The evidence gathered from the last 2 friendlies is that Greece will most likely play 3 games only in EURO2008.

Greece lost to Holland 4-0 before Euro 2004 and look what happened...

I hope that you can prove me wrong plato-ny. I hope I can prove me wrong.

Here is the article by Giorgos Helakis about the friendly against Armenia and his further comments about the team (in between I put my comments-in English):

Otto is lucky (again). Pogrebnyak will most likely not feature (and if features not fully fit) against us. Sweden also have their problems. Igniesta and Torres have also their own problems.

Someone in this forum said recently that God is with us. You know what? I believe HE is!!!

I don't know man. I was talking with Poseidon today and he said that he is certain that Zeus doesn't have time for football, and all the other gods he spoke with were busy with more important affairs as well.

I am afraid this one is going to be up to humans...

If we can play the same tactics as in EURO2004 we will go through to lengths in this tournament. We need to remember and replicate the style that suits us best and it is the style of EURO2004.

Russia beat Lithuania 4-1......these guys can score for real....they also hit 6 vs Kazakstan, and beat Serbia ... i think Spain is in for a big suprise.

drakos13! I have a similar feeling! It will definitely be a great game that I shall watch.

I need to add that it would be best for Greece if they draw from a viewpoint of group points collected, but a victory for Spain would be welcomed from Greece, to push Russians back.

Either team that loses will be in a difficult position. However, Greece has the best schedule compared to Sweden and Russia in that Greece will play Spain last.

Referee for the match is Massimo Busacca from Switzerland

fantastic work guys, well done!!!

Some Greek newspapers alledge that Otto boosts players morale by encouraging the team to remember the opening game of EURO2004 and that he has a plan to close Sweden down and has well founded high hopes to defend the trophy. There also appears to be reporting on a double trick of Otto on Ibrahimovic. But all the above are claims or the Greek newspapers and therefore cannot be taken seriously.

The concern for me is Busacca. If you read the wikipedia post for him, (Kindly provided by plato-ny) he seems to hate defensive teams and we are sure to pick up a lot of cards if not penalties against us. He is also pro-Spain, therefore the likelihood of a draw in our game vs sweden (which is the best result for spain) increases. I think EPO should act at this instant moment and also our fans should put some pressure to prevent the expected "slaughtering". Perhaps in the face of this our players should definitely be extra careful. It may be to our advantage that we know this butcher...er...referee I mean, pretty well.

The boys said it well today. The same attitude as in EURO 2004 and the same system/game plan. This is what suits us, this is what gives us the edge and this is what will rocket us to success this time around. Abandon the winning recipe to our peril.

Samaras keeps a rein on Greek ambition

Steady rainfall in Seekirchen has not dampened Greece's spirits, but Giorgos Samaras spoke for many when he assessed his side's UEFA EURO 2008™ chances, saying: "I don't dream that big. I am a realist and I know that a repeat triumph is difficult."

Epochal success

Playing at his first major tournament, the 23-year-old striker knows Greece's epochal success at UEFA EURO 2004™ was a massive upset and that a repeat would be an even more stunning turn-up for the books. "Our realistic aim is to get through the group stage, into the quarterfinals," he said ahead of Tuesday's Group D opener against Sweden. "An opening-day victory is very important because it is a huge morale boost and the points are precious. We have analysed our opponents and we intend to be 100 per cent ready."

sorry guys, i disagree with sticking with the same recipe....08 team is not as good as the 04 team at locking down the opponents offense.....my reasons: 4 years older, no "specialists (fyssas/kapsis) and element of surprise is gone.....

i strongly believe otto needs to modify things again, present a new element of surprise, specifically open things up a bit & catch the opponents off guard.......everybody knows what we are going to do, and the opposition has prepared for this ....it will be much more difficult to accomplish especially with an older team without the two wooden defenders that never came up field (for the most part)......

if i'm wrong i will be the first to admit it, but i really hope they present a new wrinkle or two to keep the opponents from executing the game plan of dissecting the greek defense....

i agree with mangas although i dont think fyssas was a specialist...spain anyone? the truth is that we sort of lost the 0 in the back. even your lokal ouzeria seems to have realistic chances of scoring against greece. judging from the qualifying at least. the irony is that we still seem to be a team thats hard to beat. which ios a good thing.

my hope relies on the turkey game if we play like we did there or even better with great katsou performances instead of antzas, i think we could go far and be nice to watch as well. in any case we have to keep errors to a minimum as we did in the euro.

"specialists" in the sense that we had two guys who were comitted to one thing and one thing only: DEFENSE...so essnetially we were on offense with two less players....this comitment to D was a LARGE factor in shuting down the opposition...if u think about how smart and opportunistic that 04 team was, u will realize that "soccer smarts" went a long way in or success....

the 08 team, in order to take advantage of the improved "firepower" that everyone seems to think we have, must involve EVERYONE in the offense which means that there will be more holes in the D....there is no way around this...

either your mids play higher, like aek66 and many other have suggested, to support the forwards, or they will be hung out to dry with no in balls to create opportunities....maybe otto gives antzas and whoever the same responsibilites as fyssas/kapsis, i dont know...

i think the key to this team going far is kyriakos & kastourani.....they need to be active, insistent in theirplay and aggressive in attacking the offensive zone....

i agree the turkey game was a good represeentation of being ready to win when u have to, and it seems these guys think they can flip the switch whenever they need to...wel we will see.....i would not be surprised if they go to the final four, and at the same time i would not be surprised if thye go home after threee games....

that guy did a lot of research

Dellas ou best defender, Stelios the most important mid

I heard Galis will lead us to the gold in basketball in Beijing

actually if we make it to Beijing (we still gotta qualify)

Im actually very sure they will talk about Sofoklis Sxorstsianitis (because hes the black guy") even though hes not on the team anymore

This reminds me of MundoBasket:

Sports Illustrated (a popular no integrity sports magazine) did an article with the "teams to watch" for MundoBasket.....

among them where France, Germany, and Brazil

BRAZIL

I was so mad I remember....Greece was the defending European Champion and a very respected team not even mentioned - they even SMASHED Germany in the final of the Euro....... Brazil? Brazil is rubbish!!!! France? LES PELATES!

of course its because in America basketball is not viewed as a team sport, its a "superstars" game, where only one or two player comprises the majority teams strength. They get so mad when they hear it, but its absolutlely true.

Anyways, our boys under GIANNAKIS  came back and showed those moron writers...leave Greece off the llist honestly......These people are totally neglectful and only think that big name players comprise a team, thats also why they are writing Spain as favourites to win every year.

drakos, the bottom line is few people have the balls to make predictions based on "intangible" qualities....why? becuase theey are subtle, unpredictable, and easily confused with other aspects of a teams qualities.....how can u measure "team spirit", "heart", "unselfishness" "drive" "soccer IQ", and quantifthem in a meaningful, predictive way? not so easy.....

predicting based on superstars, pedigree, past results etc.. is always the safe bet....nobody for the most part sticks their neks out to the point of making "against the grain" predictions because u end up looking like u r not knowledgeable or astute in your observations......

i think its easy to pick the favourite or the safe bet....how hard is it to say "italy or germany" is going to win the euro this year? my grandmother can tell me that.....but as we all know the devil is in the details, and 99% of the time individuals who predict upsets or "see" underdogs as possible winners ae much more astute and sharp in that they pay attention to intangible, unquantifiable things - and like i said in an earlier post, if it was so easy we all would be millionaires betting sports......

well if your not going to be informed and fair, then you also look like a jackass.

As for writing off Greece, it was done in 2004. Were they right? Did they look dumb? YES...

as for basketball example.....Brazil? Germany? these teams have never been good, and Greece has. Its simple lack of knowledge of the sport that they didnt include Greece, I could have told you Greece would easily be in the semifinals, and Im one of the basket NT's BIGGEST critic and hassler. Its 99% lack of any real knowledge, or watching these games. Also fact that they dont even know who will be featuring and being our main players, confirms this.

agreed absulutely......remember that alot of these writers may spend a few minutes going throgh some archives and then have to write an article due to their editorial deadlines....all of us on the site know better obviously, but the biggest irony is that an uninformed chump like that can guess the outcomes corretly and all of us over informed fanatics can get it all worng.....hows that for counter intuitive?

Rehhagel still the king for Charisteas

Having scored the last – and most important – goal of UEFA EURO 2004™, striker Angelos Charisteas is glad to return to the finals with a coach "loved by every Greek".

Welcome return

Charisteas's header represented the full stop to the last UEFA European Championship, winning the final against Portugal, and he is delighted to have another chance to play at this level. "I am very happy to compete again in such a great tournament with Greece," he said. "We are all excited to be at UEFA EURO 2008™, this time as champions. We must now give our best on the pitch and prove that we deserved to become champions."
