "cultivating young talent that really wants to give 100% is the best recipe for success. At least in countries like Greece."

Good luck to your team at next fall's Champions League tournament.

  3. Greece have announced their 30-man provisional squad that will be representing the nation in the FIFA World Cup 2014.

Midfielders: Alexandros Tziolis (Kayserispor), Andreas Samaris (Olympiakos), Kostas Katsouranis (PAOK), Giorgos Karagounis (Fulham), Panagiotis Tachtsidis (Torino), Sotiris Ninis (PAOK), Ioannis Fetfatzidis (Genoa), Kostas Fortounis (Kaiserslautern), Lazaros Christodoulopoulos (Bologna) Panagiotis Kone (Bologna).

  4. Does the right to "free speech" exist in this case, an athletic event?

I don't think professional athletes have such rights. They surrender those rights as soon as they sign a contract, on the dotted line. Their actions and/or words are subject to the league's rules of conduct. At least that's the way it is in the US. Without being 100% certain, I suspect the same rules would apply to UEFA and FIFA.
  5. Greek football federation announced Friday a restructuring of the top leagues starting next season with the Super League expanding from 16 to 18 teams. Read more...

Every couple of years or so, the Greek league keeps switching things - reshuffling and spinning thing around. Probably so everbody stays perpetually confused.

I don't think it's going to make much of a difference in terms of quality football.

And honestly, I don't understand why they keep switching things around every couple of years.

  6. I wonder Gekas is a very good finisher or Turkish Leaue is not so quality?

Gekas has been the top goalscorer of the Greek League and the Bundesliga in previous seasons. He was the top goalscorer of the Europe section of 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification for scoring ten goals in Greece's successful qualifying campaign.

    From Wikipedia:

During the 2006–07 season VfL Bochum was again fighting against relegation, but within a short period Gekas became one of the stars of the team and very popular among the fans. They called him the "Greek god" and his goals were celebrated with Sirtakis. Coach Marcel Koller accurately described him in November 2006 as their "life insurance", as Bochum not only avoided relegation, but also secured their place in the Bundesliga quite a few matchdays before the last, mainly due to Gekas' goals. He went on to finish the season as top scorer in the Bundesliga, with a final tally of 20 goals.

    Need more proof?

    He's a gun for hire.
