British Grand Prix

The organisers of the British Grand Prix will come up with stronger safety measures while preparing for the race on Sunday. This comes as a result of today's explosions in the centre of London. Immediately, the operators in Silverstone reacted to the attacks on the capital and discussed measures with the police in a crisis meeting. A statement will be issued later today.

"Of course we are warned and will do everything that is possible for safety. However, there is no reason to panic," Silverstone spokesman John Hurton said. The Grand Prix is this weekend's largest event in Great Britain. The 11th race of the year has been sold out for weeks, around 100,000 spectators are expected at the track.

A lap of Silverstone

McLaren Mercedes test driver Pedro de la Rosa describes a typical lap of the Silverstone circuit which will host this weekend's British Grand Prix for which team mate Kimi Raikkonen is favourite for victory.

"A flying lap of Silverstone begins with the extremely fast and challenging Copse Corner," de la Rosa explains. "You arrive at the right hander at 290km/h, before dabbing the brakes, with your speed dropping slightly to 265km/h in sixth as you swing through the bend, which is off-camber at the exit."

"A short burst of power takes you to one of the best complex of corners we have at any Grand Prix track, the Maggots-Becketts-Chapel S-bends. You have to be careful as you reach Maggots as this is where you drive past the pit exit, however throughout the complex you maintain speeds of 210km/h to 285km/h as you take the sequence of right and left flicks flat out, before being swung onto the fastest section of the track, Hanger straight."

"Taken flat out with a top speed of 305km/h in sixth gear, this long blast leads to Stowe. Due to the late nature of the apex you are braking all the way into the corner, flicking down the gears to 180km/h to negotiate the right-hander. The worst thing you can get here is understeer as it will affect your lap time a lot in that particular corner."

"You then roll out into a very straight forward exit along Vale that takes you down into Club, reaching 280km/h before braking for the long right-hander. You can develop a bit of oversteer here, as you accelerate through the corner reaching 210km/h."

"Then there is a straightforward acceleration from second to sixth gear out of Club corner which has been made easier by traction control. Then you go down the short straight to the left of Abbey corner, which is taken in third gear, at 120km/h, has a very fast entry and is a good place for overtaking."

"There is a short exit before the flick right of Farm, and you then go up and over the hill into Bridge corner, which is taken flat at 245km/h in fifth gear."

"You then enter the Stadium Complex and some of the best overtaking opportunities on the track. It starts with a quick entry into Luffield in fourth gear. It's quite fun to drift the car out there and it tends to dance around with the back end."

"You come out of Luffield and get on the brakes straight away for the tight left of Priory, which is taken at 155km/h, and is immediately followed by the 88km/h second gear tight left of Brooklands, which sees you steer the car through 180-degrees."

"The final corner in the complex is Luffield. Entering this long right hander your speed is around the 160km/h mark in third gear, dropping to 104km/h in the same gear as you exit. The sweeping right of Woodcote is the final corner, you accelerate through the two apexes of the bend as you swing back round onto the pit straight to begin another lap of Silverstone."

Ferrari 'on way back' - Brawn

'Michael Schumacher beats all rivals in the 2005 Chinese grand prix.' It's the kind of headline Ross Brawn expects in the second half of what has been a miserable season so far for the reigning constructors' champ.

"Our ability to improve is larger than the other teams," said Ferrari's technical director Ross Brawn. "That is because we are behind, but we are not too far behind. We can close the gap," he told Gazzetta dello Sport.

Brawn admits that most of Ferrari's troubles came in not adapting as well as its rivals to the new regulations.

Indicating the motivation to recover, though, test driver Luca Badoer - although just four days separated the French and British grands prix - completed a three day test run at Monza on Wednesday. Brawn said: "Now we're coming up again. The second half of the season should be better."

The Englishman admits that lead driver Michael Schumacher has been 'frustrated' with the F2005 package's lack of winning pace. "We would be worried if he were not," Ross, however, explained. "It shows he is still hungry -- it's just the nature of a champion."

Alonso steals pole in Silverstone thriller

Fernando Alonso snatched pole position from Kimi Raikkonen in a thrilling climax to qualifying for the British Grand Prix. Jenson Button qualified third, but will start the race from the front row of the grid as Raikkonen will drop ten places on the grid following an engine change.

Following his hydraulics failure in the French Grand Prix, Juan Pablo Montoya was out very early in the session. Rumours in the pit lane suggested that McLaren would run the Colombian light on fuel in a bid to guarantee a front-row slot from where he can control the race and give Raikkonen a better chance of recovering from his ten place engine change penalty.

Montoya clocked a 1m20.382s lap which was good enough until Jenson Button came out, the seventeenth runner in the session put in a fantastic lap, particularly in the final two sectors to bump Montoya from the top of the time sheets by 0.15s. The crowds and BAR Honda garage erupted in cheers - but the session was not over yet.

Michael Schumacher was next out and pushing his Ferrari to its absolute limits. The Italian team has struggled so far this weekend and Schumacher ran slightly wide trying so hard in the middle sector and even wider in the final part of the lap only managing to qualify tenth fastest.

Kimi Raikkonen was next, the Finn knew he would suffer a ten-place grid penalty and was giving it everything on his flying lap. Raikkonen was dominant, filled with frustration at his engine problem this morning the Finn snatched pole from Button by almost 0.3s - laying down the gauntlet to his championship rival Fernando Alonso.

Alonso could happily settle for beating Button - knowing Raikkonen would be demoted ten grid slots - but the championship leader would not settle for second best instead snatching pole from Raikkonen in the last seconds of the session by 0.027s.

Bearing in mind Raikkonen's penalty, Alonso will start first ahead of Button, Montoya, Trulli, Barrichello, Fisichella, Sato, Ralf and Michael Schumacher and Villeneuve rounding off the top ten. Raikkonen will start tomorrow's race from twelfth, one place higher than he did in France when he eventually finished the race in second.

Montoya takes maiden win for McLaren

Juan Pablo Montoya won his first race for McLaren Mercedes after snatching the lead from Fernando Alonso at the start. Championship leader Alonso came home in second place ahead of Kimi Rai

It was the hottest day of the weekend so far with blue skies and strong sunshine pushing air temperature up to 27 degrees Centigrade. At the start Montoya muscled past Alonso at on the entry to Maggots to take the lead on the very first lap while team mate Raikkonen had already made his way up to eighth.

Down the field Takuma Sato had stopped at the back of the grid as he came around on the parade lap and the safety car was deployed to give marshals a chance to remove the stricken BAR.

After one lap the safety car came in and Raikkonen set about taking down Michael Schumacher but the pair were held up behind the Toyota of Jarno Trulli. Raikkonen could do nothing about Schumacher until the first round of pit stops when he stayed out on track a couple of laps longer and managed to get past the German on fuel strategy.

Just before his first pit stop, Raikkonen found himself right behind Montoya and Alonso who had both pitted and fought for the lead side-by-side when Alonso came out of the pits. Raikkonen was on a mission and blasted past Alonso on the entry to Stowe corner before diving into the pits at the end of the lap for his first scheduled stop.

After the first round of pit stops Montoya was still in the lead ahead of Alonso and Fisichella who passed Button during the pit stops. Kimi Raikkonen was fifth but lapping a second faster than anyone else on track and gaining on the BAR Honda. Raikkonen had to stare at Button's rear wing until lap 44 when the British driver pitted.

Meanwhile Giancarlo Fisichella had caught right up with his team mate until the Italian stalled on his final pit stop on lap 46. Fisichella's blunder let Kimi Raikkonen through into third. Meanwhile Alonso stayed out on track until lap 48 for a very short final fuel stop but Montoya stormed through to resume the lead.

Alonso was not about to give up though and started pushing Montoya for the victory, just one second behind. But the Spaniard soon realised there was nothing he could do to stop a determined Montoya from taking his first win for McLaren Mercedes.

Kimi Raikkonen came home in third, setting the fastest lap of the race on the final lap - making his point that had it not been for his engine penalty, this would have been his weekend.

Giancarlo Fisichella came home in fourth but could have had a podium had he not stalled during his pit stop. Jenson Button scored some more points for fifth, but missed out on the podium he so dearly wanted at his home race.

Ferrari claimed sixth and seventh, but were a full 1m15seconds behind eventual winner Montoya. Ralf Schumacher claimed the final point for Toyota in eighth.

kkonen, who battled up from twelfth on the grid.
