I was watching the USA vs. Slovenia game today on ESPN (US channel) and the announcer kept mentioning the tougher competition facing the US up the road.
I'll take that matchup, darkhorse. I think we're better than last year (at least we're better than we were before we won it all), and Slovenia is worse.Right now Nick99, the last 16 matchup would look like this if it we're to end today:
Argentina - Japan
France - Germany
Serbia - Angola
Spain - Nigeria
Greece - Slovenia
Turkey - Puerto Rico
Lithuania - Italy
USA - Brazil
Frankly, I'll take any matchup they give us. The teams which will be the biggest test for Hellas though, are Spain and Argentina, and USA if they eventually meet.
He repeated at least three times "Greece, Spain, and Argentina are the other elite teams in this tournament" and "they are the most discipline teams" as well.
After reading the post about the Sports Illustrated "Top 8" teams in the tourament, I thought it confirmed my opinion about all American sports writers/announcers/people being completely clueless when it comes to the rest of the world (not just sports).
I've heard people in the US say things like "we will blow them all away" or "nobody stands a chance against us". Really? who won Bronze in the last Olympics?
I remember when the first Dream Team played in the Olympics. At McDonalds they had the schedule written on the cups, and the funny thing was that even in the knock-out rounds they had written "USA vs. TBA (To Be Announced)" going all the way up to the final!
It's nice to see a few people open their eyes beyond these borders and acknowledge the potential threat foreign teams pose to the USA.
But, to those who are so 100% confident that nobody stands a chance, I hope the USA don't win the world championships, and when they lose I hope they lose BIG! And I hope Greece is the one who does it. So anytime someone makes a funny comment about "that small country" I'll have a sweet comeback, other than the usual "democracy, philosophy, geometry, etc. contribution" speech which usually never sets in to those listening. Basketball is more simple. ;)

HELLAS!
We have a Kypelaki. :D

The way we've been performing lately, I honestly believe we can make it to the top three.
My dream situaton: Greece vs. USA in the final, with Greece nailing a 3 pointer in the last second to become world champions!
US television highlights showing all of America who the true basketball champs of the world are!

Was Parker and Diaw playing for France in the Acropolis Tournament? I was expecting France to be one of the favorites for this upcoming world championship.
It's funny to see a U.S. team with SO MANY superstars, and to even think they might not win the tournament. The one big thing they lack is teamwork. Too many guys with huge egos trying to show off on the world stage. If they can get past that, they'll have a good chance to win it all.

I'm glad to hear of all the great results lately, but can't watch any of their games. I have not been able to see one olympiakos friendly this summer so far. Where does one without a satelite view their games? Any links for tomorrows game?

The man from the little island of Cyprus ranks higher than the American Roddick. If I am not mistaken he will now be the #10 player in the world, ahead of American Andy Roddick
Sweet. :D

I agree, almost all of his first serves were faults. His second serve was usually not a challenge for Nadal. At key moments in the game I remember seeing Baghdatis hit the ball in the wrong direction towards Nadal instead of away from him when Nadal was clearly at a disadvantage to return the ball. Some easy points and sets were lost due to this mistake. He has the potential, just needs to correct his mistakes and he'll be a top contender.
Does anyone know what his ranking will be after Wimbledon?

Tough loss for Baghdatis. :(
Nadal played better overall. Although Baghdatis did play with heart, it wasn't enough to overcome the # 2 man in the world. However I do see his potential in for future success. I could see Baghdatis in Nadal's shoes within a year or two ranking among the top 5 in the world. If he keeps working hard, he's bound to reach another final.
Final four for the 21 year old is not bad at all.
Good luck and we'll see you soon.

I remember for the 2005 FIBA Eurobasket they showed the games on NBA TV, which is on Digital Cable (and probably satelite as well) in the U.S. They also showed some games from the Under 21 championships. So there should be a decent chance they'll show the World Championships, considering it is bigger than Euro and Under 21.Anyone know if the tournament will be televised in North America?? Probably not here in Canada but what about the U.S.? Will ERT Sat be showing the games of our Ethniki??
Good Luck Boys!
GO HELLAS GO!!!

If you can't find anyone with NBA TV, check out FIBA.com. I know they mentioned all games being streamed through the internet.

Well done Baghdatis. Impressive victory against a #6 and former Wimbeldon champion.
They're finally showing his matches on TV over here. I was very impressed with his first set, total domination. He started to let go a little bit in the second (since he made the crowd laugh with his fake serve) and I was afraid the momentum was starting to turn for the worst. He continued fighting in the third and towards the end of the set I got the feeling he's back in the drivers seat.
After that it was smooooth sailing. B)
Good news is he'll have an extra day of rest over Nadal.
Believe in the dream, Baghdatis! :nw:

Ethnikistis, thanks for welcoming me to Phantis.
Before Baghdatis at the Australian Open, I had never watched an entire tennis match before in my life. I was surprised, I actually found tennis to be very exciting if you have someone to cheer for.
The match against Federer in the Australian Open was a heart breaker. After the first set, I truly believed he could do it. Unfortanately, Federer's experience helped him regroup and come back strong against the young Baghdatis.
But now you can only believe Baghdatis has only gotten better, and Federer really can't get any better than he already is. If the two shall meet in the final, it should be a closer match than their previous encounter.
Believe in Baghdatis! :nw:

Great news!
I've been looking forward to seeing him make another run at a title since the Australian Open.
Do you have any info on the date and time of his next match? Possibly any media links through the internet?

This is another one of the excuses they use when they do not come in first place. "We didn't have our best players". It's not our fault their top players don't care to play.
However, I do think this is the best team since the original dream team because it is filled with young superstars, and some of them still have something to prove. I wouldn't mind throwing Kobe into the mix to create some imbalance in the ego department.
If there is one team that can defeat the US, I think Greece is the one to do it. With Puerto Rico and Slovenia, the final score was not a blow out, and their opponents did manage to score a combined average of almost 100 points. The main strength of the US is offense which is great because the Greek team's main strength is defense. We probably have the best defense in the world. I think the US team will find tough opposition when trying to score and may get frustrated. If we have a decent shooting game, we can beat them.
