New Greek Tv Coming To Rcn Cable, Adding Star Programming

Recommended Posts

I found this press release from August on New Greek TV's website. They have started airing STAR programing (now that the new TV season has begun) in addition to the programing they currently air from SKAI and EPSILON channels. It also says that they plan to launch on RCN Cable sometime in September.

Great move for New Greek TV to expand carriage, I have always wondered why they don't convert this channel into a national service and make it available across the USA in all areas where there are Greek communities?!  Interesting that RCN is adding NGTV but not Alpha Sat, which would probably attract more subscribers than NGTV will?!

As for the programming, I wonder how much programming they air/will air from each channel?!  I think an omnibus channel like New Greek TV has created is the best option for these niche services, none of these 3 channels (Skai, Star, Epsilon) have enough programming IMO to sustain and warrant launching a full channel.  It will be interesting to see how many subscribe to NGTV once it launches on RCN?!  I wonder what other providers NGTV might look to launch on, Cablevision or Comcast perhaps?!

Cable seems to be lagging behind in terms of the number of international services they offer.  I think as far as the Greek channels go, the following should be added:

Comcast- MEGA Cosmos, Alpha Sat, expand coverage of ANT1 Satellite

Cablevision- Alpha Sat

FiOS TV- MEGA Cosmos, Alpha Sat

Time Warner- MEGA Cosmos, Alpha Sat

RCN- Alpha Sat

It seems that the new owners are much more ambitious in this nature. I think Cablevision is the next natural fit for them if they want to widely serve their core New York metro market. It may also de facto end up on Comcast if their buyout of Time Warner goes through. The question at that point would be if Comcast would expand it to more markets. They have limited ANT1 Satellite to the San Fransisco area, and they are notorious for carrying certain channels in certain markets only.
