Japanese Grand Prix

Only 2 Grand Prix (in Japan and in China) are left to decide which team will win the Constructors' Championship!

from f1racing.net

Japanese Grand Prix fact file

Last year's Japanese Grand Prix will remain firmly imprinted on everyone's memory. On Saturday, the circuit was completely closed due to an approaching typhoon which, in the end, hit land elsewhere. Qualifying was subsequently moved to Sunday morning. 2004 was not the first time Formula One experienced nature's might. Aftershocks were felt during free practice of the 2000 race following an earlier earthquake.

Suzuka is the only F1 track designed as a figure of eight. The track offers a wide range of corners, from the tight Spoon curve to the ultra fast 130R. The circuit is located in the middle of Suzuka Land, a leisure park created for the families of Honda employees.

This year's event will be the 19th Japanese Grand Prix to be held at Suzuka. Before Formula One's debut in Suzuka in 1987, two Japanese Grands Prix were hosted on the race track at the foot of Mount Fuji (1976 and 1977). In 1994 and 1995 the Pacific GP was hosted by Japan's Aida circuit.

The city of Suzuka lies on the south east coast of the main Japanese island of

Honshu and has a population of almost 200,000.

Race Review from F1 Racing Net

Kimi Raikkonen stormed to victory in a thrilling Japanese Grand Prix after starting from 17th on the grid. The Finn blasted past Giancarlo Fisichella around the outside of turn one, on the last lap of the race to snatch victory. Fernando Alonso claimed the final podium position in an action-packed race.

It was an exciting start. As the cars lined up on the grid all eyes were on Jenson Button whose BAR Honda was smoking - but there was no terminal problem. Ralf kept the lead into the first corner ahead of Fisichella while Button fell to third. David Coulthard made a lightning start to climb to fourth while Takuma Sato and Rubens Barrichello ran wide and had an off-track moment at the first corner.

At the back Alonso had already climbed up to tenth and the McLarens were making progress too until disaster struck for Montoya who was pushed wide by Jacques Villeneuve, ran onto the grass and into the tyre barriers at the final corner. With wheels ripped from the left side of his McLaren the safety car was deployed until lap eight.

As the safety car came in, Ralf Schumacher got away beautifully with Fisichella second, Button third, Coulthard fourth and Webber fifth. Michael Schumacher passed Klien for sixth while Alonso was up to eighth. Alonso then lined up Klien and after cutting the chicane let the Austrian back past but overtook him into turn one. A lap later the champion let Klien back past, apparently after Renault received instruction from the FIA to do so and then on lap 12 overtook the Red Bull again for sixth.

Ralf Schumacher pitted from the lead on lap 13 - very early especially considering there were several fuel-saving laps under the safety car. The German rejoined in ninth place, releasing Fisichella into the lead.

After following Michael Schumacher around for several laps, Fernando Alonso forced his way around the outside of the high-speed 130R corner to take fifth place but pitted on the next lap.

Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen both pitted on lap 26 managing to emerge in fifth and sixth, ahead of Coulthard and Alonso. Fisichella resumed the lead after the second round of pit stops. It took Raikkonen just two laps to find a way past Schumacher and then the Finn pulled away easily.

Alonso eventually found his way past Schumacher but dropped back again when he made his second stop. Kimi Raikkonen went very late into the race and in the final stages found himself in second place and closing on race leader Giancarlo Fisichella. As Raikkonen went about closing in, Fernando Alonso set about blasting past Mark Webber for third place - the Spaniard even taking to the grass down the pit straight but stealing the final podium slot.

Raikkonen caught right up with Fisichella and when the chips were down the Finn blasted around the outside of turn one to snatch victory on the final lap of a thrilling Grand Prix. A jubilant Raikkonen claimed his ninth career win and his seventh of the season. Renault takes the lead in the constructors championship by two points over McLaren, but Raikkonen's victory minimised the damage.

Mark Webber drove a strong race to finish fourth while Jenson Button faded during the race to finish fifth. David Coulthard claimed another three points for Red Bull Racing ahead of the two Schumacher brothers - Michael in seventh and Ralf eighth.

Formula One now heads to China next weekend with the constructors' championship still wide open.

nope nothing, seriously, for the first time all season the performances of Kimi and fernando were amazing, even when the fia messed up and made alonso pass pizzonia (i think) 3 times he still kept calm and did it to the best of his ability, they were amazing, maybe, just maybe, just just maybe, alonso isnt as boring as i first thought
