Lowy flags expansion By Jackie Epstein April 30, 2006 FOOTBALL Federation Australia chairman Frank Lowy has been buoyed by support for Australia's match against Greece next month, and has foreshadowed the formation of new A-League teams in Sydney and Melbourne. Lowy said he wanted to expand the competition from eight to 12 teams. "We want a competition that will have approximately 12 teams," Lowy said. "So, we have eight now and we need two other centres. And then Sydney and Melbourne will be on the agenda." Football will take its "fair share of spectators" in Melbourne, he said, pointing to the sellout against Greece on May 25. But he is adamant a new national coach to replace Guus Hiddink will not be signed until after the World Cup finals. Former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier is believed to be the front-runner. Lowy will head overseas for talks this week. "We have an ambition to appoint a well-known international-experienced coach, and we will do that," Lowy said. "There are a number of international coaches who are interested to come to Australia. There is a kind of pizazz about Australia around the world now. "Us beating Uruguay was a big deal and we kind of put our flag up." Lowy also said: HE wants Australia to host a World Cup finals. HE held grave concerns for the survival of the A-League clubs before signing a lucrative TV deal with Fox Sports last week. HE will continue at the helm of the FFA for another four years, until the 2010 World Cup finals in South Africa, when he will be 79. HE was non-committal about the future of FFA chief executive John O'Neill, saying talks would be held after the World Cup finals in Germany. HE wants football to grow in Asia now that Australia has joined its confederation. Lowy said the plan was for A-League and international games to be played in Asia. As far as another sydney team is conerned, the closest to an "olympic" team being present would be via Nick Politis. Though, it would seem a western sydney team would be the best option for the a-league, im sure nick politis would like an eastern suburbs team... panatha_boy Posted June 2, 2006 Share Posted June 2, 2006 savas is right. they will never allow any greek, or any different nationality teams in the A-League. if they did, it would defeat the purpose of the A-League. its sad even thinking about it, because say if that south or olympic did come back in the big league, imagine the crowds that they will pull in. imagine bob jane full again, 8-10 thousand, just like the old times. unfortunately, doesnt look promising though. i guess that they look at all aspects, including crowd trouble. the police probably cant be bothered with us and our hooligans. oh well, cant do much about it. SO IT WOULD NEVER HAPPEN - NO MATTER HOW MUCH $$$ YOU WAVE AT THEM !! I WOULD RATHER WATCH SYDNEY OLYMPIC AND HEIDELBERG ALEXANDROS IN THEIR STATE COMPETITIONS RATHER THAN THE 'A LEAGUE' STUFF !! ....
