Magnificent Seven: 7-1

23.08.2003

Despite going 1-0 down early on to the visitors, we came back in spectacular style to win 7-1 against Elazığspor in front of a passionate crowd.

Christoph Daum kept the side that beat Trabzonspor 1-0 last week, including Mahmut who kept out Erhan at left back.

Pierre van Hooijdonk came extremely close to giving us the lead, as his freekick rebounded of the stanchion in the 5th minute. Elazığspor looked to break on the counter attack and nearly took their chance in the 8th minute with Eser, who`s shot went out off the upright.

Effa`s header onto a corner kick gave Elazığspor a shock lead in the 12th minute, going against the run of play.

After missing a clear chance with Yusuf, the equaliser came bizzarely in the 22nd minute. Bekir struck the ball a metre off the line to clear, only for the ball to come back off Tuncay and into the goal.

Until the 40th minute, a hurdle of missed chances summarised the game for Fenerbahçe. Elazığspor were inches away from regaining the lead too, as İlker`s cross-come-shot ended up bouncing off the crossbar and back into play.

But van Hooijdonk scored the pivotal goal in the game in the 41st minute, with a firm placed shot into the bottom corner onto Tuncay`s pass in the area. Four minutes later Mahmut`s excellent cross from the left was met by Tuncay who headed in from close range, 3-1.

The second half was dominated by Serhat`s misses, but also another four goals one of which belonged to the unlucky Serhat.

Van Hooijdonk`s shot from close range was parried by the keeper in the 48th minute while both Serhat and Yusuf scrambled a two-on-one situation in the 52nd.

With half-an-hour to go, Aurelio scored after dribbling the ball from midfield and striking a low shot, 4-1.

The crowd were asking for the fifth, and it came from Serhat, who was obviously frustrated after missing many clear opportunities. His volley from a narrow angle onto Selçuk`s searching ball went in off the keeper in the 70th minute, 5-1.

Serhat turned assister ten minutes later, crossing to Tuncay who was unmarked and calmly managed to head the ball in to make it 6-1.

Tuncay wasn`t contempt with a hat-trick and the festival continued, this time involving substitute Semih. In stoppage time, Semih squared to Tuncay who converted easily, putting the finishing touch on a goal-feast.

After the win against Trabzon, a fixture that we have traditionally struggled with not to mention the fact that we lost our opener against Istabul, it was imperitive we got maximum points against Elazig. However, unlike the Trabzon game, we needed a good performance too in order to rekindle the fans faith in the side and make a statement to the critics who wrote us off after the just the first game! I will talk about the critics a later on...

The fans turned up in their thousands and a brand new chant hit the terraces. The lise faithful sang on the top of their lungs something along the lines of,

"Hep destek tam destek verdik sizlere,

adamiz cikti teroristlere

Terorist degiliz taraftariz biz

Fenerbahcemiz icin caninmizi veririz" (not sure the last sentace is right so don't quote me

The song basically translates as a protest to the comments of Trabzon's chairman Ozkan Sumer who had branded Fener fans as terrorists...

The game kicked off and you could feel a sense of purpose to Fenerbahce. The players looked hungry to set the record straight that the istanbul match was a one off. They wanted the league to know that contrary to recent form Sukru Saracoglu is not an arena where away teams can take points from at will. By the fifth minute, Fener had already seen a Serhat miss a one-on-one, Pi-air have a thunderbolt freekick from 35 yards crash against the underside of the bar, and a decent shout for a penalty turned down by the referee. However in the 7th minute Eser was through on goal with Elazig's first attack and missed an open goal and in the 11th minute, Effa put the away side ahead with a soft goal from a corner kick. Once again a few groans started to surface, the feeling of "not again" was beginning to take centre stage....

The next 9 minutes were shaky, until the moment of good fortune that changed everything. Tuncay won the ball and passed it to Serhat who in turn closed in on goal and tried to play it back to him. However, his pass was poor and the defender had a easy chance to clear the ball. Tuncay never gave up and closed him down... The result? The ball rebounded off him and into the net.... from minute 20 to 40 Elazig hit the bar with a speculative cross and Effa almost had Tuncay's fortune but Recep saved well at the foot of the post. On 43, a counter attack with Yusuf, Tuncay and PVH ended with the big dutchman rifling home the all important 2nd goal. Two minutes later Tuncay headed home Mahmut's cross and it was game over.....

The second half was one way traffic ending with another 4 goals but in all honesty could have been 10 - no exaggeration!? Tuncay ended the night on 4, whilst Aurelio got the mark and Serhat also got a confidence boosting goal too. Especially as he was guilty of missing easier ones then he scored!! PVH also had a valid goal over ruled as not crossing the line, when it did... But we'll let it go on this occasion

Going back to the critics... They were having a field day when we lost to Istanbul saying same old Fener. They masked our win at Trabzon by focusing solely on the events on the terraces. You would have thought that a 7-1 win would get a good word out of them. Yeah right?! Instead they commented on Elazig being very poor and how any other decent team would have at least 10 past them..... Well, why don't they???

Wanted to ask you guys for some time now and I kept forgetting...

Fener looks strong and expected to be strong. Yet in the openning Day one of the Championship they showed a terrible face.

Suddenly I see on the news the next day that the day befor e the match the WHOLE TEAM was celebrating the marriage of Erdogan's son until late!

If I understood corectly, of course, wouldn't this be agood reason why the team was unrecognisable? And how could the club allow something like this?

I mean I understand why te team has to stand by the primeminister but shouldn't there be the rational sporting prerequisited limit concerning the plaers (at least! ) ?

Opinions?

As far as I'm aware, the players left the celebrations early on and not all of them had turned up in any case. Cristophe Daum would definately not allow them to party in to the early hours prior to a match. After all, gone are the magazine type programme footage showing our player clubbing. A scene we were accustomed to on a regular basis courtesy of players such as Yusuf and Serhat.

The closeness with the primeminister comes from his openess of supporting Fenerbahce. He is in constant correspondence with Aziz Yildirim getting regular updates about the team and can be seen at Saracoglu every so often.

Our poor start to the season has as much to do with us underestimating Istanbulspor as it has with their comendable start to the season. They have a maximum of 9 points from 3 games (only conceeding one goal) and look a solid side. With hindsight Fener should have paid them greater respect, but the beating they gave us served a good lesson. It made us wake up and realise that despite what we think, we are beatable and gave us the reality check we needed. After that, we beat Trabzon away for the first time in 7 years mainly due to a tactical warfare, and then convincing hammered Elazig with extraordinary hunger. In years gone by, we would have approached a game such as this with the attitude that we'll win regardless and end up with a 2 or 3 gaol margin at best....
