ZeeKoei
Brugge through Also winning comfortably were Club Brugge KV. Two Boško Balaban goals had given them a 2-0 home win against PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv last week, and the Croatian claimed another double in Bulgaria as his side's 4-0 victory gave them a 6-0 overall triumph. Balaban's first came on 14 minutes as he finished powerfully, and on 44 minutes he headed his second after Gert Verheyen's cross from the right. Saeternes scores Lokomotiv had a goal disallowed for a foul midway through the second half, but 16 minutes from the end substitute Bengt Saeternes increased Brugge's lead. The home side had Alexander Tunchev sent off for a professional foul on Saeternes ten minutes later and Nastja Ceh converted the resulting free-kick. uefa.com
ZeeKoei
Benfica prepare for Anderlecht test Friday, 30 July 2004 The draw for the third qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League has thrown up a mouthwatering tie between two of European football's great names - SL Benfica and RSC Anderlecht. Excellent pedigree Both clubs have an excellent European pedigree. Benfica were champions of Europe in 1961 and 1962, while Anderlecht won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978 and the UEFA Cup in 1983. In that latter final their opponents were Benfica, with the Belgian side, featuring current Anderlecht assistant coach Frankie Vercauteren winning 2-1 on aggregate. uefa.com
ZeeKoei
Shaktar 4 - Bruges 1 FC Shakhtar Donetsk have high hopes of ending a two-year absence from the UEFA Champions League group stage after claiming a three-goal lead in their third qualifying round tie against Club Brugge KV. Late goals Brugge beat BV Borussia Dortmund at this stage last season, but were troubled throughout in rainy conditions in Ukraine. Despite this, they had looked well-poised after Boško Balaban equalised Julius Aghahowa's early goal, but Mircea Lucescu's side scored three times in the last 20 minutes to take control of the tie ahead of the return in Belgium on 25 August. Aghahowa scores The hosts went close on nine minutes, Razvan Rat picking up the ball in midfield and breaking to cross but Andriy Vorobey's header was cleared off the line. Within seven minutes though, Flavius Stoican centred the ball, Ciprian Marica flicked on and Aghahowa dived in to head Shakhtar ahead. Butina saves The home side kept up the pressure for the rest of the half, and Tomislav Butina had to dive at full stretch to deny Zvonimir Vukic when he shot from distance in the 38th minute. Within seconds, the goalkeeper was in action again, this time saving from Aghahowa with another powerful effort. Butina then kept Cosmin Barcauan at bay with his leg, and Vukic shot wide moments before the break, with Brugge relieved to be only 1-0 down. Brugge equalise However, Brugge came out for the second half transformed. First Viktor beat two home defender on the right wing and shot against the post. Then Gert Verheyen intercepted a Shakhtar pass and fed Balaban, who burst into the area and struck past Jan Laštuvka to level the scores. Marica strikes The next 20 minutes were a tight affair, but just as it seemed Brugge were heading for a useful away result, Shakhtar were back in front. Vukic's pass found Marica in the penalty box, as he stole the ball from a visiting defender who seemed to have intercepted, and the teenager applied a confident finish. Lead stretched Eight minutes later Matuzalem's incisive pass allowed Vorobey to break into the Brugge box from the left, and after beating two defenders his shot found the corner of Butina's goal. Shakhtar continued to press and Vorobey, recently recalled to the Ukraine squad after a two-year absences, broke down the right and crossed to substitute Brandão, who duly connected to further delight the home fans. uefa.com
ZeeKoei
Trapattoni savours winning start Tuesday, 10 August 2004 SL Benfica will travel to Brussels with a narrow lead over RSC Anderlecht after an early goal from Zlatko Zahovic brought Giovanni Trapattoni victory in his first match as coach. Long wait This was the first competitive match in the Estadio da Luz since the UEFA EURO 2004™ final and there were 60,000 fans inside urging their side on as Benfica looked to claim a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time since 1998/99. Early chances There were early chances for both sides. First Christian Wilhelmsson latched on to a sloppy back-pass from Miguel but he failed to find a team-mate with his ball across the penalty area. In response, Petit dribbled through the visitors' defence and from inside the area, shot just wide of Daniel Zitka's left-hand post. Missed opportunity Back to the other end and in the 12th minute, a menacing counterattack from Anderlecht saw Aruna Dindane escape the offside trap. Breaking into the box from the right, however, he was unable to pick out Goran Lovre, who was waiting in front of goal for the final pass. Zahovic scores That chance gone begging, Anderlecht then conceded the game's only goal 60 seconds later. Simão Sabrosa attacked down the left flank and fed Zahovic on the edge of the area. The Slovenian playmaker controlled the ball with his right foot, then drove a powerful shot with his left straight into the top left-hand corner. Mpenza shoots wide The tempo then slowed although Benfica were in control, and Tomo Šokota, João Pereira and Paulo Almeida all tried their luck from long range. After the restart, however, the Belgian champions came back at them. After 58 minutes, Mbo Mpenza was put clean through by Wilhelmsson but shot wide with just Yannick to beat. Zitka save As the clock ticked down, Benfica regained control and Zitka did well to deny Simão when the left winger crashed a volley goalwards from Petit's free-kick. In the final moments, Anderlecht gave the home supporters a final scare but Dindane again failed to pick out a team-mate after surging down the right. The second leg of this third qualifying round tie is to come in a fortnight's time but the Trapattoni era is now up and running. uefa.com
